Some Bistro Math. Mac Mini M4 base model 16G/256GB is 600. Mac mini M4 with SSD and RAM upgrade 32G/512GB is 1200.00. 1200 is naturally 600 but twice, so you can just get two base models and get a free CPU etc etc

What I like the most about this channel is that it analyzes laptops and computers from the point of view *of people that write code*. I couldn't care less about how fast a machine edits videos. TH-cam is full of that.

Good explanation. However, binning isn’t always about having a bad die. It’s about the peak efficiency of that die under certain power/load. The peak performance should be sustained under the load for that specific die to remain a performance core. If that doesn’t happen, it can still be used for most purpose, just not the power hungry sustained usage at peak efficiency. That is a binned die now.

Here is a TH-camr who recommends the highest specs and most expensive setup. I don't think this is a good recommendation for most people, not even for most programmers. The best sweet spot this year is, in my opinion, the M4 Pro 14/20 cores, 48G.
I tip my hat to you sir. Hands down the best eval of the M4 Macbook Pro options and tradeoffs of the new line up. NO ONE is doing videos with this depth. Everyone else goes for the 'normie that thinks they are a techie'. But it's so nice to have a channel that digs in deep. If you are going to spend $4k on a laptop these are ABSOLUTELY the things you will be wanting to know (or learn about).
For machine learning, memory latency is sometimes more important than pure bandwidth, but never mentioned by apple, Alex... want to test these numbers too between the models, and add it to your excel?
One thing I love about my M1 pro MBP is the complete absence of fan noise under even quite challenging loads. Now that the core count is up and the clock speed is way up, I'm waiting to see what the thermals are like for this years lineup before picking Pro/Max as it always used to be Apple's tendency to undercool its laptops leading to the 747 jet engine fans from the intel days.
Finally, someone shouting what I have been commenting. The lack of 64GB M4 Pro configuration is terrible. It’s perfect for me but I either need a desktop (which isn’t me) or a higher Max chip (a complete overkill) Just to note, tables do not make understanding dimensions easier, bar charts do. I am familiar with chip manufacturing. Sometimes they make the same chip and just delete parts of it and sell it as a down bin. It depends on demand. As an aside, DRAMs for decades have had extra rows of memory so that if a row was bad they could delete it and not lose the whole chip.
Now it's DRAM + the chip itself because Apple Silicon uses on-package RAM. It's funny that the advantages of on-package RAM only make sense on the Pro and Ultra models with higher memory bandwidth. Apple now has a bunch of M2/M3 + 8 GB RAM packages lying around because all MacBook models being sold now have a 16 GB RAM base config.

i would say for video editing, Max is the way to go. Also, if using Adobe, the more ram the better. My 64GB M2 Max struggles with Premiere Pro. Davinci is a bit better

Hi. I am a researcher (medical physics) . I still rock my intel macbook pro 8 gb ram, late 2019. This thing just refuses to die. Need more computational power? I use high performance clusters. This is a privilege at the type of work that I do, however, I dont really feel the need to update.

It's too bad the M4 Pro doesn't have any 32GB or 36GB RAM options. 24GB might be on the lower side, now that even Minis and Airs get 16GB per default. 48GB seems excessive for my needs and gets quite pricey. Also not sure if I want to go for the lower end 12/16 M4 Pro or the 14/20. Currently, I only use AI models through APIs, but in the years to come it would probably be a good idea to have 48GB to be safe, right? Thanks for the Google Sheet, it help me break things down to the 4 configs I consider.
@@gopietz Well, in fact you get 48GB for the price of 36GB last week (on the M3 Pro). So I would say, just go for it. Running AI stuff locally uses more RAM, and who knows how that market will evolve in the next 2 to 3 years. So better safe than sorry I would say...
All depends on your needs. Personally the most intense workload I do is having a virtual machine running, with word and a browser or two with a few tabs open simultaneously (and some other background apps). So far I've been managing well with 16GB ram on a ryzen 5 3600. My 8GB laptop is out of the question. With my workload 24GB seems like a major step up. So again, it all depends.

