Wow, what an awesome life. I started watching you build the RV12 and could not stop even if it was a couple of years ago. I wish you a happy 2024. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Paul, I Just got done binge watching your videos on the RV build. I was riveted (no pun intended) I'm 62 and have just begun my aviation journey with a discovery flight in an RV 12. I have loved and studied aviation my whole life. Don't know why I didn't start in my 20's? I've been watching every video I can find on flying the RV---glad I stumbled on your build series---great production. Well done sir.
Very much enjoyed all your RV-12 videos! You REALLY had a lot of logistical challenges in this one to get you and your stuff all ferried across country. Hope you didn't forget the dog or something!
This video is the icing on the cake for me. Today I signed a contract buying a building lot at Hensley Airpark. A few years before I move there and build a home however. I'm going to have to look into these RV airplanes. I hear there are a bunch at Hensley so there must be something good about them. Looking forward to meeting you and your wife Paul.
Eastern Tennessee is a quality area. I've been wanting to move out there for years. Beautiful country, great roads, and good weather most of the year. Congrats, Paul
@@paulastraub I've watched your videos countless times over the last year. I even got to visit the Vans factory last Summer and fly an RV12! I'm starting my airplane soon, I'm building a plans built Thatcher airplane. Thank you for the inspiration!
Greeting from CAH3! Your move looks like it will work out for you. Great neighbourhood, great state, and an awesome hangar! Now you can make some more flying videos of the eastern countryside.
I just finished watching all of your videos straight through. I found them while doing some research on Vans aircraft as I consider building. I immediately smiled when I heard the first part of your story. While you are a much more accomplished pilot than I am, I too started flying young. I soloed a glider at 14 and accrued a few hundred hours and my pilots's license (Gliders) by 16. I owned a glider before my first car. I also accrued about 50 hours in powered aircraft but never got to finish my power ticket. Now, 30 years later life has come full circle and I'm able to pick back up with aviation - that I never lost my love for. Also, worth mentioning, some of my best memories were our club's summer glider camps in Sequachee Valley Tennessee (just north of Signal Mountain) where I learned to fly the ridges. Its absolutely beautiful county and I look forward to getting to see it again one day soon from the air. Thank you for the inspiration! I really enjoyed your story!
Paul, you have a talent for making beautiful and interesting videos. I've become a fan of your work. I hope you will sometime do a video of your local flying adventures in your new home area. Now for the big question, has that new three bladed prop worked out well for you? Does it really give you a bit more climb performance without a sacrifice in cruise? I may take that path as well.
Thanks very much Bruce. I only have about 3 hours on the new 3-blade....but from my early testing, I am getting about 50 - 100 FPM more climb, and cruise is about the same. Also, I like the sound of the 3-blade better, and it is definitely smoother, no vibration at all and I have not had it balanced. I did get all 3 blades pitched exactly the same. Lastly, my approaches and landings have been much easier to manage. This prop has a little more drag at low RPM and it seems to work very well for the RV-12 on descent and landing. All the best, Paul
Great story Paul! The narrative reminds me of Dances With Wolves. It is great to see someone who is "making it happen". Enjoy east Tennessee. I'm glad you escaped.
Hearty congratulations Paul and family on living your values. We are so programmed to believe that our home is an investment or at least an asset and we always need to sell it for more dollars than we paid for it. Here Paul and his family are being paid for the beauty of the surrounding area in peaceful and grateful appreciation. Paid in less costs associated with his dream lifestyle and being paid for an ongoing sense of a like minded folk community. Put a price on having control over these many aspects of everyday living. And in the future who knows, his family at some point may just want to become part of that ongoing, older, community of aviation affectionados, or not. Doesn't matter. Paul and his wife do and that's what's important. Well done in my book. And yes, I am a little envious. The harmony of the carolers, beautiful. Blue skies!

Hi Aerojet, thanks for the very nice words. I don't know your situation but I would encourage you to not give up if you really want to build one. There are people out there looking for a partner, or other options. I know you can do it if you put your mind to it. All the very best to you.....Paul

