Thank you for your videos. I have been singing classical for years. My teacher 30 years ago taught me to sing effortlessly and I was able to sing for hours and hours every day and never had a problem, but I must admit that I never really new what was going on in my throat. I just remember that I had to unlearn the idea of using my body to push up and support the notes as I go up and up. This at first doesn't feel right, but when you practice with this in mind it becomes normal and produces better sound. I have used the phrase when helping people " the body doesn't care". Let the body go, sing from the eyes up. Singing is 90% imagination and 10% physical effort. Of course the more fit you are the easier it will be and the better you will sound. I suppose you could say that until seeing your videos, I have been singing blind. But now I see! Thank you so much.
I give Aadhan (call for prayer) regularly in our local Masjid, and I was looking for a way to recite relatively high pitches compared to my usual deep voice, I believe your tips are amazing, I can get quite high but I still am looking for being comfort around those high notes, thanks for such great content.
Thats great. Thanks Mohammad, so glad it is helping. You may want to get your vocal type and then the exercises for your vocal type. That will help your high notes. Start here: www.powertosing.com/discover-your-vocal-type-wt
Practical and effective exercises. Makes a world of difference at high notes. Much more texture, volume without strain and less tension , airiness. Thanks for making this available.
Thank you for these exercises. I got sick ten years ago and what I thought would be temporary laryngitis persisted and I lost my fifth and sixth octave. Due to this is started singing around whatever it was and trying to hit high notes I used to be able to hit so easily. To do this I had to raise my larynx. It’s been ten years and I still haven’t fully recovered my sixth octave. I’m starting to realize that I took on some really bad habits maneuvering around my issues, that includes a raised larynx. Finding your videos is helping me stabilize my larynx. It’s really hard once I start getting to my high C’s, but it’s starting to come along. I’m just so very grateful for your videos. Much love to you for caring about others and their voices ♥️
Thanks and good luck. If you haven't been to and ENT to have your cords checked out with a scope, you may want to...just to eliminate the possibility there is any damage to the cords. It's good to know either way. :)
I could be wrong, but I believe you're supposed to be in your mixed voice for several notes when you switch from your chest to your head voice to have a cleaner transition. The mixed voice is supposed to help make the switch easier.
I worked all the morning on the take which was to high for me and i got in troubless. After i said "GA" i sang it at easy. Thank you sooooo much! You helped very, very!!
Hi Chuck, thanks for sharing such great content. Your exercises have helped me to better understand what it feels like to sing higher notes freely without pulling chest. But how do I go from singing perfect "goos" to other vowels and ultimately words in a song? It seems to be quite a big jump! Keep up the good work! George
The short answer is instead of singing the words, use the exercise words. An example would be to substitute the words with goo...taking care to maintain the same feeling as you felt doing the exercise. Do that several times until you can sing the phrase easily with goo. Then sing the words, striving to duplicated the same feeling...only with words this time.
3:41 Should've continued the video after the bubble part, now I found myself thinking I was singing better at Karaoke night by replacing the words and singing that way. No but on a serious note: I used to be told to do that exercise a dozen years ago and I had never understood why. Now I'll get back to that habit, thanks! And will definitely have to record myself and A/B myself before and after your other video exercise about "ng" to avoid pulled chest. Thanks a million
kiersteve narra Hi Kiersteve Narra! Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you found this helpful. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have as you are learning.
I've realized I'd been closing the air passage in my throat up to the back of my tongue. When I realized how to keep the larynx off, I felt that the passage opened up way way down further, like almost down to my chest. I had been having problems with my ears and nose, hearing those cracky plastic sounds in my ears. When this passage was opened, I could also feel my ears opened (like winds literally puffed out), it was amazing. So many things I've been doing wrong! It makes my throat more relieved and my larynx doesn't go up. It's so much more relaxed and effective to sing that way and it improves my posture and mental health, too.
I’ve never seen someone share about the same problem I have, since I haven’t either. When my nose and ear are open, my thoughts have far more clarity and I become better at basically everything physically. When they aren’t, it’s misery. The difference between us though is that when my ears are open, I hear those ‘creaky plastic sounds’. But when they’re not, I don’t. Wonder what’s up with that.
