  • Pharmacology nursing NCLEX review question on bronchodilators and corticosteroid administration for a patient with asthma.
This NCLEX pharmacology review question will test your nursing knowledge about how to properly administer a bronchodilator and corticosteroid metered-dose inhaler. To answer this question correctly, you must know the mechanism of action of both the bronchodilator (Albuterol) and corticosteroid (Fluticasone).
What is Albuterol? It is a short-acting bronchodilator. A bronchodilator (just as its name says) opens the bronchi and bronchioles of the lungs. When this happens more air is able to flow through the lungs. This is vital for the patient who has asthma because they experience bronchoconstriction.
What is a Fluticasone? It is a corticosteroid used to prevent symptoms in patients with asthma. It will work by decreasing inflammation in the small airways.
To administer these medications, the bronchodilator will be administered FIRST and then 5 minutes later the corticosteroids will be administered.
The bronchodilator will open the airway first so when the corticosteroids are inhaled they can do their job within the lungs.
It is important to remember that AFTER administering inhaled corticosteroids, the patient must gargle and rinse the mouth with water and spit (or a spacer can be used). The reason for this is because corticosteroids can cause thrush.

Hi Sara, Ive been watching your videos for a quiet long time but never give any comment as I always said that once i give you an appreciation message it must be ultimate...but now I realize that your great efforts and time has no any equivalent words of appreciation...Thanks for your straightforward, uncomplicated and effortless lectures. You are amazingly genius, gorgeous inside and outside. Thanks

I'm not an RN but I am an Asthma patient. The answer is D. Give Albuterol first and wait 5 minutes and then give Fluticosone.

Thank you so much for all of your videos! They are extremely helpful in giving exactly what we need to know. I also love how in your disease videos for causes, S&S, you explain WHY those are causes and s/s instead of just listing them. Knowing the "why" really helps with critical thinking and connecting dots on exams!
Do you think you could make a video series on Asthma?

Hi Sarah. I have a question about drug categories. I am currently in a pharmacology class, and our Professor will talk about drug categories quite a bit. We will even be told that we should know drugs by categories. But when asked if there's a list of these categories so we can fit them in she's a bit hesitant about it. She'll say, "oh well... there's that suffix ending sheet that you have." But she'll go on to say that that sheet is not complete. She'll also mention that some drugs can go into multiple categories. But as I say, she's not really quick in telling you what categories thing should be in. As I look in the book sometimes I'm even more confused, because they don't always mention what groupings these drugs should be put under. Sarah I'm having a tough enough time as it is in Pharmacology, and this just adds to it. Is there any help or a list that you can point me to? Thank you

Hello :) Pharmacology includes so many drugs that I don't think there is this complete list (it would be like a million pages long lol). Pharm is really mind boggling because it's true that many drugs can be used for this disease but it can also be used for this disease.
Personally, for me I remember drugs by diseases because although most drugs fit under certain categories...there are subcategories of that category (like newer generations) and they can causeddifferent problems etc.
In my "How to Study for Pharm" video (th-cam.com/video/KGCxR_a9694/w-d-xo.html) I talk about some ways to remember drugs and make studying easier (like recommended study guides). Hang in there....when you become a nurse all those drugs really do click because you administer the same ones over and over.
