Hi, I have the MacBook Pro m4 max base model on 14'' . I did Edin one video till now and it was a 4k 60fps 1 hour travel video. The m4 base model had no problem on ANY TASK. Lots of people told me to ho with 16" because of battery and performance but I don't see that a problem on 14".
you also made suggestions based on others' reviews without you actually using the different models? I can see how some people get value on that, but I would not give much weight to someone making suggestions without actually using the laptops themselves. That might be just me.
Can you make a video about why exported video colors don't look like they do in the program monitor. Even using the QT LUT. I've tried so many thing but nothing works. I contacted Adobe and they said to use VLC to play videos which does adjust the colors but still not what it looks like in the preview monitor. I opened 4 windows on the same monitor to see the difference in color and they were all different. I opened one on the default mac player, one on VLC player, one on the premiere preview monitor, and finally on youtube and they all looked different. So frustrating.
Don't use a LUT to change colours. Both QuickTime and vlc can alter the colours of an exported video file. Try using MPV player. What you see on TH-cam should be the correct result
glad this came out since I'm planning to get one of these m4s and your videos are always a great resource for comparisons. One thing you didn't mention that I've seen elsewhere is why you should get a 16" m4 max -- the extra heat dissipation is pretty crucial when getting to the loads you commonly throw at the m4 max, so from a thermal perspective you kind of have to go 16" for m4 max
You do, maybe I missed it but what I meant was I don’t think you mentioned *why* the m4 max chip should go hand in hand with the 16” (i.e. don’t get a 14” with m4 max) due to the the worse thermal regulation performance of the 14” which inhibits the performance if you’re really driving the m4 max hard. If you mentioned that my mistake
I’m considering getting a Mac Mini for 4K video editing. I currently use an Asus 2K monitor and a Full HD monitor. Will this setup be sufficient for editing 4K 60fps footage at full quality? My workflow involves editing wedding videos with 3 to 4 cameras and using multicam features in Premiere Pro, especially for scenes like the dancing sequences. Will the Mac Mini handle this efficiently? (M4 Pro 12 cpu core 16 core GPU 24 GB ram )
Good points Matt..thank you..Yup still have a MacBook Pro 16 M3 Max..and don't really see the need to upgrade to an M4..I'll just wait for the redesign and OLED screen on the M5 or M6?..lol

Thanks for the video Matt, super helpful! I own a M1 MacBook Pro and looking at upgrading to M4 for budget video editing. Do you think the M4 Mac Mini can handle medium-heavy video editing workload for weddings/events or should I bite the bullet and go with MacBook Pro? Thanks!
I don’t have a budget for going to M4 Pro models. Can I know the base model(M4 16GB RAM ) that can be used without lagging in DaVinci Resolve 4K 4.2.2. 10-bit footage from Sony A7 iv
I'm curious about the tests you're using to support the claim that the M4 Pro outperforms the M1 Max, M2 Max, or M3 Max. It seems a bit optimistic to me. Personally, I still believe the M1 Max holds an advantage in GPU workloads compared to the M4 Pro
Matt, I'm torn between the M3 Max and the M4 Pro with 48GB memory, both priced at $2,800. What’s your take? I mainly edit footage from the Sony FX6 and FX3 and more, but I also work on 1-2 hour multicam timelines. Which would be the better choice for my workflow?
I was going to get the 12 core pro with 1tb ram but B&H had a sale that made it a $100 difference, so I upgraded. They had thf 512gb ssd as an option but Id like to have plenty of space even if i store large projects on an external ssd

