Maybe the switches were oxidized; this happens quite often and using them makes the unit work again. It would be a good idea to work all the switches back and forth a few times or spray contact cleaner on them.
I don't have this Toshiba anymore, but the knob should pull right off. You can try to get 2 spoons under the knob and then put equal pressure on both sides; the spoons have to be opposite each other. Maybe the spoons will fit under the edge of the knob. Do this slowly and carefully.

Hello. This could even be a bad contact problem if you are lucky. If you don't have contact cleaner, you can try working all switches and controls a few times. If that doesn't work you might have to get the contact cleaner, which is something you should do anyway on such an old unit. Also see if it does this with all functions; radio, cassette, etc. If it still doesn't work you will need the schematic and test instruments. It could be any number of things.

That is the function switch. Yes, that switch and all the other switches too. But, you can also leave everything alone, since everything is working.
