The can of denatured alcohol you used is not isopropyl as you mentioned but ethyl alcohol with an added denaturing chemical (likely methanol). MInor point. Thanks for the videos!

Tip: to keep spare belts fresh for a very long time; put them in a plastic bag and store them in the freezer.

      Does that really work?
The one thing that I have noticed regarding rubber is that all rubber belts and rubber speaker surrounds have failed that I keep in my garage. The garage is made from galvanized metal sheets and changes temperature as quickly as the weather outside but these same items have no problems inside my house where the temperature is always controlled. My central heating system is never turned off, even during summer, though it's thermostat keeps it from running during summer months, It's winter down here in Australia now. I'm wondering what it is that destroys rubber? Is it the heat? Is it the cold? Is it the moisture? Or a combination of those elements?

@@PeterMilanovski Heat, moisture, oxygen, and temperature change are bad for most rubber compounds. Some modern synthetic rubbers like viton are much more resilient.

@@1959Berre I have had rubber belts in a sealed zip lock plastic bag turn into a black sticky paste but they were stored in my garage! I'm sure that there's a lot more to rubber than most people realise and it's something that I plan on learning more about in the near future. I clearly don't know enough about rubber as I should so a new mission is about to get underway, I don't do things by half LoL, this is surely going to consume me and annoy my wife with all the new discoveries that will be made lol..

@@PeterMilanovski There are volatile compounds in the rubber that will evaporate when heated I think

@@19janiboy96 I will have to admit that I don't really know much about rubber, all that I know is based on personal experience. Generally speaking, I have always tried to stay away from foam surrounds on speakers because they seemed to fall apart with time but the rubber surrounds on speakers tended to last for ever. But recently I discovered to my horror that the rubber surrounds on speakers that I have kept in my garage have deteriorated while the ones with foam surrounds are still fine! Go figure. The only difference that I can see is that in the garage, temperature fluctuates with the day, where as inside my house the temperature is constant year round. All the problems that I'm experiencing with rubber is happening in the garage. Both places don't receive natural sunlight so as far as I know, it's temperature! But I can't say at which temperature the effect happens at...

Enjoyable video John and Snickers, thank you. Please note; actual real printed resistors on the board. It's always worth cleaning and demagnetizing the head - helps with the high frequencies.

Please make a video on KA2206B amplifier ic as it is rated to deliver about 4.7 watts RMS output only with the power of 9v
It would be great if you make a video on this class AB chip amp as it is rated quiet powerful with respect to power supply of 9v only

I had a simpler version of that box. It served me pretty well. You know it made an appearance in "Purple Rain?" I notice you use a Kill A Watt. I overloaded mine and now it reads current when there isn't any. Want me to ship it to you? Maybe you can find which component failed and get some traffic. It's a popular product.

Hi, can you tell me if this player works on 110v only or it can be used on 220v as well. And if not is it easy to make it dual , or maybe just conect a 9v transformer on battery terminals . ? Thanks

Which Amplifier IC did Toshiba choose to use in this model John?
Also, to really service cassette mechanisms you have to pull out the flywheels with their shafts to clean out all the old grease. Unfortunately this means that you have to deal with removing the delicate and fragile split washers that hold in the flywheels from the front tape drive spindles..
It's a tough job but well worth it if you plan on keeping it... Otherwise, great job on the success of getting it to function so quickly..

They are usually press fit (held on by friction). If it slips off, look for a hair line crack if it is plastic.

Yeah, but I really wouldn't say 'strike again', as it's an old boombox from when that sort of thing was common.

Are boomboxes even still a thing?

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Believe it or not, there's a fairly niche market for cassette boom boxes, and a couple of OEMs are releasing new radio-tape units (featuring Bluetooth as well, of course!). Not sure I'd call them 'boom boxes', but Record-ology reviewed a couple a few months ago. And it's my understanding that one Chinese company has begun making cassette tapes again - though they're just the regular old ferric types. It's still in the 'tentative steps' phase - they'll start making better gear if/when the market expands the way it did with records.

@@xaenon digital storage is so much better. I had a pretty decent tape deck back in the day too. I liked using Denon metal tapes in it.
