Yes, shops are closed on Sunday, but not everything. Restaurants, Cafés, Swimmingpools, cinemas, theatres, Museums all open. All you need to chill on the weekend.
Of course- shops at gas stations and some other shops may be open( some kiosks I believe). I just don’t like when some channels say that everything is closed.
It is not forbidden for all jobs to work on Sundays. If you work in a restaurant or a gas station and other such jobs you work on Sundays and holidays.
My job has a 10 days routine, 7 days work, 3 days of. So my "weekend" can be everyday in the week:). Nice if you visit a zoo, a museum or whatever, it's less crowdy than at the weekend, unfortunatelly events always happen at weekends when I have to work...
Do not forget that the Works Constitution Act and, if applicable, collective agreements also require an increased salary for weekend work, a corresponding time off in lieu (over a period x at least 2 consecutive days off, etc.). This also applies to shift work.
I found the statement from the German-Belgian very appropriate if other people are doing well then you are doing well too. Or if you are friendly and nice to others you will get the friendliness back. I think it is very nice that the shops are closed on Sundays, because then there is little traffic and you have peace and quiet.🙂💙
Way in the past, pretty much everything here in The Netherlands was closed on Sunday, except bars and restaurants. In some parts, this is still true, but in major cities it is now common to find supermarkets open as well as some shops, especially in town centers (though opening hours may differ from the 'regular' ones). The comment from the Belgian guy actually reminded me of the car-free Sundays we used to have here back in the mid 70's because of the oil crisis. It was quite an experience to see a normally busy highway being completely deserted and being able to play tag on it 🙂

Some history about the German speaking Belgians, i'm from the Flemish speaking part of Belgium up north. After the German defeat in WW1 , Belgium took a part of Germany as war compensation. So the people of that region became Belgians against their will. Then WW2 started, and the Germans took back this German speaking region. Many of the young man were enlisted in the Wehrmacht , well because they were..Germans.....many died on the war fronts. Then in 1944 when Belgium was liberated, they took back the German speaking region, so the people were...Belgians again....and they remained so till the present day. I think there are about 80.000 German speaking Belgians, and they have their own parliament and German is now one of our three national languages namely Dutch ( Flemish ) , French and German.
In Italy it is completely normal having cities without cars on the weekends. Only public transport and Taxis are allowed in the city centres on the weekends. It just works🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, but there is a big difference between city centre and the whole city. The latter exists in almost every german and dutch city I've been in (only deliveries for the shops allowed by car and only early morning/evening or no cars at all). But if you wanted to extend it to the whole area that each city has jurisdiction over it would still not work as easily
Up until the 1990s, the opening hours of shops were limited to 6/7 p.m. from Monday to Friday and to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Most people were able to do their shopping in time. Shops were only open until 6 p.m. on Saturdays during the Advent season. Then this clause was relaxed and shops were open once a week (long Thursday) until 8/9 p.m. Now you can find (grocery) shops (depending on the region; town or small town) open until 11 p.m.
And in the big cities there are also super-markets in the train-stations, which are open on sundays. (And you can find kiosks/spätis, which are open 24/7)
Here in Northern Germany in tourist spot it's allowed to open shops on sunday in summer season. In our town shops near to the shore line are open on sunday. And yes working on sunday is not disallowed. In my job I must, have to work regularly on s 13:41 sunday. As shops in our branch (pharmacies) have to be open by law 24/7. One per town has to open minimum.
I actually experienced a (partially) car-free Berlin at the Berlin Marathon. We didn't run along, but walked the course along the edge and that was a unique experience. My weekend as a German is always quiet, takes place at home or in nature and is for relaxation. The fact that stores are closed on Sunday is not a problem at all. We Germans grew up that way and plan our shopping for other days.
My typical German weekend starts at Saturday with the visit of the local farmer's market (which is by the way about 15 times older than me), followed by a lengthy brunch with my family. Since I'm a bit older now, I'll chill afterwards a few hours, maybe do then something in the garden, and only rarely go out in the evening. Sunday is chilling, doing some tidy up, coffee and cake, preparing for the week and cooking the dinner (which is to me a way to relax).
Yep, fyi : Dutch ( 60%) , French 39(%) and German (1%) are official languages in Belgium. Each has its own region, Brussels ( capital) is in theory bilingual French- Dutch....but in reality frenchspeaking, and that's why a lot of foreigners think Belgium is French speaking. Coz they only know Brussels.✌️❤️
They make it sound as if nobody is working on sundays - that is absolutely not so. Apart of McD, other restaurants, gas stations, bakeries and many more, there are a lot of things that work 24/7. Hospitals, police, railroad, airports, all those things we are taking for granted, also have a lot of employees. Of course also these people are getting time off, but not always on the sunday. The "free weekend" only applies to people who work in companies that are working 5 day weeks, or in office jobs and such.
yes, that's what I thought, too. Many people do work on Sundays (and many of them work to make Sundays these typical "chill out" days for others, keep everything going, or to be there for people in case of emergencies - maybe even without being paid because of doing voluntary work). Unlike in rural areas, in Berlin you don't need to "prepare" Sunday. The so-called "Spätis" (1 Späti (sg.) / 3 Spätis (pl.), German "spät" means "late") are open every day and often all night. Here you can buy alcohol as well as things of daily use. And regular supermarkets are open at the major train stations.