I’m an aerospace engineer, knowing some people in my field use Mac but don’t know why since Linux is basically required for most real-time machine applications. Worked on autonomous driving before, for machine learning programs, yeah a Mac is enough, but still, a laptop with such a powerful chip just seems like a complete overkill considering how much it costs and what most people use it for.

i have an Intel MBP mid 2015 w/ 16gb of ram and 512gb of space. I bought it 9 years ago and still works fine, i'm using it almost everyday for front end web development and casual photoshop / illustrator and premiere 1080p editing. Last year i thought seriously about upgrading to a M3 Pro but i had some doubts... Finally i wiill be jumping on a MBP M4 Pro w/48gb of ram, this time i have zero doubts.
Part about binning make sense, but about "being targeted as high-end M4 Pro" - doesn't. In terms of silicon manufacturing you can plan to be able to fuse out some parts of the chip - CPU cores, GPU cores, cache, etc. - actually you can design it to whatever you want. But M4 Pro and M4 Max are for sure different dies, so different design. And you don't have that many bad dies in a first place to call binned M4 Max a M4 Pro economically feasible. They wanted to differentiate lower end M4 Max from higher End and by some measurement decided that removing 2 cores and probably part of the memory controller is a must. That can be technical decision (some of those cores won't be able to work at all or be stable at desired frequency with given voltage) but it was not unheard of to make a political decision and just disable parts of a perfectly good chip to justify a cheaper option. (e.x. in 2000s, some Radeon 9500 Pro were unlockable to become Radeon 9700 or later on some Athlon X3 were unlockable to X4)

I'm planning on getting a M4 Max with 128Gigs as well. It's A LOT of money especially in Europe with added VAT of 20%, my only worry is that Apple warranty service in Europe is infamous for borderline scamming customers by claiming fake water damage, or refusing warranty based on cosmetic scuffs so if I get a lemon it would be devastating.

I’m looking at the most maxed-out MacBook Pro with the M4 Max chip, 8TB SSD, and 128GB RAM, but I can’t decide between the 14-inch and 16-inch models. Is it true that the 14-inch version has limitations when using High Performance Mode in the settings? I’ve heard that the smaller battery, smaller fans, and potential heat issues may impact performance, while the 16-inch doesn’t face these issues. Could you consider making a video about this topic? I'm bummed about the RAM tiering. My wife needs 64GB RAM but she's forced to get the Max chip, driving up the cost by a lot. 16GB RAM is fine for Devs like me but videographers are really being skinned alive here.
It really depends on what you develop. At work I deal with multiple Java micro services, which aren't all that micro... So I do need 32+ GB of RAM. I do have a M1 Pro MacBook Pro with 32Gb RAM for my private stuff. I am also not intending to upgrade it at the moment. But yeah, I guess as a video editor you might need more RAM.

To those who are still studying and not at professional level in data science & ML, and considering highly demand work will be running on the cloud, what would be a nice configuration to have? I`m tempted between PRO 48RAM @2899 and MAX 64RAM @ 3899. Really wondering around the USD 1,000 GAP and how much benefit I'll be getting from that...
Perhaps take into consideration *when* you think you will purchase again after this one( ie in a few years). If you are going to purchase again in just a few years ( some people do) and you don’t need the extra ram now, perhaps save the money for the future purchase? Other people may disagree- you could potentially need more power sooner than you think. Everyone always says get more than what you think you need… but I really think it depends on you and what you really are doing now, for the next few years & when you may buy again. Also I’m far from an expert so take that with a grain of salt ( seriously a small grain of salt 😅). I finished study & no longer work too. I did need my MacBook Pro to do more than I thought I would need but it was no where near the specs you have - but It handled the work fine ( molecular genetics and biotechnology… which did use several more intense programs for protein structure analysis and long with many other statistical tools … and more)
The most demanding tasks I perform are some photo edits, using Photoshop and Lightroom, coding using Pycharm and running Machine Learning codes to train new ML models. I was looking to buy a Macbook. Which one should I reasonably go for?
@@debjyotiarr for ML models I guess it is better to hire cloud services, then big data models can be trained effectively. for other work other than ML even a macbook air will do a good job.
As a M2 Max owner with 32gigs of ram, I would advise the entry model because MacOS just can’t keep up with the extra speed from the expensive upgrades. You’ll have a sluggish machine no matter what 😢
I’m upgrading from a 2019 i5 intel 16/512GB 16” MacBook Pro. Gonna miss the touch bar because it’s very useful for me. However I won’t be getting a 16” MBP, only a 14” with the M4. Looking forward to the new MacBook.