No, as of today, I don't have a video with exercises for rehabilitating vocal cords. It's such an individual thing, and how you do them is so important, I think you would be best served to take live lessons, either on skype or in person. :)
Fortunately I have already started taking lessons, but lessons as you know can be pricy. I have a one on one, 1 - 2x a week depending, but I have been fascinated to hear other perspectives, especially in regards to the larynx. So I started looking into additional warm ups to do on the days I can't meet with my coach. Thank you for your videos and thank you for responding! :)
Lip Bubbles and Tongue Trills are speech therapy exercises - never meant for singing. No one should consciously try to control their larynx except in keeping it neutral through proper breath support and a "uh" larynx position. The larynx is a responsive organ, not an active one. But that laryngeal dampening should be a mental direction, not a physical direction. Your "Les Miserable" singing example shows just how weak lip bubbles train to voice to become; they simply don't compress the folds enough to create enough frequency response, resulting a weak sound lacking in a balanced tonality.
Hello, I'm Philipp from Germany. Im currently 17 years old and I'm taking singing lessons for half a year. I watched A LOT of your videos. I got a problem: Everytime I do some of the gee or goo exercises trying to keep my larynx down, I always get exhausted immediately, and I sometimes just can't relax the vocal chords above the f above middle c. This makes it really hard to practise these. I feel like I can't get any forward. My larynx keeps coming up trying to sing higher notes. :/ Any advice? P.S. I love your videos more than anything! You are a huge help for a lot of young singers, thank you very much for that! You are the best of TH-cam! Keep going! ♥️
Hi Toda: one thing that you must remember is 17 is a difficult time for us guys. You voice is just about through going through the vocal change. Until then...everything is a little harder. Meanwhile...let's say you do the exercise at an 8 out of 10 in loudness. Do the exercises at a 3 or 4. Softly. Second, as you so it softer, make sure the vowel doesn't change...be very strict about keeping the vowel sounding the same. Third, allow the sound to go very light and hooty. If you softly do a hi "hoot" like an owl, that's what it feels like if you allow the sound to go hooty or hollow sounding. Try these and see what happens. Good luck.
It helps me, especially Dopey sound, but I can`t use it for my highest note - C5 (in falsetto). I can take this note only this very big tension. How can sing that note without tension and go higher?
Hi Euka: If you will take your finger and place it under your chin, then push in gently on your neck as you drag your finger down your neck. The first small bump you feel is the top of your larynx, or your Adams Apple.
Thanks Chuck, but I have one question. How am I supposed to release tension on "e"? I know it has to do with tongue, but it is simply hard for me to keep my mouth wide.
+Gb Republic Hi Gb Republic! There's good tension or friendly tension and bad tension. The friendly tension is within the vocal cords themselves and helps us sing the vowels like "e" . But this tension can become "unfriendly" by singing too loud or pressing the cords together too tight. Try doing it softer or less loud. Try relaxing the vocal cords somewhat without becoming too breathy. Also try doing the "e" exercise with "oo" lips. That is "oo" as in "too". See if this helps a little. There is no need keeping your mouth open wide. Just relax and let your jaw drop a little as you sing higher. Good luck.
Roses1401 Hi Roses1401! Thanks for commenting. I'd love to understand more about why this was helpful. Sometimes I give information based on my own experience or my students. What do you struggle with the most?
Power To Sing Thank you very much for question! I can sing very good deep voice. But if i am singing high note i have to be very, very loud. If i do record and then i play back, unfortunatelly i don't like it.
Power To Sing After i have try it with Dope/Hooty Gee it sounds much better. The sound is very clear. So i am very happy with your lesson here. I thank you so much again Mister!
Roses1401 You might find it helpful to go to powertosing.com and take the power test. I suspect you are vocal type pulled chest/high larynx. There are some exercises in the Knowledge Center that may help. I am so pleased you are finding this helpful. Thanks.
Very interesting . I tried a song with the bubbles and went great... opposite to when I sing. If am able to do it in that way, does it mean I should be capable of singing it effortlessly with practice? The reason I ask is because I need to choose a song for my first presentation in 4 weeks (as student) and am struggling with high notes.