I have never had the opportunity to have a good computer. Now I want to have a computer capable of editing films. Projects of up to two hours in length. I want to be able to enter the film world of my country, which is small but demanding. What is your recommendation for someone with these aspirations?
I mean depends how soon you will make it. If editing films in 6k 8k and all that is gonna happen for you in 4-5 years then buy a m4 pro instead of max right now. If you are just editing 20-30 minut shorts in 2k - 4k, m4 pro will do for now. Smaller footage, I think even a regular m4 will do with 24gigs of ram. And i think at the base level a mac mini with an external screen will be cheaper for you. Either way I think you should buy for your budget and conditions right now because whatver machine yiu buy, it will easily be ok for 3-6 yeara
Great video Matt. I’m stuck between a binned 14” M4 pro with a 48 gb ram upgrade and a used 16” M3 Max 16/40 with 48 gb ram for almost the same price.. Not sure if the editing performance on the m3 max justifies buying an older gen macbook and also not sure if the new m4 display is a huge difference compared to the omder m3 macbooks.
Get the M3 Max. I was stuck in the same spot, until I found a 14" 14-30c M3 Max, with 36GB/1TB for 150€ more than the M4 Pro 24GB/1TB 14" (2999€) That was a no brainier. Get the M3 Max, it's better than the M4 Pro even if you may not need the extra performance right now. As a rule of thumb I would always go with a previous gen top tier chip rather than a newer "mid" tier one.
is it even possible to edit longer, like an hour or more projects on a base M4 Pro MacBook Pro, like could you get acceptable performance if you work with proxies and lower the timeline resolution? Would be interesting to see a best practices vid for under-specc'd machines at some point.
I love your reviews! They are the most pragmatic and informative for me. I’m a 79-year-old videographer who shoots docs and some events. I’m not sure how much longer I will be working so how much money I spend on equipment is important. I have a Sony 7siii, an FX 3 and a Sony a7iii. My laptop is a 15” MacBook Pro 2012. I’m currently using a Mac Studio 32 RAM and 2TB SSD for storage. I’m also a photographer so I’m interested in editing my photographs in Lightroom on the go. Apple business folks are trying to convince me to spend $4,000 on their plan, but I think (for what I do which is minimal editing in Premiere) that the M4Pro with 24 RAM and 1 TB SSD will work for me. Any advice?
If you're wanting to stay on budget, I'd now look at refubished M2 Pro/M3 Pro 14" laptops. I have a 14" M3 Pro with 38gb of ram and 1tb ssd. It chews through just about everything until I am doing five layers of multicam 4K video, then I usually build proxies. I would say if you need more ram for the price, I'd go with an M2 Pro with more ram than an M3 Pro with less ram. In hindsight I wish I had more ram for those 10% of my edits but for my 90% single source 4K to 1080p delivery for my day job? Works fantastic
Thanks! Like Steven said, those M2 and M3 refurbished would be a fantastic option for the price. If you want the latest and greatest though, get the M4 Pro for sure.
What would you choose between M2 Pro 16gb/512gb (1300€ used) and m4 Pro 24gb/512gb (2100€ new)? 4k and 6k video editing and color grading in Resolve and Premiere. I would choose the M2 Pro because i am on a budget, but maybe the increase is worth it. But from what ive seen the performance increase isnt worth the price difference in this case.

I have an NZXT PC with an i9 10900k, 3090, and 64GB ram. Gonna be switching to Mac. Tired of windows. I have an old 2018 MBP that isn’t usable for video editing. But I can’t see myself going with anything less than the M4 Max 16 CPU/40 GPU with 64 GB of ram. Is that overkill when compared to my PC specs? To be clear, that 3090 is a monster at rendering 4k videos. I use DaVinci, sometimes Dehancer as well.
For a little bit of context, I have a similar-ish 5900X/32GB/2080 desktop and got only a 16gb M1 Pro 14" a few years ago as a "mobile/backup" option but it ended up being my primary machine because it was actually faster in some tasks, at worst it was on par with it. I only wish I knew it would be more than a secondary as I would have gotten more RAM. Even the M4 Pro would definitely do you well IMO. I think the Max is overkill unless there's a lot of RAW video or heavy effects. My M1 handles Dehancer pretty well unless I have some of the more intense FX turned on, sure the M4 Pro would do a very good job with it.
I have a brother who works at the Apple store, and he says that he can get me a 25% discount on a laptop of my choice. Which option would be the best for me knowing that I can get 25% off? I don't shoot in prores but h265 and edit in premiere pro. M4 max has 2 decoder for pro res. Does that also help in h265 editing experience?
Yes the Max has 2 encoders and 2 decoders for h264/h265 and ProRes so it will be faster.
@@whoismatt On apple site it states:
Video decode engine
Two video encode engines
Two ProRes encode and decode engines
I don't think there are 2 decoders for h264/h265. Only 2 encode engines.
I shoot 422 10bit 4k in 2021 and use the macbook m1.
I still shoot 422 10bit 4k in 2024, and the macbook m1 still goes thru it like butter...
There's no reason to get the M4
What if someone doesn't have have a mac previously. Go for the m4 16gb or the m4 pro 24?
Want budget? Buy second hand M1 pro/max. Or M3 pro.
They are still sooo good.
I have a brother who works at the Apple store, and he says that he can get me a 25% discount on a laptop of my choice. Which option would be the best for me knowing that I can get 25% off?
For context, I do content creation for my TH-cam channel, where the most complex stuff I do is green screening and color grading.
M4 base model will probably cut it
Hey bro recently i update windows 23h3 to 24h3 after update i yesterday open premiere pro try to import data but whole pc freeze then black screen & software' crash u hve any solution of this please
Reinstall Premiere Pro?
✌....
I'll NEVER EVER buy any Laptop witha SCREEN less than 17.3. I'd jump at a 21" 10 20 12 Lb Behemoth Because Screen Realistate is most Important to me. Besides if you can't lift 12 Lbs get a GYM membership and Bulk up booby.
Why stop at 21 inches?
Useful but this was basically you making claims based on others reviews(?) I think it would be way more useful if you show the different options in your hands, using your projects. Otherwise, you sounded like apple marketing material. maybe a bit harsh. apologies if so.
Just build your own laptop or desktop
Are many people building laptops these days?
@ not really, it’s just cheaper. I spend $700 on eBay for parts and got the specs of a $2000 laptop. Nothing wrong with paying for convenience and the apple brand though
Love these video! Just the video I was looking for! I was on the edge on deciding which macbook pro to get and now I have a better understanding on which to get! Thanks Matt! 🫰👏👏
I will tell my kids this is Post Malone.
