    I DO NOT HAVE TOURETTES, but I relate to this video so much. I have Diagnosed ADHD and a Panic Disorder. I want to focus on the ADHD here because after my grades went up and I started frequently visiting the doctor for my meds (I didn't want my grades to go down because I couldn't focus and the meds worked for me.) Well, I've been told I don't usually seem ADHD and that I focus easily, that I don't struggle with it. And this perception came probably because I'm actively medicated in school and I'll hyperfocus. It feels so bad to be accused of faking a mental health issue or disorder and I can't understand why people don't learn to say "I don't deal with this, so I can't understand this to the point where I can accuse someone else of not having it." And even if you do deal with something, the symptoms of most things vary from person to person.

    I agreed with every single thing you said. I've been watching your channel for about 4 years because I was fascinated with Tourette's syndrome and wanted to educate myself. I was happy to see you overcome obstacles and even treat your tics. I also thought it was brave of you to talk about your condition and mental illness, because I was going through major depression at the time. I started watching Sweet Anita a few months ago because I was getting into gaming, and she was a gamer. I saw videos of some of her funny tics, and of her answering questions about Tourette's. As I started following her, I saw how she was a sweet, intelligent person. She does rescue work, takes care of her mom, and produces content despite having a condition that makes her blurt out things she doesn't want to say. I also learn that she didn't get a diagnosis until she was 24, so she went through life scared, depressed, and empty because she didn't know what was wrong with her. Streaming shows how brave she is, overcoming her social anxiety by embracing what made her anxious in the first place. And how people reacted to her n-word tic is so asinine. In the video you see that she clearly doesn't want to be saying it, and she even turns off the mic while trying to suppress it. I'm black myself, and I know that no black person with half a brain would be offended by a girl whose father is black, saying a racial slur that she literally can't control. All you have to do is watch her content to see that she's not faking. The proof is right there. There's one video that even shows how alcohol affects her condition and makes her tic less. I wish these idiots would leave her alone and let her play Overwatch in peace.

      I don't think she would for a minute ever say the n word. So j belie she has Tourette's. Being brave, sweet (in her channel name?!), etc just happens to bring her thousands of thirsty fans...that make her money. I'm a little sceptical of that. What I'm most sceptical of is out of the blue insults immediately directed at and making fun of her simps (who are also stupid enough to just give her money). Someone makes a comment that isn't a trigger but she doesn't like, a convenient tic occurs, full of specific new insults, some that she doesn't utter again. Nah, I put scepticism aside for a long time but she definitely plays it up. And she shows remarkable business acumen for someone with uncontrollable outbursts.

    This will sound like absolute speculation, but, even though I don't have Tourettes, I think I can understand you. When I think of something dumb, my conscience censors me and calls me bad names. Everyone has this (because, as a greater rule, we all carry the potential for all mental disorders). The difference seems to be that you actually pronounce those words, whereas in me they never go further than the mere thought. If you understand what I'm talking about, or can relate to this, let me know, and we can continue talking if you wish.

  • @ChrisS-mk1yr
    @ChrisS-mk1yr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thank you Melissa for making such a well thought out, moving and also educational video for those who aren't knowledgeable when it comes to Coprolalia and even Tourette Syndrome in general. I think when it comes to the Coprolalia aspect, which I myself have dealt with daily for 6 years as part of my TS, it's just another tic, a sound that I make that happens to be more complex than some of the others.... another misfiring neuron. What I used to find interesting was that my cat was able to differentiate between me telling him off as a tic and me actually telling him off due to the tone of voice that I would use when it was genuine, pets can be very perceptive. I remember you telling me when we spoke over Skype that Coprolalia isn't actually swearing per se, which is so true because very often when I say an "offensive" word or a complex string of words, here's no context to them and even when they present as having intent behind them I can assure all the doubters that there isn't any; not in my case or Anita's.
    My question in terms of when it comes to faking a syndrome would be WHY Tourette? I've seen some of her videos where she is having jerky, physical and self-injurious tics which I know from experience can be very painful and tiring, and given how she has to still put up negative comments, repetitive, annoying questions and disbelief from some of the people who message her on top of that, why not choose different tics to fake that wouldn't result in negative consequences? Why choose a condition that is mocked, misunderstood and highly stigmatised? People need to understand that the brain is an incredibly complex organ and therefore there is pretty much an infinite amount of disorders that can result from different parts of it not working as they normallly would... but many people can't grasp that simple concept, so disbelief and accusations of someone's condition not being real are always going to be an issue to some degree. On a side note, I loved your daughter analogy... absolutely spot on, we can go minutes, hours or even days without ticcing. There's such a wide spectrum with TS.
    Thank you for continuing to be such a great advocate for TS, I hope that the day will come when we will be accepted and understood more than we are now and can be comfortable in our own skin. Time will tell.

