What a great podcast. I've listened to 4-5 episodes now since subscribing to it a couple of days ago and I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate you both on the thoroughly professional job you're doing. It is a pleasure to listen to genuinely intelligent and eloquent presenters. Great stuff.
Just what I needed ☺️ now I can listen to my favourite podcast while I get my jobs done. Thank you for all the information you have given. It's made running my 6 aquariums so much better x
See, this is why we're friends! I love both tank ideas. If money was no object, I'd do a combo of what you're both doing. I'd have it at least two stories. One to view from above and one to be viewed from below. I would make it 20ftx10ftxx10ft, which would make it approximately 15,000 gallons. It would be a South American species setup. The sump would be out of sight out of mind in the basement, most likely, but the first person I'm calling is Greg Wittstock and Ed Beaulieu from Aquascape to design the best possible filtration. I would also bring in Jeremy from AquariumDomain since he has built a few massive tanks himself, and his filtration is outstanding. Driftwood and universal rock would be the way to go as far as scaping. I'll try plants native to South America, but I'm fine with just keeping plants in the sump of the fish Im keeping won't allow for plants. As far as lighting, I'd build a roof with multiple, large, retractable sky light. Even with money not being an obstacle, there's no way I'm paying for lights.
Mine would be a giant Congo River biotope with the star of the show being the Mbu Puffer. Would love a size similar to Jason's idea running the span of an entire wall with the current similar to a river running from one end to the other. Would be an amazing display if ever possible.
New house, workshop, plumbing and anything else I can think of then. I have tried this before and it can still run to a halt if not prepared for the clash it sometimes causes. Or else my area needs a breeder that has space for 300 tanks and I would love to rise to that occasion otherwise I have already had my dream and I still do! Everything beyond what I have is just extra. So I’m not greedy! Hope you all have a great holiday season and stay happy and healthy my friends!
Here in Greece I would build a recuse pond for large predators. It would be heated in the winter. But it would be somewhere, where the red tail cats, etc that you see in the fish shop 2in long and really cute and a year later they can’t turn round….
If you're trying to save money with all of this, you get a heat exchanger and your wastewater before it goes out to a pond. It heats up your cold water that will be going through your tank and then you save some extra money on power
I live in a colder climate in New Jersey. I want a raised outdoor African cichlid pond with a glass viewing window that is incorporated into a deck. I want a heater that’s so powerful I can leave the fish out there all year and the water never gets cold
Sorry John, but I'm with Jason on this. If I had the money to be able to afford tanks like you're talking about, then I wouldn't have to work. The pleasure for me, besides setting it up, would be to work with it and maintain it myself. I enjoy working with all my tanks (six, going on seven now) and that's what makes me happy. And John - I'm 71 - so stop saying that 50 is too old!
I actually thought about this. If I had an unlimited budget. I would build a fish house with a dedicated quarantine and hospital ward. I would also have a filter house with a commercial RODI system. I would have a company come out and maintain it. I also would contribute to maintaining it but it wouldn't be all me. Now for the fun part. I would have two 16 x 3 x 4-foot tanks on each side of the room on one wall I would have a massive freshwater tank with South American Cichlids, Bichers and at least a dozen clown loaches. The other wall would be a mixed reef with as many different tangs, wrasses, gobies, file fish, shrimp, crabs, and snails. All of the fish would have a job, but I find saltwater utility fish to be amazing. there would be couches and tables so you can enjoy all the tanks in the fish house. There would be double doors to get everything in. So, on the double Door side you come in and see the 16 footers on the walls and the seating area in the middle of the room. At the end of the room there would be a desk to one side I have a 125-gallon planted freshwater community tank and on the other side of the desk would be a 125g Fowler saltwater tank so I could have fish that are not reef safe. I would have the entrance to my hospital/quarantine room just past the fowler tank. This would be my sanctuary and office. All of the filtration and water source would come from a separate pump/filter house. For the wastewater I would have a massive pound probably 50 foot deep and 30 feet in diameter minimum I would want red tail catfish, clown knives, pacus basically the fish you can't have if you don't have a giant pond.
Awesome, I get to have a red tail cat fish, and then "within reason 😢". Then, within reason could include a new building 😊. I think we needed to define "within reason" if it's a condition of the build. My current delimma is keep the 75+57 side by side or switch to a 125. Length would drop one foot, but it would be its own eco system. For me the dilemma might be more of do you want 10 @ 75g or 1 @ 750g? Except for monster fish, I think the 75s will allow for a lot more choice.
I have a somewhat crazy idea. Instead of doing a black background on the back of a tank. I would actually like to have black lava rock as the background of the tank. I know lava rock is light enough how would I hold the form and fill in any small gaps?
I don’t know Lisa or Johanna (sp) but I doubt either one of them will be willing to deal with the construction that it will take to create these monsters
I would not have a over a 1000 gal Salt Water tank. I like having someone to take are of it. I want to watch fish. I don't like cleaning my house, let alone a tank.
What a great podcast.