They seem to get your voice to be better. But a question, Will they help in every language? Like, you know the famous Rabindra Tagore and his famous bengali songs. Is the way of english songs different from other songs(bengali, hindi, arabic, etc) and will these exercises work for all type of singing? The Rabindra Sangeets (songs) are quite different and I panic that they won't work for these R.S. Lata Mangeshkar (respected singer of India) and Celine Dion are not at all same but you know, I want to reach the top of both english and bengali songs, even other and that's a pretty difficult task. So please, help me out!
+Aryana Sreshtha Reede Hi A.S.R.! Great question. What these exercises tend to do is help get your voice where it should be. If it should be in Chest voice, they help do that. If your voice should be in Head Voice, they will help do that. If it should be in a Mix of Chest and Head Voice, they will help do that. It doesn't matter what language or genre of music you sing. And they will help you have a healthy voice so you can sing for years. My opinion is these things will help you sing anything you want.
+MCA Arts Hi! Here's a good exercise to keep the external muscles from pulling up the Larynx. Try doing the same scales as shown here, but use the word "goo". As the pitch goes higher, make sure the word remains "goo" and doesn't become "guh" or "ga" or some other sound. Make your lips keep a narrow "oo" formation. Don't let them open to "Oh". You may want to watch Episode #26. I demonstrate using the "goo" exercise. This will help you.
Vibration caused by the sound waves coming from the vocal cords. Sound waves travel through the air and cause vibrations in the tissues of the throat and head.
It's just temporary until you an do it connected without the larynx going up or chest voice being pulled up. But it's useful in the exercises periodically, to help you stay balanced.
There will be a little bit of rising, that's ok. If it's excessive, then see if you can add some of the dopy sound along with the bubbles and lip trill. As you go higher it should get hootier not pinched and no cracking.
Many do, but some do not. It's not the genre that causes a high larynx. It's the basic technique they use. And the larynx may be up in one part of the song and not in other parts.
When I'm in my head voice I can't hold my larnyx neutral or lower It's getting higher. Is it normal for head voice? or Is it just a bad habbit And when I go to higher pitches on dopey sound I use a lot of compressed and it sounds really bad. Should I stop use compression that much
Your larynx will move slightly like a buoy in gentle waters. With time and correct practice the larynx will stay at the level where you speak no matter whether you sing chest, middle or head voice. Our habits are part of the problem. The other part is not knowing how to do it in the first place. Reduce the volume when you do the exercises. Experiment by doing them very soft and easy. See what happens.
Oh! Okay thank you my larynx were high in head register all the time. And maybe this might be the reason why I am not be able to blend my head and chest.
Whenever i try too do the bubble or thounge thrill, my larynx raises everythime, and i can feel a strain, i keep going out and in of singing correctly and it really sucks, Its like sometimes i can hit it rigth from the start, and other times it takes 10 minutes too find the mix, without straining. Any tips?
If I were teaching you live and you did what you described, I would have you try it by say "goo" but keeping it very hootie so it didn't pinch as you sang higher. Also maybe an "ng" sound as in "ming".
Sir If this is going to do what I think it's going to do ill never forget your help. It's like being set free, sounds crazy but I love to sing ............
Having a hard time with this ... When I push my larynx down then try to sing .I can't I have no range and my voice gets choked off .. How dos this work in detail PLEASE Thanks
Really like the exercises, but the larynx SHOULD rise and lower in singing despite what a lot of people think. What was demonstrated when going up in a "thick-fold" sound here was constriction of the "false folds" and not sure to a risen larynx. Whilst I do agree - rising a larynx too high can become problematic, but a risen larynx for higher singing is an acoustic changer and allows for a more resonate sound in the pharynx. Nice trills! :) If you'd like to discuss this further I'd love to share views! :)
Literally tried bubble voice (because I literally can't do a tongue trill for more than .05 seconds) and everything just stops by itself when i try to go a little higher, anyone know how to help?
There’s no evidence that high larynx techniques are harmful or ineffective, and the high larynx coordinations you show only don’t work because they don’t go with the sound you are after. These “absolute truths” you sell are in fact highly conditional. It’s like someone saying the trombone slide should always be in the same position. Some of your “bad” examples sounded pretty good, and closer to what a lot of people are after in certain rep, and also are more sustainable because you had a higher closed quotient. I really wish we could have more reasonable discussions than this, and present a balanced view instead of forcing our own preferences on others.