    People with tourette's don't necessarily tic all the time. Some days my daughter's tics are really mellow. You can barely notice. Other days she is literally trashing the house. Anyone whose bothered to do even the most minimal amount of research would know that tics wax and wane. Someday my daughter's tics are all internal so no one can feel/see them but her. People seriously need to mind their own business.

    Ok Let me ask and sorry if I sound too skeptical. So when you have Tourette s it make you day things that you can't control or body ticks. I understand that. My question is why Everytime Anita ticks it's as if what she says it's very on point. Aren't the words you say supposed to be random or it's what's on your mind at the moment?

    • @frogman5312
      @frogman5312 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      tics can drawn from your environment- i tic certain things around certain objects/people because the sight/sound/thought of that can trigger a specific tic. Additionally things like coprolalia will latch onto anything you DON'T want to do or say at that moment and you might tic the one thing you think would be the worst thing to do at the moment. Tics will react to stimulus around you, so this is why sometimes people tic things that are about things going on at the moment. They don't reflect your actual thoughts, though- it's almost completely uncontrollable and the things we say or do don't mean we want to secretly do them. The video goes over this stuff a little bit around the 9 minutes mark. I hope this helps and feel free to ask anything if you have follow-up questions

    • @mistadobalina1093

      @@frogman5312 interesting comment. What if someone on your stream types something that isn't a trigger, but is something that I either do not like or is something I know that the other viewers will back me you up on - do you immediately tic for no reason and insult that person very specifically, and make it so that whilst doing so you ensure the other viewers are entertained and will definitely go after that person for? K mean, it happens a lot for someone who has an uncontrollable syndrome. If you think that she never uses it as a cover for taking out her frustration, well, I have a bridge to sell you, if you have any money left. Now send me money, insult you, then tell you I'm going to spend the money you donated with my boyfriend, laugh, and not apologise. 🤦🏻‍♂️

      Disagree. You can have both the disease/syndrome, and have if as a very convenient cover to, play on people's sympathy, have them throw money at you, and just insult them back. Actually, it's a pretty good business model. Just have to be mildly attractive to maintain the Dino cash flow, then laugh all the way to the bank.

    I have been friends with a girl from my middle school for 3 years. We are sophomores now. Not once has she mentioned anything about tics to me, nor have I ever seen her experience tics. Then, all of a sudden in the spring, at lunch out in the court yard of the school, her head twitches to the left a couple of times. I asked her, knowing fully that they were tics, supposedly, and she told me, "oh, it was just my tics" Not one time during the rest of the school year did she experience any other signs of tics...
    My question is, do you think she was faking it? Perhaps she thought it was cool not knowing how painful it can be? Because before, during, and after she had her head twitching tic thing, she looked relaxed, as if her muscles weren't being strained to form movements she had no control over..

      Hey! So I don’t know what other people think about this situation and although my knowledge of the topic is limited compared to that of people with Tourettes, from personal experience, tics are not necessarily a symptom of that affliction. I myself experienced a brief period of stress-induced psychosomatic tics caused by social and academic anxiety. They would only happen at moments where I felt high stress and I was able to treat it with therapy. I don’t know what your friend’s situation is, they may or may not be faking things, but I just thought I’d mention tics don’t only happen to people with Tourettes, though those of people with Tourettes have a different origin since they’re neurological and not psychological like mine were.

    Everyone picks up words and they get stored in the brain, no matter if they’re offensive or not. People without Tourette’s choose not to use some words… they CHOOSE. Tourette’s doesn’t care and it throws everything out there. I don’t have this disorder but I do get that the brain saves everything we see and hear and if someone has no control over a wiring issue, then we need to stop bashing them for it.

    One of my daughter's tics right now is "I hate black people!" First time she did it she shocked herself and was like "Oh my. What have black people ever done to me?" Which made everyone crack up. You gotta have a sense of humor with this. People are so easily offended these days it's pretty pathetic. Our ancestry is Mi'kmaq and I homeschool my kids so we were learning about the Mi'kmaq Scalp Proclamation of 1749 against our people. So one day she grabs me by the hair and yells SCALP PROCLAMATION! OMG. We laughed so hard. I can't wait until all this whiney SJW crap stops being a trend. It's so last year. Especially because it is usually privileged people who wind up attacking those that aren't. It's gross.

      A tic is not intentional. Its not about her mentality or being racist. Its the opposite. She wouldnt have that as a coprolalic tic if she was hateful.
