Today is CGI, but Tom Savini beats CGI effects with his hard work by his own hands in any way. He forever will be the genius of effects. Another master of horror is George A. Romero, he is a Stan Lee of horror genre. RIP sir.

@@alpharomero88so this got a copyright claim..yes ? I put up the red version and got a claim so took it down again..the best version is the red edition as it's the longest available with lots of new establishing shots and plot progression, pacing is slowed but it's a lot more watchable..the colour correction is much better than this version also. This has always been my favourite horror film since I was about 8yrs old in 80. It played in the TV room at a few of my birthday parties and was always popular, ghoul kids would watch in the front room missing the party games etc and would call kids in for the key scenes , kids would stream in , moan groan cheer and whoop then back outside when the next lull came. Rinse repeat.. years later reading the MPs talking about England's kids parties playing nasties across the country was a huge imputus in the need for a classification process..😂 happy days

This is totally great, I'm a massive romero fan. I have various commentaries on the different versions of dawn of the dead i own, but i don't have this one. I have one with george, tom, and chris but it also has perry martin as the narrator. This is great to hear a different one after all these years. I'm a huge movie dork but this has to be my favorite movie everi watch it a couple times a month and i have been doing that for the last 35 or so years. I was born in 1977 and have loved this show since i first seen it with my older brother as a little kid. As much as i love all different types of movies, this one never gets old. So thanks very much for the killer upload i plan on listening to this many mote times.

IF you're interested in the history: So glad to finally see various versions of this come to light, but there is no 'definitive' version -- unless you consider Romero's US cut to be the 'director's edition.' He cut this first for Cannes film festival , and this is longer and done quicker (real trolls will recognize the scene with the cops getting on the boat scene was shorter in the US cut). HOWEVER, Dario Argento's cut was missing a lot of stuff Romero left in, but there are some juicy gore shots that Romero cut out. The basement scene had more in it, as well as other scenes. So someone on utube has edited together all three versions into a mega 'extended' version that runs almost three hours. It's brilliant -- look for it. You'll notice the Argento cut shots are very crisp and clear, as if the final US version was 'mastered' into a certain dimmer lighting. Also ironically, Argento left a little exposition that clears up minor points of the story. Look for this 'extended cut' as it has a lot more Goblin as well. My feeling is that Romero was hyper-conscious of running time, and was really trying to keep it short as possible, for obvious reasons. What a masterpiece.

    • @ShakaCthulu
      @ShakaCthulu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I believe you’re referring to the “Extended Mall Hours” fan edit. That is on TH-cam, but there’s a better version also on TH-cam called the "Complete Cut", which is pretty much the Extended Mall Hours edit with some slight improvements like better resolution & smoother music edits. It comes from a rare blu-ray boxset put out bt Austrian distributor XT Video, runs about 155m and is upscaled to 1080p. Looks really crisp, check that one out.

"The Gonk" would be used on the Cartoon Network stop motion 80's nostalgic TV series, "Robot Chicken" only it's chickens bawking the theme music at the end of each episode. Actor Marty Schiff, would play the character Hern Burford on the Nickelodeon kids show "Out Of Control" alongside actor comedian Dave Coulier in 1984.

I just wish that he wasn't such a dick to meet in-person. I was really excited to meet him at a con several years ago, and it completely changed my opinion on the guy. Very stand-offish, and no exaggeration, literally the only thing that he said to me the entire time was "15 bucks". He couldn't even be bothered to look at me, or fake a smile for the picture.
I could almost understand if there had been some huge crowd or something, but I was the only guy there. Ok, if that's the issue, I'm sorry you're having a slow day, but don't take it out on me. I've had this discussion with other people online, and I guess that's just the way that he is. He doesn't really have the time of day for you if you're not a filmmaker. There's even an interview he did with James Rolfe (Angry Video Game Nerd) where he's kind of a dick to him.

1:03:05 I actually have the answer to Christine's question lol. I was front and center for the Richard France panel at the Monroeville Mall Living Dead Weekend in 2023. Richard told the story about how he was on set about to shoot the part and he said to George that he looks too similar to his scientist character in The Crazies and some viewers might mistake him as playing the same character. So apparently George called over to one of the prop people and was like "Hey, do we have an eye patch or something here?" and then somebody came back with an eye patch and gave it to George and he gave it to Richard and said "Now you look like someone else!"

In Argento's cut, when the SWAT and soldiers knock in the barricaded door, there is an added moment where the cops/soldiers try to see what's in the room before all the hands reach through the boards and tear down the barricade. I don't know if it's the best film ever, I'm not even into horror movies that much, but I remember watching this late night on TV as a young teenager in the early 90s and the film just crawled up my spine and into my brain. I think the thing that freaked me out the most was the opening where it's this mish-mash chaos, with people slinking away out of the studio as confused people argue and the city begins to fall. It was the first time I'd seen horror done this way, in an almost documentary fashion, and the way the music keeps fading in and out... wow. I was just utterly mesmerised. It set a tone and everything after just felt bizarrely nightmarishly real. The film lived rent-free in my head for a long time through my teens.

Tom says “the techniques (for the special effects) we used were so primitive” but I think that’s the charm of the movie. So much inventive, innovative ideas, creativity and just amateur filmmaking is so unique and special compared to most movies now with big budget special effects and CGI. The film doesn’t seem corporate, it seems very intimate and like a community was behind it, a community of friends, family and good people, as opposed to big Hollywood big wigs.

I disagree with George the scenes of them enjoying the mall & arcade games is too long. I love it. I want more. I feel like we needed to see them enjoy the Mall & all its pleasures. Cause thats what viewers imagine life would be like stuck in a mall with full run of the place. Plus we want to see Roger having fun in his last couple of days alive. I also dont care that the zombies change color under different lights. Also I want my horror blood to be RED. Thats what we imagine blood to be like & we dont care about realism. Brown blood is not great for horror fantasies. I feel they obsess over these technical things that viewers dont really notice unless theyre really anal. It should be a bit cartoonish. Most of the great horror classics are low budget. Its the heart(and art), passion & energy we love. And the characters. This film has awesome characters we root for.

Best freaking zombie movie ever made ! Made with love, made with real work. Today's Hollywood and filmmaking all over the world should be ashamed. It went down the drain. This Christmas I'm playing a Doom II wad based on this movie, following the story. It's hilarious, it is called Doom Zombies Re-Animated.

Watching the chaos & carnage in the mall Im thinking who the hell cleaned it all up before the mall opened the next morining? cause it all seems to be filmed on site. Like they said, they would never get permission to do this now. Malls were relatively new back then. Not as bogged down in legistics & insurance.

Interesting. I was waiting to hear what Tom would say about 'The Chocolate Man' line and for a second or two, I thought he was going to talk over it but not Tom Savini!!
    He's a Cool Ass M.Fer
And anyone cool enough to have a Cod Piece Gun, would not be concerned about offending people.
He was a Vietnam photographer and Lucky
to not be the type who goes into shell shock, when they returned.
I'd Love to see a Documentary about him.
Anyway, he said Ken Foree didn't like it, which is surprising. He's Joe Grizzly!! Bitch!! lol
and the use a shot early on, where the SWAT guys are waiting for the gang
to jump out. Maybe it was a pick up shot, 2nd unit.
