  • In the midst of anthropogenic climate change, mass deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and pervasive plastic pollution, some are calling for human-caused destruction of our environment to be made an international crime.
In June 2021, an independent expert panel led by Philippe Sands and Dior Fall Sow proposed the legal definition of a new crime of ecocide, to sit alongside the other international crimes of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and aggression.
Join our panel for a critical discussion of the proposal, its chances of success and the role that international criminal law can and should play in the protection of our global environment:
Moderated by Beth Van Schaack, Leah Kaplan Visiting Professor in Human Rights at Stanford Law School; Nominated Ambassador At Large for Global Criminal Justice at the Department of State
    Panelists:
Charles Jalloh, Professor of Law, Florida International University; International Law Commission; Ecocide Drafting Panel
Christian Wenaweser, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the UN; Former President, ICC Assembly of States Parties
Kate Mackintosh, Executive Director, Promise Institute for Human Rights; Deputy co-chair of the Ecocide Drafting Panel
Richard Dicker, Founding Director, International Justice Program at Human Rights Watch
This event is co-sponsored by the UCLA Law International & Comparative Law Program, the Emmett Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, and the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations.