M1 Max 10CPU/32GPU/32RAM is still the best performer! Better than any M4 Pro. Max is in a league of its own.

Much appreciate your making these videos. I have the M1 Max, 14 inch. Your videos have aided in purchasing decisions in the past. Now, I have to decide if I get the M4 max, 16 inch, or 14 inch.

Making so many tables and stuffs, i mean this is how a true buying guide video should be, talking about every limitations we will be getting while buying from the apple's ladder website where people tend to overspec up their devices more than they will ever use
It's too bad the M4 Pro doesn't have any 32GB or 36GB RAM options. 24GB might be on the lower side, now that even Minis and Airs get 16GB per default. 48GB seems excessive for my needs and gets quite pricey. Also not sure if I want to go for the lower end 12/16 M4 Pro or the 14/20. Currently, I only use AI models through APIs, but in the years to come it would probably be a good idea to have 48GB to be safe, right?

@@gopietz Well, in fact you get 48GB for the price of 36GB last week (on the M3 Pro). So I would say, just go for it. Running AI stuff locally uses more RAM, and who knows how that market will evolve in the next 2 to 3 years. So better safe than sorry I would say...
All depends on your needs. Personally the most intense workload I do is having a virtual machine running, with word and a browser or two with a few tabs open simultaneously (and some other background apps).
So far I've been managing well with 16GB ram on a ryzen 5 3600. My 8GB laptop is out of the question. With my workload 24GB seems like a major step up. So again, it all depends.

I’m an aerospace engineer, knowing some people in my field use Mac but don’t know why since Linux is basically required for most real-time machine applications. Worked on autonomous driving before, for machine learning programs, yeah a Mac is enough, but still, a laptop with such a powerful chip just seems like a complete overkill considering how much it costs and what most people use it for.

This is my first time checking out this channel. Especially, since the algorithm placed your video in my list of suggestive vid's to watch. It just so happens I am researching into buying a new MacBook Pro now and next summer the new 2025 Mac Pro models. One preferably maxed out in terms of power specifications [cpu, ram, and 8TB SSD]. I am in music production and Mac's are where its at! Always have been except for the past Mac Pro trashcans. 🤣😂. Great channel and I did subscribe!
Yep, that's sneaky Apple... I wanted at least 64GB of Memory, I wanted the M4 Pro model, now I am going to have to get the top spec M4 Max if I want the configuration I want.
i have an Intel MBP mid 2015 w/ 16gb of ram and 512gb of space. I bought it 9 years ago and still works fine, i'm using it almost everyday for front end web development and casual photoshop / illustrator and premiere 1080p editing. Last year i thought seriously about upgrading to a M3 Pro but i had some doubts... Finally i wiill be jumping on a MBP M4 Pro w/48gb of ram, this time i have zero doubts.
Part about binning make sense, but about "being targeted as high-end M4 Pro" - doesn't.
In terms of silicon manufacturing you can plan to be able to fuse out some parts of the chip - CPU cores, GPU cores, cache, etc. - actually you can design it to whatever you want.
But M4 Pro and M4 Max are for sure different dies, so different design. And you don't have that many bad dies in a first place to call binned M4 Max a M4 Pro economically feasible. They wanted to differentiate lower end M4 Max from higher End and by some measurement decided that removing 2 cores and probably part of the memory controller is a must. That can be technical decision (some of those cores won't be able to work at all or be stable at desired frequency with given voltage) but it was not unheard of to make a political decision and just disable parts of a perfectly good chip to justify a cheaper option. (e.x. in 2000s, some Radeon 9500 Pro were unlockable to become Radeon 9700 or later on some Athlon X3 were unlockable to X4)