Great stuff.
So glad you are here!
With an unlimited budget, I would do the tank in the thumbnail. That one absolute perfection.
Rod had about 30 different yellow fish in his display tank. 😂 You'll have to get a lot more specific.
Definitely with John here. Big tank. Big fish. Big gear. Minimal noise. No room for plants here or tiny fish.
Just what I needed ☺️ now I can listen to my favourite podcast while I get my jobs done.
Thank you for all the information you have given.
It's made running my 6 aquariums so much better x
Y’all out here making me look forward to Monday mornings. Doin the lords work. Doggone good show today. Well done.
Glad you are here!

Nice!
That tank sounds awesome and you have a dream team of people on your build team! 🙂

Really love the podcast. It keeps me from going crazy sitting behind a desk at work.
Glad you’re here!

Fun topic! I actually think that I might already have my dream tanks! Haha, 2 120 gallons!
Thanks for the suggestion

If you were that rich, you get what you want. Jason sounds like you want a terranium setup
Awesome episode. The Golden fish would be a Golden Baramundi. On a side note. Oscars would be Arapaima food. They gulp down whole chickens.😅
YES!!! That's the one!! Thank you!!!

ol jeremy from aquarium domains shown us that these giant tanks are within reach for anyone willing to do the work
Aquarium domain has like 5 of my dream aquariums! 😛
Aquarium domain is insane! In a good way. That 4500 gallon he has is incredible.

But you are old
Thanks for this great podcast guys. A huge thank you for this episode this was excellent and has me dreaming.
Thank you!
Kessil has some great lighting for tanks like your speaking about.
They sure do!

I would make the whole ocean my aquarium, take over the nautilus research vessel and pilot hercules nonstop for days
😀
The reality is you don't need a huge fish tank to be happy. lol.
Great point!
I’m surprised Prime Time hasn’t done a collab with Cichlid Bros. Both Illinois based.
Me too haha - Jason
@ idea for one of them to be a guest on Tank Talk?
Question is there small freshwater fish that are good for cleaning sump but do not put in a big bio load in the sump
Otos!
I have a somewhat crazy idea. Instead of doing a black background on the back of a tank. I would actually like to have black lava rock as the background of the tank. I know lava rock is light enough how would I hold the form and fill in any small gaps?
Nice!
@TheTankTalkPodcast thinking if I do that at the top I could wedge in pothos into the gaps of the rocks to hold them in place.
I don’t know Lisa or Johanna (sp) but I doubt either one of them will be willing to deal with the construction that it will take to create these monsters
They’re crazy like us - they would do it! 😀
I would not have a over a 1000 gal Salt Water tank. I like having someone to take are of it. I want to watch fish. I don't like cleaning my house, let alone a tank.
You guys really went off the deep end on this one. Looked like you were having fun but nothing of interest to me really.
Ya, it’s fun to do one in a while. Promise - next week we come back down to earth! 😀
What a waste of a show.
