      Hi Tim, thanks for watching and best of luck on your build. I went back and forth between the 10 and 12 also, but really glad I built the 12. For my missions, it was a lot less of a financial risk and it's really fun to fly! Thanks again, Paul

    oh yea! what a great video I'm an ex airline pilot and corporate pilot (CE-650, BE-3100, type rated), flew king airs, etc for private companies back in the day....... I exited the industry after 9-11 for a career in software development. NO regrets on the exit. THIS is a DREAM build and life experience for me for my retirement. thank you for your summary. I WILL build and enjoy one of these in my lifetime so long as life permits.

      That's great, I am really glad you enjoyed it. I was a 22 year-old CFII back in 1981, looking forward to an airline career. Then the PATCO strike hit and turned the entire flying world on its head. Within a couple months, I gave up on flying and interviewed with IBM for a Field Engineer position in their mainframe division. I just retired from IBM after 40 years and had a wonderful career. Just like you, no regrets!! I wish you all the best on your build, you will love it!! Cheers, Paul

      It should not have to be “the good fight.” More clarity on those with medical issues and what they need to do and what to expect. Totally different than the 1960s.

    The Wright Brothers by David McCullough is one of the greatest books. I am an immigrant and naturalized citizen. Reading and feeling that book made an American more than anything else. And just last week, breathing the air in Huffman Fields outside of Dayton gave me the same goose bumps you felt in Kitty Hawk.

    Darn it. Wasn’t planning to watch this whole thing in one sitting but it was too good to stop. And then you had to make me shed a tear at the end. Thinking about starting on a RV-12iS and the TH-cam algorithm wins again.

      Hi Andrew, thanks so much for the very kind words. You will love building the 12iS, I wish it was available when I ordered my first kit. The Rotax iS engine can power a lot more electrical accessories, it's even more efficient on fuel than the ULS, and you never have to deal with carburetors (weighing floats, synching, etc.) Best of luck, Paul

      @paulastraub  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there is always that! The good news is that you can start building a brand new RV-12 for $2775. That gets you the entire first kit, the tail section of the plane (empennage). So for a very small investment, you will know if you like building and when you are finished, you will own the completed tail section of the plane!

About 10 min's into the video it hit me; there is no way in hell that I have the time to build. We are both career folks with three kids 4, 6 and 8. I am just going to have to bite the bullet and buy one that is already built. Thanks for shining a light on the complexity, and reality of it all. My hats off to anyone who has ever built one to completion; its not a reality for me.

    The can-do attitude has become oddly rare, and at times feels as if it's been diagnosed away. I lost my right leg, hip and pelvis at age 16 and the road to becoming a pilot with a love of taildraggers was long, agonizing, and required help from clever folks who modified my Luscombe so I could strap my foot into a harness, close the rudder system, pull for right rudder and push for left. Same for my Bellanca 14-19 triple tail Cruisemaster. And I finally got a SODA from the FAA that was unrestricted. But I never could have accomplished what you did in the video, Paul. Bravo, sir!

    Absolutely super video. I built and fly a RV-6. It was the second RV-6 to fly and first flight was July 14.1989. I am fortunate to live only a few miles from Van's Aircraft and know Dick Vangrunsven and his brother Jerry Vangrunsven. Just today Dec 13, 2017 Jerry Vangrunsven called me and offered to let me fly his RV-12 as I had previously told him I had not had the opportunity to fly in one. I was expecting to go to his house and jump in the passenger seat and go for a ride, he insisted I fly left seat. What a beautiful flying airplane, it took me a few minutes to learn all the fancy instrumentation as my RV-6 has mostly all old school gauges in it. After a couple T&Gs and a full stop and go it felt really natural to fly. I did have to get use to seeing engine RPM in the 5000 RPM range. All in all a really great day in a really great airplane. Thanks for posting a great video.

    Yeah man. Electrical is a huge deal. I am an FAA Commercial Aircraft Mechanic. Just to share, that a Boeing 747 has just over 50 miles of electrical wires running through it. So can you imagine how much weight that adds to an aircraft? Tons. Literally. Great video my friend. I want to do this and your experience is a great tool. I am guessing that I will be able to save some time on the airframe install and fab as that is what I have been doing for over 20 years. Again. Great video mate.

    Enjoyed it, I to got my license in 1972, flew for a few years then stopped, in 1976. I was a great pilot, but didn’t allocate money to continue. In 1995 I went out again and enjoyed aerobatics, and haven’t flown since. I do love flying and aerobatics and have always considered RV3,4 or some other maximum sport experimental plane. I payed for my license by working on Aroncas, Taylorcrafts and Tri Pacers. I know I can build, but now at 68, I think I will be satisfied to fly aerobatics occasionally for fun. I do love following others on TH-cam!

      Hi and thanks for subscribing!! Looks like you might be an airline pilot from the photo. So, I'm sure you know the RV-7 is a great airplane, but if you are a little nervous about the build process, the RV-14 is very similar but the kit and instructions are a lot more refined. I am hoping to build a 14 now that I am retired and moved to an airpark in TN. Either way, you can't go wrong and you will love the build process and the feeling of what you accomplished will never go away. All the best and Merry Christmas. Paul

      @@paulastraub The 14 would be a lot nicer, and the 10 would be a dream! I'm trying to balance my desire to build an RV with the reality of my 3 kids to put through college and a wedding to pay for in the Spring! I think the RV-7 would be "doable". I've seen RV-14's for sale for over $200,000. Not sure why they are so much higher than the -7....they look to be just a little bigger than the 7. I have a partially built kit at my local airport that has been put together by a guy who has made 3 RV's in the past. The quality looks really good. I can get the kit (including finishing kit) right now for $30,000. I still need an engine, prop, avionics, paint job and interior. Decisions, decisions...

    • @paulastraub
      @paulastraub  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@quinnjim Wow, like you said, decisions, decisions.....I would be very tempted to jump on the $30K opportunity. The -14 is such a great plane, I did my last Flight Review in a -14 and I was so impressed. It does everything well if you only need 2 seats and you could finish it at your own pace and watch for the right deal on the engine, avionics, etc. I miss having a great cross-country, IFR platform. The -12 is a great little plane and incredibly inexpensive to own and operate, but it's still a little like a big toy. I wish you the best in your decision and I hope you really enjoy the journey. Just ran across this video by chance. The RV12 is one plane I hope to build/own in the near future. I was fortunate to fly a friends RV12 several times at KSTS. What a dream to fly. The owner let me fly from the left seat for our first flight. I took off and landed with little help from the owner. I’m a current Private Pilot and a part owner in a 1973 Cardinal 177B. The Sonex B is another plane I’m considering. More in my price range. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Blue Sky’s.

    Wonderful story of how life can change. Good for you and you have inspired me to fulfill my dream of getting back into aviation. I to used to be a pilot then I got involved with my first wife and could not afford both. That was 35 plus years ago. I will probably build a Zenith CH750. I guy by the Name of Richard Pearce actually beat the Wright Brothers by a few weeks to be the first to fly. How ever because this occurred in the South Island of New Zealand and because of New Zealand's isolation back in those days, the news of Richard Pearce's accomplishment hit the Northern Hemisphere some time after the Wright Brothers claim to fame. Richard accomplished this all on his own with out the help of anyone else. Thank you for your inspiring video and I will take up the challenge of building my own aircraft.
