I follow a creator that recently started appearing in his videos (not fish keeping). He specifically says in the intro that he started appearing because he was accused if being AI. Keep up the great work!
Hey Guy, I am enjoying your podcast, and I will say this, what you are talking about is exactly what seem to be happening in the music industry and like you are saying this seem to be the begin….
I'm actually super pro AI generally, but I have issues with some of the lower quality implementations, mainly because they are just not pleasant to look at. I'm not sure if some smaller creators who use AI imagery are just using outdated image generation models or what but they can be taxing on the eyes. Those are my only gripes, fundamentally using it as a tool doesn't bother me at all. The world is moving that direction anyway and I think it would be unwise to write off an entire emerging toolset ambiguously.
I really don’t feel like using AI in your thumbnails is a big deal. I come here for the conversation and the social aspect of hanging out with other fish addicts like me.
One major downside to certain AI thumbnails/images is the potential for people who don't know better to be set up for disappointment. Eg., if you buy a 55g setup because you loved the fish in a thumbnail only to find out that fish doesn't and cannot exist, you can create some considerable ill will. And you can never be certain a beginner will know better, because most actually don't.
Although I'm not necessarily a fan of AI; I do think I have a good sense of humor & do not have a problem with you guys doing AI thumbnails & other. You guys always give really good serious advice & have fun. Yeah some videos are crazy & fake stuff content with AI & I don't like that.
Now, aside from the thumbnail opinion I already shared, AI does scare me more than a little. I have sat through videos talking about how the computer generated images and voices will eventually be so good that they'll be able to do nearly anything. One extreme example was, AI went in and gathered all the information it could on this couple's 8 to 10 year old daughter off from TH-cam, Facebook, and Instagram. It took recordings of their daughter's voice, duplicated it, and quickly learned how to speak on its own. They then used it to call mom, telling her she was in trouble and that she needed money. What parent wouldn't do whatever they could for their kid in that scenario? Only later, when the family is out whatever money the system asked for, would they understand none of it was real. A second example, using the same little girl and her family, used some sort of aging process, and the little girl was transformed into a woman in her late teens or early 20s. It then too video of her it had been able to generate, and had her saying and doing things (I think you can imagine what horrible things I'm intentionally not saying) that would put serious strains on personal relationships with mothers and fathers, significantothers and even employers. It was, in a word, terrifying.
My, "I'll say it to your face" point is this. If you don't get the John Conner references KGTropicals John is using, you're doing life wrong, and your parents failed you.
I was curious how AI has affected Professor Jason Adams in the classroom. I’ve heard many rumors about ai papers being written in colleges and the only way they’re catching the papers is plagiarism detection.
I used AI to help with species stocking in my mbuna tank as well as filtration setup from the filters to the overall flow including wave makers. Then it also suggested all of my media to put in them. It also then had great suggestions just as an overall setup checklist. It got it 100% correct and it is a successful tank with a great assortment if color. 👍🏻
I reached KGT videos in Portuguese The mix of bizarre pronounce and literal translations that really dont make sense make them absolutelly hilarious. Nevertheless, KGT motivated me to reconnect with the hobby after decades (and to practice English too).
I have used AI to help me design and stock a 10 gallon aquarium. It was amazingly helpful and interactive. I think the maintain control and not become reactive to AI.
My hope is that Google will try to get control of the stealing of content. You guys worked a very long time in your lives to build your channels and your following .I can,t believe that someone could come and steal it all..😎😎😎😎
Please can you guys discuss the topic of an “ALL MALE AFRICAN CICHLID tank vs MIXED GENDER”. Pros and cons, aggression, does it actually help? Affect on Colors, any other things?
@ I literally can’t wait. Been waiting for your opinion on this for ever haha. I currently have an all male tank and sometimes I wonder if it’s the best move
I don't mind the thumbnails, but i am an adult who understands efficiency and ease of use. Im not sure why people have to act like babies whenever AI gets brought up
Okay, so yeah, AI is scary, but for someone to be threatening to leave a channel because they use it for their thumbnail pic? Give me a break. Grow up, people. Your inability to think for yourself is showing.
I think it's dumb too, but I can see where they're coming from: "you're either 100% real or not real at all", which serves well in many situations but not TH-cam thumbnails, even the real ones aren't ever in the video
@peadrianlastname Right? I mean, the thumbnail is just a representation of what the video is about... usually. It's the clowns who use other... images ...to draw people in that the whole Anti AI argument is justified.