Sundays are late breakfast(brunch), a Sunday walk, Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) often together with visiting parents or grandparents, coming home around Abendbrot (dinner) time - and then doing a few things to get ready for Monday morning (looking if you have everything, putting out your clothes, and traditionally the students then exclaim: Mama I need a medieval castle, some Roman costumes and a first edition of Goethes Faust for tomorrow)
In Germany no trucks allowed on the roads from saterday 22.00 Hr till sunday 22.00 hr with some execeptions allowed ( fresh good transports, live stock transport)

Most of this series of videos are excellent, but they are chiefly based in and around Berlin. Berliners are as typical of Germans in general as New Yorkers are of Americans or Londoners are of Brits. In general, many Germans spend many weekends walking or cycling in the countryside, or skiing in winter.

Working on the House, repair some if some needs to repair. Buying special things you need at home. All together way in the early morning. A special word says over here... The early Bild Catches the Worm, means, stand up early to get all done. Playing Guitar, drove with the Motorcycle if the weather is good stop some where for a coffee. So much things left to do, to relax the way you like it
My weekend as a bavarian german: Party, drinking and on sunday sleeping to be able to work on monday. Thats what it is in bavaria (at least in munich and augsburg) at the age between 16 and about 27
my weekend has been very stressful for the last 5 months because we have children. because she can't deal with herself yet, but that's not bad, I'm very proud of her. but mostly my weekend is occupied with time for friends. my wife has no problem with that either, she also has time for herself. since grandma always sleeps with us at the weekend. to take the little ones off us so that we can have some free time. i hope you have a lot of fun in germany when you are in germany...
Kind of weird how that girl apologized for her grandmother dying. Makes it seem like she didn't mean much to her, if her priority is having a good story for a random interviewer and not dissappointing him.
Or maybe she hadn't realized it yet (perhaps you noticed how she said "she (the grandmother) LIVES in..."). Maybe it feels weird or 'shaming' to her being the person now who gets the sympathy of everyone and kind of 'crushes' the good mood of everyone. Maybe it was her first actual loss when she was used to mostly having a good time given her obviously still relatively young age. Maybe it just sucks to experience grief rather than experience a good time. We don't know that and I don't think it's very fair to jump to conclusions such as 'apparently the grandmother didn't mean much to her'. Different people cope differently and there are things like 'being in shock' or as I wrote before not having realized yet that the person is actually dead.
She just explained that coming weekend would not be a typical, "happy" weekend (since that has been the question). I would not read too much from the answer what has not been said.
Well I would not judge her for not grieving. I interpretated it as "Sorry I cannot talk about a TYPICAL weekend because of the funeral". Just reacting on what was asked. And mourning publicly is really not what people like to do, it is a very private thing. At least in Germany.
When the weather is good I'm out in the countryside mountain biking. If something else is offered like last Saturday (Rammstein concert in Olympiastadion Munich) or the week before on Sunday (PeterGabriel concert on Königsplatz Munich) mountain biking has to stand back. 😉

My favorite thing to do on the weekends is having a cup of coffee with my boyfriend on our balcony in the mornings. It’s so nice and peaceful and if we are very lucky we see wild rabbits or foxes in the fields.

