  • In this video, I will teach you how to renew your Mexican temporary residency visa. As I made this video I renewed my own visa, so that’s how you know that the information in the video is up-to-date and should work for you, because it worked for me. If this video seems long, it is. And that’s because I literally walk step-by-step through the entire process from start to finish, explaining every form, what it means, how to fill them out correctly, everything you should bring with you, and what to expect at the immigration office, so you can successfully renew your visa without the help of a lawyer. This video is super thorough. So let’s get right into it.

Wish I had found this video prior to completing the visa renewal process this week. I renewed my visa in Morelia, Mich., this week. No appointment was required, I simply walked into the office, and only a few minutes wait both days I was there. I can confirm photos and fingerprinting are done at the INM office. I was also able to pay by credit card while at the INM office which makes it more convenient than doing the bank payment procedure. They did inform me, the 1st day I was there, I needed to complete a change of address on the Government site before the new temporary resident visa could be completed; I had moved 6-months after the temporary was issued. There was no charge to complete my change of address, and the form was available to be printed out immediately from home and brought to INM the following day. I received my new visa the same day after spending approximately 3 hours in office, and about 1 hour the day prior. I believe it was expedited as I arrived about 3 hours before they were closing and the employee was being helpful in trying to complete the process that day. They were very kind and patient with me due to my limited spanish ability and I am most grateful for the exceptional service I received in Morelia. Thank you for your video.

Hi Meredith. My Mexico Visa is renewed!
Your advice here was very helpful. I would amend it with the following:
To get an I.N.M. appointment I was told to arrive at 6:00am or earlier on a weekday (Mon. - Fri.) and wait in line. I arrived at 5:30am, waited in a long line, showed someone I had all of my paperwork, and got an appointment for 2 days later. I waited from roughly 5:30am to 8:30am! I'm glad I brought food & things to work on in line.
I came back 2 days later shortly before my appointment at 10:30am. I showed someone my paperwork, then did 'musical chairs' waiting to have my paperwork looked at.
Inside the I.N.M. office cell phone use is prohibited, one cannot wear glasses or hats, and a mouth covering / mask must be worn. Remember to bring a snack, water, book, notebook, sudoku, etc.
My paperwork included: the original & copy of my 'pago de derecho,'
my orig. passport & its color copy,
my orig. MX visa & its color copy (both sides of the card on one side of one piece of paper),
the form stating the nature of my stay has not changed ( 3:10 / 9:30 ),
and of course the 'tramite de solicitud' form (3 pages).
Sign all paperwork so your signature looks similar to the signature on your passport / visa.
Also, I left copies of paperwork at home and pdfs saved on my laptop & flash drive 'just in case.'
I was asked why I wanted to continue to live in Mexico / renew my Visa which I had a short answer ready to say. I got the attendant laughing. Nice woman. She worked / looked over my papers for 10+ minutes then I was handed a form to sign and was told to go upstairs. They keep your old visa card.
I went upstairs, presented my form, and waited (about 45 min.). My name was called, I made small talk with the man. He asked me questions about my religion, height, weight, work, .... information asked on the 'formatio basico.' Then he took my photos and fingerprints. I waited 5 minutes and then received my new Visa card!
Promptly, I left & took photos of both sides of my Visa card with my cell phone, emailed the photos to myself, and made a color copy of the card at the print shop outside the I.N.M office (imagine how much it would suck to lose that card right after you got it and not have some 'backup').

Thank you so much for this! I'm going to renew this week and it's super helpful. I've read online though that you can pay the fees at the INM office, do you know if that's true? If so, do you still need the form for payment?

@@benjaminobrien429 Hi. I paid at a nearby bank. I believe one can pay the 'pago de derecho' at an I.N.M. office. The bank will only accept this payment in cash. Also, once you pay they will hand you a receipt. Quadruple check that all the information on this receipt is correct (the amount paid, the correct spelling of your first and last name(s), your CURP, etc.). I.N.M. will Not accept this receipt if there are any mistakes and then you'd likely have to solicit the bank or the government for a refund of your money.

Thank you so much Meredith! This was a very helpful video as this enabled me to save hundreds on a facilitator. If you are renewing in CDMX, her timeline is very accurate as to the experience in INM. Only advice I didn't take was to come later just because things are so unpredictable day to day. I came at 5:30a to ensure getting everything done in 1 day and I have no regrets about that. Also when you come back for your appt, there's like 3-4 different lines with nothing and no one to tell you what they are for so for the CDMX location go to the line/door on the west side of the building on Platón to hear your name called.