18:24 This will never have the impact you think it will have. What you are describing here is what already exists. People for years have put knowledge out into the world and others have taken it and benefited from it. The only change is that AI will now distribute it instead of another person distributing it. A dirted tank with a sand cap being called a "Father Fish" tank instead of a "Walsted" tank is what you are describing and it hasn't hurt the hobby. Pardon my spelling.
Great topic. I find the thumbs down button very useful when I come across faceless videos with AI voice. And as John has shown in a few of his KGTropicals videos, human beings on TikTok can be every bit as dangerous for the hobby as AI videos have the potential to become. Conversely, the best things for our hobby are usually your independent LFS, and certainly a local hobbyist club.
@ProdigalAquarist The thumbs down is definitely not useful. It's still interaction, which is what the content creator is looking for. It's best not to click or reply at all if you really want to hurt the video's algorithm.
As a visual artist (graphic design and illustration) I don't fear the blending of workflow and the use of Ai to assist in the creation of art, I do fear that people will accept the Ai standard as art---like people will accept ai gen content as truth. People say art is subjective, and to a degree it is, but you can boil down a lot of what people like down to a handful of elements and just start cranking out commercial dribble like hygger does with their filters. They can create thousands of variations, but only need one to sell. Ai removes the human from art. As an artist, a content creator, it's a bit demoralizing to know you're going up against the machine and humanity is really okay with that...based on the numbers we're already seeing. The number of views and likes on some of those really bad ai videos indicate that people don't care. It's a wild time to be a creator.
As a computer programmer who has written programs to make decisions, Ai is just programms to give you advice/ facts or create pictures based on what you give it for informations. It still takes someone i n the background to give the AI machine data or facts. This could be biased on how the input person feels or want to have the outcome be. Do mot trust AI, it is not possible for a computer to learn on its own.
Yeah I've seen videos of dogs with a voice over and the mouth movements have line up and yeah it's funny stuff but in the wrong hands that is scary because people always take things to far 😊
It’s a win lose, in the sense that it’s huge time saver if you don’t have time or ability. But it’s a lose of the content is not choreographed to the message and misleading if only shows created imagery. Thumbnails are not really a problem, everything from ads to labels uses them so a picture doesn’t make a difference if the video it shows is to do the with subject matter. It’s no different than animation, in the sense it can be used to exaggerate or potentiate content. That swings both ways in the sense if it creates draw and the video doesn’t hold it up it becomes associated with fabrication. As to if the image supports the videos claims it creates a more dynamic story to be heard. The example I used previously was mark tremonti’s new music video, the mother, the earth and I. That video was 200% Ai generated minus marks contributions of playing and singing. To him it’s great because what was done in 15 minutes and access to a credit card saved thousands of dollars and months to years to create for a digital media team. Personally I think it looks great but becomes odd and muddy with strange details. But it is something that should seem as a tool as to become a purpose for making content. Then there’s the recreation problem. That’s theft and I’ve seen it go from personal to professional realms 100 times over. Original thought will always win over repackaged ideas, it shows and feels so it should wiped away like a smudge because it overshadows everything behind it including the original. Stay happy and healthy my friends!
I agree with Whip and Prodigal Aquarist. I don't blindly trust anything even real humans say because EVERYTHING in fish keeping is about CONTEXT. I've listened to dozens of podcasts and have a bunch of friends that work in computer science and software engineering, and the "AI is ruining things" or the "AI is scary" tropes are getting old. If you chose not to think for yourself, AI is dangerous, but so is the rest of the world. So lets cover what AI does and can do. 1) Currently, there are AI programs that are being designed to track the health and growth of your fish and water parameters. This is good, because it will augment the fishkeeper and provide a second opinion on your personal observations. 2) You can ask AI questions and get responses much faster than asking a TH-camr, and the answers are not that much worse than TH-camrs, because again, everything is about CONTEXT. 3) Using the right AI is important, I mainly use Perplexity, because its consistency is good and it provides citations that are easy to access. For example, perplexity cites real journal articles or online content like Jason's TH-cam videos, which has happened to me. 4) The more misleading AI generated content on the internet, the more real, verified humans become valuable. I fundamentally agree with Jason on how AI stolen content from creators will reduce the value of new information, however, similar to what John said, tech companies will boost their AI capacities to counteract this while users who know basic thinking skills will flock to verified humans with good content. This means that even new fish keepers will be fine so long as they can think for themselves. 5) Click-bait is click-bait, whether it is made by AI or humans. The riff-raff humans and AI making misleading content will always be present to take advantage of people who don't want to think for themselves. If AI makes better sensational content with unverifiable narratives and people enjoy it, then let them have it. But eventually serious fans of real knowledge will latch onto accounts with consistently verifiable, and interesting content. 6) Social media monitization is changing, clicks and watch time are not the only way to make money. When in niche fields, like fishkeeping, the average mid-grade and above TH-camr now supplements with merch and subscriptions. 7) To use AI currently it must augment both real content creators and users. John used a great example of the good AI could do with translating into several different languages, the issue was that he was using Joe Rogan's voice. In the next few years, John will be able to feed his own voice into an AI system (from all his videos) and speak Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French etc. 8) Transparency is key, I don't mind content creators using AI generated content so long as they explicitly say what is and isn't AI augmented. For example, I write some blog posts with an AI and I cite which AI I used. When you use AI, PLEASE cite which AI you use, include version, and the prompt in your show notes (which you didn't do). This is positive too because maybe your audience will want to play with the AI you've been using while you also boost your transparency. Remember, not all AI is created equal.