It really changes with age. When I was in my 20's I was hardly ever home! I was either at school/work and out with friends. Now in my 40's I love my lazy weekends at home.
When it comes to shops being closed on Sundays, it depends in which state you live. While the rule of thumb is that most things are closed except for entertainment stuff like Resturants or Amusement Parks and necessary things like Hostpitals and Gas stations, in Schleswig-Holstein (The most nothern State of Germany) there are a lot of tourists, because of the Sea, so in Summer everything is still open on Sundays but not as long for example as on a regular Weekend day.

It is not like EVERYTHING is closed on sundays, but mostly stores and supermarkets. If you really need to go shopping groceries, there are ways, but as you said, one will just schedule around it.
About traveling within Germany: There is the so called "Deutschlandticket" or "49€-Ticket" for public transport. It is like a monthly subscription for 49€ and allows you to use all regional trains, Busses and the U-Bahn all over Germany. So everything except for the IC, ICE and EC. The ticket also works within the City networks, so you can also use it in Berlin. It is a new government funded program (Mai 2023) and definitely worth looking into it. There is no cheaper option to get around when you plan on using public transportation. Have lots of fun exploring, it's gonna be great!!
I am super suprised about the answers. My answer would: Saturday I am cleaning my kitchen, wash cloth, preparing food for the next week, to take to work... Many people spend time maintaining there garden etc. These answers in the Video are from Berliners. But Berlin is not germany.
Now that everyone's saying mow the lawn or trim the hedge, I have to do that this weekend too. Regardless of the other things that come my way. I hope that my building materials will be delivered by Friday so that I can pull down the ceiling in the living room of my new house. Meeting up with friends is always a bit difficult. My buddy is a bus driver and usually has to work over the weekend at impossible times. So I celebrate my life with a 38-hour week from Monday to Friday from 6 am to 2 pm.
Not working on Sundays, well not totally correct, there are quite a lot of people who work on Sundays everywhere in the world,they just have to. Nurses,doctors,eirefighters,policemen, caretakers in seniorhomes,people who work in restaurants, people who work in culture stuff (theaters,operas,movies,clubs,), all the people who are envolved in making your free time as nice as possible or simply possible. Or they help to keep you safe.

I think you have a nice perspective on things. ✌I don't know why Germans (or is it just me?🤷♀😂) are kind of obsessed with reaction videos of their country. Maybe because of our past we kind of want to be "everybody's darling". But does not really matter. ^^ I wish you a nice trip to Germany/Europe and hopefully you'll have a lot of nice experiences. I wonder that "Hamburg" (the second largest city in Germany) seems barely a topic in all the reaction videos. Maybe it's not as fancy as Berlin and not as historical than Munich, but it has it's own History with the "Hanse" etc. and has a small, but very nice music-scene, the biggest Harbour in Germany, it's close to the north and east sea. I would just recommend to also spend some days here, but don't know how your schedule looks like. And especially for this Video: Sure, grocery and clothing stores etc. are closed on Sunday, but the restaurants, bakeries, gas stations, "Spätis" or "Kiosk" are allowed to open on Sunday and here in Hamburg for example there is a grocery store at the airport and the central station that are also open. so it's not impossible to get something on Sundays. ;)

On Sunday everything is closed except for restaurants and hospitals, also elderly care. Otherwise I don't know what's open, maybe gas stations. But I'm not sure, I don't have a car. But it makes sense, people aren't suddenly younger or healthier on Sunday. Restaurants simply make the most money at the weekend, so many have a day off during the week, often monday or can be another one but Friday, Saturday and Sunday is always busy there so it wouldn't make sense to close.

