Your build documentary is so well put together and narrated, this is the cherry on top! Paint came out stunning, what a beautiful story and plane. Thank you for sharing your amazing journey.
After seeing your Porsche 911 yesterday in Brevard, NC, watching your video on building the RV-12 explained a lot to me about the quality and condition of your 27 year old 911. Both the plane and car are extremely impressive! Thanks for forwarding this video!
I think I've watched this video 3 or more times, yet- I'm always soooo friggin' happy when I watch it. I love the fact that you never lose sight of the process and who's in control. Waiting to seal the rear window until after paint along with interior just makes perfect sense. Getting the right firm to paint your baby? Priceless. Very glad that you waited for the 2nd panel and wheel pants, again, just makes good common sense. Heck, I'm proud of all your effort, work, planning and execution and I don't even know you!!
Paul, in addition to being a successful builder you are a great producer. This clip allows us to get the benefits of your experience and your story will no doubt bring more builders at Synergy to get a perfect paint job. I cannot wait to see your RV-12 in Raleigh as you promised!
Thanks for the nice words JP. I am excited for the flight to Raleigh, but it will probably have to be 2019, in the Springtime. I have committed to fly to Oshkosh next month, they want to display my plane at the Synergy booth, and it was a dream of mine to fly there someday. That will be about 30 hours in the RV-12 (round trip) from California. Definitely still want my trip to NC and Kitty Hawk/FFA!! Paul
Hi Paul, this painting of your RV 12 video nicely compliments your build video. I’ve considered a Van’s kit and thank you for your generosity allowing many of us out there to gain insight into the nuts and bolts of a project such as yours. Beautiful aircraft. Well done sir. Don
Hello RV-12 .. I have enjoyed all of the stories about you your friends , family . The one thing that i keep thanking about is you can build and assemble airplane and do a fantastic job at it , very very nice job ... I'm ask you ... With all of your abilities , knowledge , I would thank you could had panted your on RV12 ... With all the time you spent on going there .. money .. You could had learn hail to pant your on airplane ... I did at the age of 16 .. I just know you could have done it .. Thank you Andy
I would be all over one of these if the fuel tanks were in the wings. I've heard Van's has come up with a "polycarbonate type" tank, but I still do not want the fuel right behind me in the cockpit. You have built yourself a beautiful airplane, Belated Congrats, and safe flying!!
I agree, wing tanks would be nice! Van's original design for the 12 included wings that could be safely removed/installed in 15 minutes, to allow easy trailering/storage. Having wing tanks would mean constantly disturbing the fuel connections, so they put the tank in the fuselage. As it played out (from my observations) very few RV-12 owners ever remove their wings (I only remove mine for my condition inspection once a year). I would prefer wing tanks, giving me more baggage space and a little more separation between the occupants and 20 gal of fuel! Thanks for the comments. All the best, Paul
@@paulastraub Yes, that was my exact though about the wings. I really have heard/seen no one removing their wings except at annual/ condition inspection time. All I have seen are hangared at a airport or private strip. Tailwinds!!
Paul, the paint job looks fabulous. I really like the graphics including the Van’s aircraft silhouette in the number twelve! It’s so nice when you can undertake a venture and find yourself able to involve competent people.
Paul Straub well you have a very good eye for graphics! I’m also noting point of importance for my build. For example - ‘Do not seal in the rear cockpit window prior to painting’. I am enjoying learning of the collaborations you have experienced with other professionals along the way. I have had similar experiences when following 500cc GP bike racing across the globe as a young lad. Then more recently with restoration of classic cars. I’m so pleased to see the aviation folks are of a similar bread. Frankly I don’t think one can find better people to associate with than Americans and Australians. We’re very lucky.
Paul, congratulations on two wonderful videos about a beautiful airplane. I was sorry to hear about your heart surgery, but great you were able to keep your license and pursue this great adventure. Congratulations on a great wife that helped you see your dream become a reality. Happy landings.
Thanks Ed, glad you enjoyed it. What I love about the RV-12 is that the first kit (empennage/tailcone) is only $2700. Then the wings and fuselage are about $6K each. So you can have a couple years of building and have most of the airframe complete for about $15K. That is what motivated me to start an RV-12 build. All the best to you...Paul
Great video, Paul! Thanks for sharing, I'm thrilled you followed up your first video with the latest developments. I've watched your first video 4 or 5 times now, and thanks in part to the excitement it generated in me, I bought my RV-12 empennage kit from Van's 2 weeks ago and am about to start building. I'm sure I'll continue to refer to your videos as I progress in the build. THANK YOU!!
Incredibly well presented and affirming to the painting team. I like your “no-“drama presentation of the journey through the build and beyond. I know you spent many many hours on the dialogue throughout the documentary. Well done. I am happy for your success and continued safe flight.
Very informative. I've always wanted to hear who stratified aviators were (or were not) with Synergy Air; you answered that question. Great airplane. Beautifully constructed. Gorgeous paint job. Congratulations.
Ah, finished at last and it looks wonderful. Redbluff airport also has the best guilty pleasure breakfast I can recall. Weed used to have its name in huge letters right on the runway....I'd joke that it was an advertisement. And I went to Columbia annually for many years. They host many type club fly-ins there, including those for Luscombes and Bellancas. The incentive to get there early is to be able to use the perpendicular grass runway which becomes the display area for aircraft after the fly-in begins. And, yes, the Pacific NW is the most gorgeous part of the lower 48 IMO.