(Imagine Siri voice) It's a question how far. As a retired old school artist. Ai has the potential to eliminate creativity. I was an animator, and to keep up with the Jones, I had to learn CG. Will Ai eliminate animators? BTW John I just eliminated your (Man Card).😅
I plan on stealing someone's (I have no idea how to find out who's) content idea here very soon, for I know it's been done before by multiple people even within the relatively small group we have here as aquarium content creators. I'm going to do an "Ask Me Anything" series. One of the things I'm going to do, if I can't find someone locally to do it, is create an AI person to ask the questions my subscribers have sent in. AI will take over image usage, unfortunately. Photographers and artist will be hurt badly. Just like small mom and pop retailers are hurt by Amazon. People don't care about the ethics of either, they just want the cheapest, easiest path.
Another scary thing, you're talking about adults who can better discern reality vs ai. How do we help our kids navigate this and know and value the real deal?
This is not coming. There is no way I can have a connection with Ai .I subscribe to someone because I can relate to them are we have the same opinion about something .No one is subscribing to a Chanel with Ai running it
Thumbnails and humor videos are great entertainment. (we can all use a laugh) Getting knowledge and information from AI is garbage put in by some idiot..
I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill. For the hobby, people will look for real information given by real people. Keeping fish isn't simple. It requires some math and science. People with that level of intelligence will be able to understand a good video from a knowledgeable person vs a crap one. Anyone misled by an AI video probably wouldn't do well or stick with the hobby anyway. As for stealing content, you don't need AI to do that. Bootlegs and stolen clips have been around longer than i have. I wouldn't be surprised if scribes stole from each other thousands of years ago. You even point out the videos you find with your stolen info don't do well, so that's already proven to not be an issue. We can already do deep fake videos, too. They weren't used to any great effect beyond comedy for this election. And i don't think people will care enough about aquariums to make malicious deep fakes. Hobbies don't get attacked like that. Finally, I'll mention Fish For Thought. Chris has a weekly show that shows terrible tick tock fish trends. Again, it didn't take any advanced technology to make money on view for bad fishkeeping. All of that said, the market will regulate itself as it does with everything else. If people want AI videos, they will flourish. If they don't want them, they will fail. As for my opinion, i think the voices are grating as hell and I've clicked off of videos that probably had good info or builds that used the auto translate just because i can't stand them. So i think quality voices would be nice and t really help the global community spread more info and techniques.
@@tentyme1 and I completely agree with you, try to look at that the possibility that this will be a good benefit to much more people and bring peace of mind for those who need. So far I have converted many many friends and they see the benefits. I am sure your voice will find an echo round you. God bless you my friend

“Out of the Ball Park” gentlemen. 🎉
Total nostalgia over the mention of Cyberdyne
Every aquarium hobbyist needs to see this. Instagram is bloated with unnatural photos.

I’m gonna make an ai page where it’s just your videos but with you having hair
Make the hair interesting not just a regular haircut ; long hair Mohawk etc lol

It’s a win lose, in the sense that it’s huge time saver if you don’t have time or ability. I get AI generated answers sometimes when asking fish questions. I always look for real content though. Scarry for new fish keepers.

Make Aquariums Great Again !!!!