I don't know everything about singing. However, I was fortunate to learn many things from awesome teachers , including how to keep the larynx down. All combined, it's been life changing for me and my family. Fortunately, I've seen the same life changing impact on my students. So, my experience is opposite from yours.
0:040:046:49 God! I haven't hear you singing a complete song; but just in the exercices- which I thank to you; your voice sound " tired", warn out ; have little resonance and brightness ; it can be appreciate . S 0:04 ir, your voice is beautiful, I'm sorry; although I insist does not sound so powerfull and with so much resonance in the exercice. About " boring" 0:06 excercice, yes... all are the same; no originality at all. Now I' ve a new- new teacher who teaches me to train my vocal, support muscle, before the excercice..
hello chuck! you gave 4 exercises here to lower the larynx. Can i just choose 1 exercise to sing the difficult song? or do i have to be able to do it across all 4 techniques? i can do it in the lip bubble no problem but i lose the dopey quality of the gee/ goo when the notes go higher so i was wondering if the lip bubble would be enough. Also, when doing it in the lip bubble, do i do it in the same volume as i would do the actual song (belting)? thank you. this video was exceptionally educational for me.
+joyce janik Hi Joyce. The lip bubble is the easiest to use. And will help immediately. However, it is quite different from singing. The gee and goo is closer to singing because it is using actual vowels and consonants. So it will benefit you even more to eventually be able to do those while keeping the dopey quality. Doing the lip bubble will be more effective in a medium to medium-soft volume. This will help reduce overall tension around the vocal cords. The dopey sound is used as a temporary exercise until you are successful singing without tension, stress or breaks. But the bubble lips can be used in this application and as warm ups every time you sing. I'm glad you've found the video helpful. Thanks!
@@alan_cdt You are at the hardest age to sing for us guys. Be patient with yourself. Be very strict to do the exercises exactly as demonstrated. Over time you will gradually be able to learn how to do it. I promise you you can do it. But it will be several more years before your voice stops changing.
No precautions...it's the same as all of us. You may find it helpful to watch this video and follow it's instructions: th-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/w-d-xo.html
I am sorry that I have to correct you but the larynx has no bone tissue! The only bone in the neck besides the spine is the hyoid bone and that is not part of the larynx! :)
Thanks for explaining everything instead of just saying “do these exercises”

If am able to do it in that way, does it mean I should be capable of singing it effortlessly with practice? The reason I ask is because I need to choose a song for my first presentation in 4 weeks (as student) and am struggling with high notes.
They seem to get your voice to be better. But a question,
Will they help in every language?
Oh, I'm really glad to hear it! Thanks! Well, I'm just 11 years old girl who is just mad for melody
+Aryana Sreshtha Reede Great! You have a bright future!
Oh my god this video is amazing! Thank you makes so much sense 🙏😊
Glad it was helpful!

What if i cant trill my tongue ?
+MCA Arts Hi! Here's a good exercise to keep the external muscles from pulling up the Larynx. Try doing the same scales as shown here, but use the word "goo". As the pitch goes higher, make sure the word remains "goo" and doesn't become "guh" or "ga" or some other sound. Make your lips keep a narrow "oo" formation. Don't let them open to "Oh". You may want to watch Episode #26. I demonstrate using the "goo" exercise. This will help you.
Nice
Really nice courses , good infomation
Thanks for share it
What is the meaning of resonance?
Vibration caused by the sound waves coming from the vocal cords. Sound waves travel through the air and cause vibrations in the tissues of the throat and head.

Does this mean that whenever singing high notes, the singer should sound dopey/hooty, or is this ONLY for the exercise?
Only for the exercise... If you do this, your larynx will be trained to stay low so you can hit those high notes easily
+I_love_you_baby - thank you for the clarification.
It's just temporary until you an do it connected without the larynx going up or chest voice being pulled up. But it's useful in the exercises periodically, to help you stay balanced.
Right on!
+Power To Sing - Thank you for the response.
Looking in the mirror, I can see my larynx rise as I do the lip bubbles & tongue trills. How do I make it stay down?
There will be a little bit of rising, that's ok. If it's excessive, then see if you can add some of the dopy sound along with the bubbles and lip trill. As you go higher it should get hootier not pinched and no cracking.