Well, I use to work nearly every week-end. My free days are usually Tuesday and Wednesday. So it's absolute rubbish to tell people it's forbidden to work on Sundays. What about doctors, nurses, police men, fire brigades, media workers (like me, at radio and TV stations) and so on? Of course they all have to work on week-ends.

Not only in Germany is most of the buisness close, (Shops, Supermarket, Malls), the same is also in Austria and Switzerland.
More like everywhere in Europe. Truck traffic also forbidden in most of the European countries from saterday 22.00 until sunday 22.00.

The area around Eupen and Malmedy used to be German but got lost to Belgium as reparation after World War I
The Swabian one hits really close, its the same in Rhineland. Probably the same for most countryside areas.

They make it sound as if nobody is working on sundays - that is absolutely not so. Apart of McD, other restaurants, gas stations, bakeries and many more, there are a lot of things that work 24/7. Hospitals, police, railroad, airports, all those things we are taking for granted, also have a lot of employees. Of course also these people are getting time off, but not always on the sunday. The "free weekend" only applies to people who work in companies that are working 5 day weeks, or in office jobs and such.
yes, that's what I thought, too. Many people do work on Sundays (and many of them work to make Sundays these typical "chill out" days for others, keep everything going, or to be there for people in case of emergencies - maybe even without being paid because of doing voluntary work). Maybe in the future all these jobs will be done by robots and then it's totally correct to generalize and say without any ignorance "Germans don't work on Sunday"...

Unlike in rural areas, in Berlin you don't need to "prepare" Sunday. The so-called "Spätis" (1 Späti (sg.) / 3 Spätis (pl.), German "spät" means "late") are open every day and often all night. Here you can buy alcohol as well as things of daily use. And regular supermarkets are open at the major train stations.

Sundays are late breakfast(brunch), a Sunday walk, Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) often together with visiting parents or grandparents, coming home around Abendbrot (dinner) time - and then doing a few things to get ready for Monday morning (looking if you have everything, putting out your clothes, and traditionally the students then exclaim: Mama I need a medieval castle, some Roman costumes and a first edition of Goethes Faust for tomorrow)

Most of this series of videos are excellent, but they are chiefly based in and around Berlin. Berliners are as typical of Germans in general as New Yorkers are of Americans or Londoners are of Brits. In general, many Germans spend many weekends walking or cycling in the countryside, or skiing in winter.
My thoughts too. I live in the country and people here are very outdoorsy.

my weekend has been very stressful for the last 5 months because we have children. because she can't deal with herself yet, but that's not bad, I'm very proud of her. but mostly my weekend is occupied with time for friends. my wife has no problem with that either, she also has time for herself. since grandma always sleeps with us at the weekend. to take the little ones off us so that we can have some free time. i hope you have a lot of fun in germany when you are in germany...

Kind of weird how that girl apologized for her grandmother dying. Makes it seem like she didn't mean much to her, if her priority is having a good story for a random interviewer and not dissappointing him.
Or maybe she hadn't realized it yet (perhaps you noticed how she said "she (the grandmother) LIVES in...").
Maybe it feels weird or 'shaming' to her being the person now who gets the sympathy of everyone and kind of 'crushes' the good mood of everyone.
Maybe it was her first actual loss when she was used to mostly having a good time given her obviously still relatively young age.
Maybe it just sucks to experience grief rather than experience a good time.
We don't know that and I don't think it's very fair to jump to conclusions such as 'apparently the grandmother didn't mean much to her'. Different people cope differently and there are things like 'being in shock' or as I wrote before not having realized yet that the person is actually dead.
She just explained that coming weekend would not be a typical, "happy" weekend (since that has been the question). I would not read too much from the answer what has not been said.
Well I would not judge her for not grieving. I interpretated it as "Sorry I cannot talk about a TYPICAL weekend because of the funeral". Just reacting on what was asked. And mourning publicly is really not what people like to do, it is a very private thing. At least in Germany.