Thanks for taking time to share your build with us. What an outstanding job you did with this aircraft. If you can keep us updated in the future that would be great. Enjoy.
Hello Paul. There is another video you could do. This is one is related to your medical. There are little or no videos by pilots describing their efforts to get a medical when they have some medical issues. I have not flown in 48 years and have had prior medical certificates. I have a few medical issues but am well but never thought of the complications of a new certification. I can’t do basic med as the requirements are outside my prior certification. Much regards to you, your work and the graciousness of sharing your venture and story telling.
Hi Glen, I don't remember what I covered in the video. I was away from flying for 23 years (1993 - 2016). I had open heart surgery in Dec, 2014 (quintuple bypass). When I recovered, I decided it was time to get current. I had to go through the 3rd Class Medical 'Special Issue' process which took about a year. The FAA issued my new 3rd class medical certificate which allowed me to get a BFR and current again. I was not going to start building my RV-12 until I knew I would be legal to fly it. Once you have a Special Issue medical cert, you are then allowed to transition to Basic Med. I have been flying under Basic Med the last 4 years, it's great. So, don't give up if your really want to fly again!! All the best to you! Paul
As I watched the first video and I saw the condition of your garage, it gave me an indication of the quality of the build that I would see. And I was not disappointed. Very meticulous in every detail.Except when you had to buff the tank for the Proseal, I did not see even a scratch. First class work. It couldn't have been done better at a professional shop. There was that one shot where you were sitting in the half built plane, probably making aeroplane noises, but I can imagine that there was more than that one time this happened. Well, now that it is finally complete, it is time to get out an explore the country. There are many airports out there with pilots and ground staff just waiting to congratulate you on the plane. Well Done!
Wow, what a close to an awesome adventure. So glad you did the 'heavy lifting' regarding working with Synergy- clearly the right choice for you and your paint. Great job, beautiful plane- and, clearly, it is providing you with the pleasure that originally dreamed of. Very inspiring for those of us who struggle with the commitment (and ADHD) of the work, the planning, the time, space, etc & so forth. Love the wheel pants, and, the paint job and colors are incredible. Great video- thanks for all of the effort.
Great videos, and a beautiful airplane! I loved watching all your videos and to see the final product is amazing. I'm seriously considering an RV 14 A build, and you truly inspired me. Thank you and keep us all updated on the places you take that beautiful aircraft.
Wow, I stumbled into your video and what a fantastic story! I'm just getting back into aviation after many years away (License at 19, fly a lot...then come the 30's, buy a house...flying pause)...now I'm shaking the rust off, active with the local aero club and inspired by videos like this. Tip of the hat to you, sir!
Another great video to watch and a brilliant ending to this build. Well done. I enjoyed every second of both this one and your first one.. Thanks for posting them. Best wishes from Yorkshire, UK. ..
hi Paul, it is great to see that the things you start will be done to a 100%. At least. very nice airplane ! thanks for giving us insights into this amazing project.
Hey man, these videos are exactly what i needed to see. Thanks for the details! an RV is out of my budget but the construction parts of this along with your explanation, will suit my needs!
thank you for sharing your experience. i due to life and investing my monies in others along the way (and i`m not sorry i did) life caught me now am unable to and haven`t any to spend on me, so your experience put`s a big smile on my face in how you give so much credit to every one who helped you especially your wife and family! thanks again. c.s.
It is a beautiful plane. You did a great job. Very inspiring. To me this project is so huge and almost unachievable for me. maybe someday I will build the courage and have the time to do something like this. Thanks for posting this
Paul, Thanks for the narration of your experience with Synergy. Very timely as Ryan most likely has our RV-12 on the Synergy trailer on the way to Eugene. A recently ex partner ran our RV-12 off the runway at Westport WA a week ago today. My other partner and I no longer have any concerns about the quality of paint for our aircraft. Your airplane is awesome.
WOW! I never knew the taxes in California were so.....bad! My parents escaped from Communist Hungary in 1956, and they would tell stories of how a tax assessor would show up at your home without notice. Then you would get a massive tax bill for a "luxury tax". The tax was if you had any type of painting or art on the walls of your home. If you owned any jeweler other than a wedding band, you were hit with a property tax as well! Don't tell any politician in California about this, as it may give them ideas of a new tax. My condolences for your tax pains, but congratulations on a beautiful RV-12. It truly does rival the finest factory build out there.
You sounded like a proud dad. Your plane is gorgeous. What a labor of love and an understanding family! You're blessed.
Thanks for the nice comments, and thanks for watching! Cheers, Paul
Your build documentary is so well put together and narrated, this is the cherry on top! Paint came out stunning, what a beautiful story and plane. Thank you for sharing your amazing journey.

a trick: watch series at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Jagger Ishaan yea, been using flixzone for since november myself :D

Thanks Ken....I was really happy, the painter did an amazing job. I made a design and picked the colors, and he took it from there!!

Paul Straub thank you too. Hope to see other videos of your plane.
Well done.....From Australia.
Thank you!
Thanks for the great comments Peter! All the best, Paul