Why do I sound so weird when I do Dopey Gee go higher..? My voice sounds like 90yo grandpa.. is it normal..
Because it does sound weird at first. But I'm really not sure that all 90 year old grandpa's sound the same.
Is it possible to pull the larynx up even when doing the bubble lips or tongue trill? I feel strained even when doing bubble lips/tongue trills.
Yes it's possible, but harder to do. Think about adding the "Dumb Sound" with the bubble lips. That helps me.
Do pop singers sing with a high larynx?
Many do, but some do not. It's not the genre that causes a high larynx. It's the basic technique they use. And the larynx may be up in one part of the song and not in other parts.
When I'm in my head voice I can't hold my larnyx neutral or lower It's getting higher.
Is it normal for head voice? or Is it just a bad habbit
And when I go to higher pitches on dopey sound I use a lot of compressed and it sounds really bad.
@@PowerToSing Thank you for the response, i'll try too do those excercises. I actually found it out yesterday so now i can sing wihtout strain.
That makes sense that's how to teach nice work ...............
Sir If this is going to do what I think it's going to do ill never forget your help.
It's like being set free, sounds crazy but I love to sing ............
Thanks. And it definitely works :)
Having a hard time with this ... When I push my larynx down then try to sing .I can't I have no range and my voice gets choked off .. How dos this work in detail PLEASE Thanks
Hi! Would likely need to hear what you are doing to give you specifics for your voice. Can you send a recording?
Sir I'll send a record of my voice to you. can you teach me pleaaaase!
If you'd like to discuss this further I'd love to share views! :)
Thanks your comments Joshua.
In singing
yes, singing.
06:30 Dopey Sound
hummm
you're good
is this exercise also include in the vocal types exercises mp3?
Yes on the pulled chest-high larynx mp3 download.
Literally tried bubble voice (because I literally can't do a tongue trill for more than .05 seconds) and everything just stops by itself when i try to go a little higher, anyone know how to help?
How old are you sirsnail?
@@PowerToSing what does age have to do with it?
@@NotSirSnail What you are describing often happens to my teenage boys who are going through their vocal change.
@@PowerToSing Oh well I'm well past that stage already, its just not a regular thing I do.
@@NotSirSnail So something else is going on. Are you experiencing any other unusual issues with your voice that before was not a problem?
0:04 0:04 6:49 God! I haven't hear you singing a complete song; but just in the exercices- which I thank to you; your voice sound " tired", warn out ; have little resonance and brightness ; it can be appreciate .
Have you sing for longer- it seem to me, religious songs, kind of gospel..Am I wrong, sorry
I'm an opera student..no original exercises, sorry..

@@Laura-cq1np Fantastic! Keep after it.
hello chuck!
you gave 4 exercises here to lower the larynx.
Thanks!
How do you speak like Michel'le

GOSH DAMN ITTTTT I CANT DO ITTTTTT
How old are you? It can make it harder...depending on how young you are.
Power To Sing Im 15 years old
@@alan_cdt You are at the hardest age to sing for us guys. Be patient with yourself. Be very strict to do the exercises exactly as demonstrated. Over time you will gradually be able to learn how to do it. I promise you you can do it. But it will be several more years before your voice stops changing.
Power To Sing Ohhh that makes sense, well thanks for the advice
Hi
i cant tung trill.....
Do bubble lips and "Goo" instead.
HAHAHAH Yeap lil baby. Go goo! Gaga. Tung trill is for grown ups.
2:28 lmao
can anybody get a stable larynx with exercise?I m 17.
Yes! But your age increases the difficulty because you are still going through a vocal change and maturation.
Power To Sing ok sir.thanks for help and any precautions for my vocal according to my age?
No precautions...it's the same as all of us. You may find it helpful to watch this video and follow it's instructions: th-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/w-d-xo.html
background music is too loud and distracting
maybe its the cocktail party effect of the hearing aid
I am sorry that I have to correct you but the larynx has no bone tissue! The only bone in the neck besides the spine is the hyoid bone and that is not part of the larynx! :)
Thank you, no need to apologize, Robaerto71. The bone has been excised!
Chuck- Your exercises are always too fast, especially for the beginner.
Sorry about that.
Your voice is shaky