When the weather is good I'm out in the countryside mountain biking. If something else is offered like last Saturday (Rammstein concert in Olympiastadion Munich) or the week before on Sunday (PeterGabriel concert on Königsplatz Munich) mountain biking has to stand back. 😉

My favorite thing to do on the weekends is having a cup of coffee with my boyfriend on our balcony in the mornings. It’s so nice and peaceful and if we are very lucky we see wild rabbits or foxes in the fields.
In my area in Schleswig-Holstein, north of Germany, most grocery shops are open on sunday afternoon from 12:00 to 18:00 (12:00 - 6:00 pm).

It really changes with age. When I was in my 20's I was hardly ever home! I was either at school/work and out with friends. Now in my 40's I love my lazy weekends at home.
When it comes to shops being closed on Sundays, it depends in which state you live. While the rule of thumb is that most things are closed except for entertainment stuff like Resturants or Amusement Parks and necessary things like Hostpitals and Gas stations, in Schleswig-Holstein (The most nothern State of Germany) there are a lot of tourists, because of the Sea, so in Summer everything is still open on Sundays but not as long for example as on a regular Weekend day.
In the past we actually had car free sundays.

It is not like EVERYTHING is closed on sundays, but mostly stores and supermarkets.
If you really need to go shopping groceries, there are ways, but as you said, one will just schedule around it.
About traveling within Germany: There is the so called "Deutschlandticket" or "49€-Ticket" for public transport. It is like a monthly subscription for 49€ and allows you to use all regional trains, Busses and the U-Bahn all over Germany. So everything except for the IC, ICE and EC. The ticket also works within the City networks, so you can also use it in Berlin. It is a new government funded program (Mai 2023) and definitely worth looking into it. There is no cheaper option to get around when you plan on using public transportation.

Not working on Sundays, well not totally correct, there are quite a lot of people who work on Sundays everywhere in the world,they just have to. Nurses,doctors,eirefighters,policemen, caretakers in seniorhomes,people who work in restaurants, people who work in culture stuff (theaters,operas,movies,clubs,), all the people who are envolved in making your free time as nice as possible or simply possible. Or they help to keep you safe.
The normal working week in Germany is from Monday to Friday. Except for some professions where exceptions apply, such as firefighters, police, people in health care (hospitals, nurses).
These people do not need or have to give up their free time. This must be given according to the law on other days.

Hey first of all. I really like your Videos. I think you have a nice perspective on things. ✌I don't know why Germans (or is it just me?🤷♀😂) are kind of obsessed with reaction videos of their country. Maybe because of our past we kind of want to be "everybody's darling". But does not really matter. ^^ I wish you a nice trip to Germany/Europe and hopefully you'll have a lot of nice experiences. I wonder that "Hamburg" (the second largest city in Germany) seems barely a topic in all the reaction videos. Maybe it's not as fancy as Berlin and not as historical than Munich, but it has it's own History with the "Hanse" etc. and has a small, but very nice music-scene, the biggest Harbour in Germany, it's close to the north and east sea. I would just recommend to also spend some days here, but don't know how your schedule looks like. And especially for this Video: Sure, grocery and clothing stores etc. are closed on Sunday, but the restaurants, bakeries, gas stations, "Spätis" or "Kiosk" are allowed to open on Sunday and here in Hamburg for example there is a grocery store at the airport and the central station that are also open. so it's not impossible to get something on Sundays. ;)

Restaurants simply make the most money at the weekend, so many have a day off during the week, often monday or can be another one but Friday, Saturday and Sunday is always busy there so it wouldn't make sense to close.
Of course gas-stations are open, as are there shops

Don't get it twisted though; A lot of people, especially those that have to maintain Germany, have to work. I for one work 24/7 and most of the people I associate with do too. I guess Americans use the word "Spiel" with a pretty close to German pronunciation. So if you want to pronounce the -sz of Janusz, do it just like the s in spiel.

Well, I use to work nearly every week-end. My free days are usually Tuesday and Wednesday. So it's absolute rubbish to tell people it's forbidden to work on Sundays. What about doctors, nurses, police men, fire brigades, media workers (like me, at radio and TV stations) and so on? Of course they all have to work on week-ends.