Glad it's useful for you! Make sure to like and share if you think it could help someone else.
So legally we are required to update our address with INM any time we move. Many people don't do this, because there's no way for them to "catch" you unless you tell on yourself. With that said, you should do what seems best to you. If you feel better knowing INM has your current address, update it (BUT change the move date so that you are within 90 days and don't pay a fine). If it's complicated, just renew using your old address without updating. To be honest, if I were in your shoes, I would do the latter in order to avoid completing nearly double the amount of paperwork.
If you decide you update your address: You CAN do visa renewal and address change on the same day at INM. At least in CDMX. I see many people on expat groups saying you can't, but I literally had a higher up at INM in CDMX tell me that you can do both on the same day.

Hi there, so I just successfully renewed my first-year temporary resident visa for a three-year period, with big thanks to your video! A couple notes I figured I'd share as an update for February 2023 (CDMX INM office in Polanco):
      * Documents in hand, I arrived at the INM at 7:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, with the line already a good block deep. I shuffled along/waited until about 11:30 a.m. to finally reach a table set up outside where a staffer gave me an appointment for the next day, at 12pm. They cut off the line about 30 or so people after me, so I'm very glad I arrived when I did. If I had arrived a short while after I did, I would've been turned away for the day 😅. If I were advising a friend who is just about to do this same process, I'd say shoot to arrive at the INM 6:30-7:00am at the latest just to be safe!
      * Day of the appointment took about 6.5 hours from arriving for my 12pm appointment to finally getting done with biometrics (took about 4 hours in the waiting room for that). I got chided for filling out/signing my documents in black ink -- they need blue ink only. Luckily they let me re-sign where needed in blue ink there at the window.
      * It's no longer required to make a pre-payment at a bank and bring that comprobante as part of the document packet. Instead, you can now just pay via debit or credit card at the time of your appointment!
      * I had two piezas at once -- extend my residencia temporal for 3 years + change my address. They took care of both of them, no problem. My residency is through economic solvency; they didn't end up asking for any bank statements. And they didn't require any form of proof of domicile, neither for the change of address pieza nor the extension of the visa pieza!
Thank you so much again for the detail in your video; it gave me a lot more confidence going into this process!

@@reocam8918 I can't speak from experience, but I believe once you get permanent residency, you'll have to pay taxes in Mexico. I don't know how it works, I don't know anything about taxes in Mexico - maybe there are exclusions or exceptions or something, idk.
I plan to get permanent residency. In order to avoid being double taxed in both countries, look into the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion on the IRS website.
In order to stay with temporary residency and never change to permanent, that would mean leaving the country every 4 years and going through the immigration process all over again from the start - going to a Mexican consulate outside of Mexico, presenting all the documents to show you qualify, interview, receiving the visa to enter the country, and coming to Mexico and doing the canje process all over again. Plus, every year they change the requirements to get temp residency; imagine you leave the country to start the temp residency process all over again and the rules have changed and you get denied! That'd be terrible. Even if it works, that is a lot of work every 4 years. I'll be here for a long time, so I want permanent residency.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll see what happens when I go there in late Febr. with that form as it is. I'm thinking resubmitting that form is not possible &/or would mess up the process. I won't submit & pay for the 'pago de derecho' until the 30th day or anything else that shows a date on a form.

@@j.m.9002 Good luck! It would be nice if you come back here and update me on what happens so that other people can see your comment and I can have a more clear answer if anyone else asks me the same question. I had the same question myself but doubted, so I decided to wait

Mine is via marriage. Did you have to present the marriage certificate again?

I would recommend you to bring it with you. As I mention in the video, part of the paperwork is basically reaffirming that the situation through which you got residency hasn't changed. Like with financial solvency, in some immigration offices they might ask for your bank statements, and sometimes not. So it's good to have your marriage certificate with you (and a copy), because it's very possible they will ask for it.

I'm not sure where you got that letter -- stating your address hasn't changed

Are you referring to the letter I mention at 09:03 ? The letter stating that conditions of your residency haven’t changed? There isn't one saying your address hasn't changed.

Look at the video around the 3:10 mark. She shows a highlighted link that goes to the letter. I missed it also ;)