Love your videos, have watched them w great interest! you are truly an inspiration Paul ! and I agree, CA just on a wrong path, glad you got to TN, hear great things there
Wow! That does show how much more value you get in some places. Very interesting to see the whole process. A similar sized property where we live in the Channel Islands would cost $20 Million Dollars! A One bedroom apartment here, would cost more than your property in GALT! Fly safe!
Wow!! If money were no object, I would live on the Monterey/Carmel California coast. Pebble Beach is like Heaven to me. Channel Islands seem amazing!! Thanks very much for watching. All the best, Paul
Thank you for your story, I am an aircraft enthusiast from Puerto Rico specially the RV12, but sadly im bankrupt. Hope in a future to live an airpark too.
I just finished watching your great build video. I thought I would jump ahead and see how you had painted the plane. I landed on this video and was surprised and delighted to see that you had relocated to Tennessee. Welcome! I live in Knoxville myself. We retired here five years ago from Pennsylvania. Isn't Eastern Tennessee beautiful? I hope you enjoy it here as much as we do. By the way, the plane looks beautiful. I have become a subscriber and look forward to future adventures.
Thanks so much for your very kind comments Bob....and thanks for the warm welcome to TN, we really love it here. Very happy to know we are neighbors. All the best, Paul
I’m originally from Tennessee living in Georgia now. There’s no place on earth like Big Orange Country!! Just wait until UT football is back to what it has traditionally been... The past 15 years have been awful but I have a feeling the Vols will be back soon!
You do a very good job telling stories. I’m from Banner Elk NC, not too far from you! If you get a chance head up to Banner Elk, Boone, Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, Beech Mountain. I work up there in the summers at a Summer Theatre called Lees McRae Summer Theatre as their lighting designer (except for this summer). Come visit us in 2021!
Hi Todd, thanks so much for your warm comments! I know exactly where you are. I have good friends that live in Raleigh and I have driven to see them a few times. My route is through Erwin TN, then directly over the mountains through Banner Elk and Boone. My wife and I are theatre fans and would love to see a show up there, such a great setting. Of course we know it won't be till next year, but we will definitely look you up! All the best, Paul
Hi Paul! I'm a huge fan of your videos. I learn something new, and I'm entertained the whole time. I just passed my private pilot check ride last month, and I'm figuring out what's next. Instrument rating, or build an airplane! I'm thinking about an RV-10 for longer cross countries, and 4 seats as I'm getting married this year and hope to start a family. However I'm also considering aerobatics, and RV-10 is not aerobatic. I'd like to politely ask what you do for a day job? I'm an engineer in the automotive industry, and I find it interesting: the differences and similarities between cars and planes.
Hi Tom, thanks for the nice comments. If I were to build again, I would do the RV-14A (nosewheel version). I love the RV-10 but it will probably cost about $250K by the time you install a nice IFR panel. It also burns a lot of fuel and you will find that you rarely use the rear seats. It is fun to have a 4-seater if you have kids or want to take another couple flying. You may find it makes more sense to rent a 4-seater once in a while, when really needed. The RV-14 is fast, fully aerobatic, and a great cross-country and Instrument flying airplane. I worked for IBM for 40 years as a mainframe and network specialist. I retired in 2021 and am enjoying living on an airpark. All the best! Paul
Sir, its so good that you are in and have your dream house but i think you must be missing company of your friends Gary and Rick. Well congrats to you for new house in other state of your country ,i am an aviation enthusiast and to satisfy my love for flying i fly remote controlled aeromodel and one of my model is Great Planes RV-4 tail drager
Thanks Tom, my wife fell in love with it when we first looked at the house. We had it professionally trimmed after we moved in and put in a new, 2-seat tree swing that we get to enjoy once in awhile. All the best, Paul
Paul Straub from what I can see of it I would think that it was always in a field, and not a forrest. Farmers would leave trees in fields for various reasons , sometimes as markers. It’s limbs have grow out beautifully. You can get it registered which will increase the value. My friend had a 250 year old oak tree destroyed by lightning and the insurance company was very generous in compensating him for it. I value trees more the older I get.
Hi Paul...I really enjoy your videos...watched them all, several times. Now that you've been at Hensley Airpark a while, are you still happy with your move there? Things you might have done differently? Does the Nilichucky River ever become a problem in flood times? Are most of the planes at the airpark homebuilt or store bought? Any advice on airparks in general? I've looked at "Living with your Plane" web site but fine it difficult to use. Thanks for any suggestions.
Thanks for the comments Jeff....yes, after almost 2 years here at Hensley, I love it and would not consider moving. Can't think of anything specific I would do differently! The Nolichucky has never caused any problems that I know of, and I have been very happy with the average year-round weather in this part of TN. We have about a 50/50 mix here of Experimental/Production airplanes. I do love the airpark lifestyle, although it's a little more effort to take care of my 1.5 acres vs the typical .2-.3 acres I have owned in the past! All the best, Paul
Absolutely loved this video. My wife and I are in such a similar place, only a few years behind you. I live in Citrus Heights CA. Got my private a year ago, and I did some training at none other than Cameron Park! (My flight school was in auburn) I have drooled over airparks for years. And what airplane kit am I talking my wife into letting buy? I want to build an RV-12! We can’t handle the taxes here anymore. Our house is very expensive. Property tax...horrible politics etc...... be it known that I will not finish the airplane until we are out of here. They can stuff that “usage tax” right where.............. my daughter turns 18 in a few years and we are out f here!
Fantastic Robert, your future is sounding bright!! We have been gone now just over a year....I am actually in Lodi this week, moving my in-laws about 15 minutes from our home in Hensley Airpark. All the best, you will never look back!! Paul
I'm in CH also! Tennesse is a dream location. The Smokey mt. are stunning. its actually not far from the ocean either, especially if you own a plane. Dividened tax goes to 0 Jan. 1st. so it will be even cheaper to live there.
I been wanting to move to Tennesse every since I visited there last summer. Living on an airpark there is the ultimate dream! Any vacant lots? Your dividend tax goes to 0 Jan. 1st. one more tax break for you.
Hi, thanks for the comments! Yes, there are still lots available at Hensley Airpark. I think the developer sold most of them, but there are a couple that are available for resale (people that were never able to move or had health issues). You would love it here, great people and a passion for aviation. All the best, Paul
I have a friend that does aerial photography. He mounted a camera on the belly of his RV-6 airplane. I was flying at about 2000' above the ground. He was about 1000' above me and just started taking some photos when I was directly underneath him. We were flying over the central California wine country. Thanks, Paul

You escaped Cali..............good.
Thanks Jason, it's been just over a year and we have zero regrets!!
Thanks for sharing!!
You are very welcome Jon, thank you for watching!! Take care, Paul
9:24 how did you take this picture?
I have a friend that does aerial photography. He mounted a camera on the belly of his RV-6 airplane. I was flying at about 2000' above the ground. He was about 1000' above me and just started taking some photos when I was directly underneath him. We were flying over the central California wine country. Thanks, Paul
@@paulastraub Thanks for the response! That's very interesting. By the way, I just wanted to say that I love your style of making videos. Keep it up! :D
have a nice day. max speed. 275-300 mph. range 2000 mph. Two-seater plane for $200,000. A 4-seater plane for $300,000. Can I have it done to you or others? please provide information. thanks.