I’m a software dev diving into ML and considering the switch to Mac. After some research, I found out about Apple’s MPS and the support coming from PyTorch and TensorFlow, but I’m still unsure about leaving CUDA-especially with framework compatibility, tool access, and deployment quirks.

I'm planning on getting a M4 Max with 128Gigs as well. It's A LOT of money especially in Europe with added VAT of 20%, my only worry is that Apple warranty service in Europe is infamous for borderline scamming customers by claiming fake water damage, or refusing warranty based on cosmetic scuffs so if I get a lemon it would be devastating.

I’m looking at the most maxed-out MacBook Pro with the M4 Max chip, 8TB SSD, and 128GB RAM, but I can’t decide between the 14-inch and 16-inch models.
Is it true that the 14-inch version has limitations when using High Performance Mode in the settings? I’ve heard that the smaller battery, smaller fans, and potential heat issues may impact performance, while the 16-inch doesn’t face these issues.

I'm bummed about the RAM tiering. My wife needs 64GB RAM but she's forced to get the Max chip, driving up the cost by a lot. 16GB RAM is fine for Devs like me but videographers are really being skinned alive here.
If you're a Dev linux is the best.
It really depends on what you develop. At work I deal with multiple Java micro services, which aren't all that micro... So I do need 32+ GB of RAM. I do have a M1 Pro MacBook Pro with 32Gb RAM for my private stuff. I am also not intending to upgrade it at the moment.
But yeah, I guess as a video editor you might need more RAM.
@@igordasunddas3377 Off topic here in a dev channel but my wife uses Adobe After Effects which is RAM intensive. I suppose Apple is doing her a favour by forcing up the ladder to Max cos that has 40GPU cores which will benefit her.

To those who are still studying and not at professional level in data science & ML, and considering highly demand work will be running on the cloud, what would be a nice configuration to have? I`m tempted between PRO 48RAM @2899 and MAX 64RAM @ 3899. Really wondering around the USD 1,000 GAP and how much benefit I'll be getting from that...
Perhaps take into consideration *when* you think you will purchase again after this one( ie in a few years). If you are going to purchase again in just a few years ( some people do) and you don’t need the extra ram now, perhaps save the money for the future purchase? Other people may disagree- you could potentially need more power sooner than you think. Everyone always says get more than what you think you need… but I really think it depends on you and what you really are doing now, for the next few years & when you may buy again. Also I’m far from an expert so take that with a grain of salt ( seriously a small grain of salt 😅). I finished study & no longer work too. I did need my MacBook Pro to do more than I thought I would need but it was no where near the specs you have - but It handled the work fine ( molecular genetics and biotechnology… which did use several more intense programs for protein structure analysis and long with many other statistical tools … and more)
The most demanding tasks I perform are some photo edits, using Photoshop and Lightroom, coding using Pycharm and running Machine Learning codes to train new ML models. I was looking to buy a Macbook. Which one should I reasonably go for?
get a windows pc, add in nvidia gpu, ram and ssd at a much cheaper price.

As a M2 Max owner with 32gigs of ram, I would advise the entry model because MacOS just can’t keep up with the extra speed from the expensive upgrades. You’ll have a sluggish machine no matter what 😢

I’m upgrading from a 2019 i5 intel 16/512GB 16” MacBook Pro. Gonna miss the touch bar because it’s very useful for me. However I won’t be getting a 16” MBP, only a 14” with the M4. Looking forward to the new MacBook.
