- The Special Operations Task Force are the sharpest end of the Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF) troops and they are called upon to get the job done during critical situations and under extreme conditions.
In Episode 1 of #UncommonGrit, over 100 soldiers from various SAF units arrive at the Special Forces Leadership School at Pasir Ris Camp to take part in the two-week Joint Special Forces Selection which comprises a battery of tests to see if they have what it takes, both physically and mentally, to go on to the #SpecialForces Qualification Course.

Just to clear up any misconception, as they've said, this is a selection to go into the Special Forces Qualification course. This itself isnt the SFQ course.
even as a commando NSF roaming around pasir ris camp, we werent allowed to look at the special forces training. They will ask you to look away

@@jianxiongRaven SF qualification course was opposite our bunk. But the SOF have their "camp" within hendon camp. Opaque fencing and heaviliy guarded, even loitering nearby they will ask you to f**k off through the PA system. Stayed there for 1.5 years, we still dont know what's inside. They did a pretty good job at hiding everything from the NSFs

I witnessed first hand the entire course and training these men went through, some of it close to inhumane. At the end of it, you only get a handful of candidates that make it and even then, they might choose to return to NDU or wherever they came from because it's too rigorous and tiring to keep up at this level. All I can say is they deserve every ounce of respect from our nation.
Unfortunately all CDO and NDU regulars MUST be Special Forces qualified to carry on their contract. So the regulars will finish the Q course but not remain on the teams. Such a career move will almost guarantee the end of your contract, so regulars in these units are under alot of pressure.
you must be a medic. anything that is physical is hardcore to you. thus have to take what you say with large grain of rock salt.

The main challenge is to face the ulitimate enemies and get the job done and survive. Thus the ruthless training. The instructors will do their trainee dis service if they have 1 second of mercy and compassion cos the enemies awaiting wont.

You can go in as an NSF. But if you pass and wish to move on to SFQC, you MUST sign on

I applaud for Singapore for everything from economy to defense. Depsite the size of the country, SG still focus on military and police force. For those who wonder about SG's military capability. SG does have submarine and battleship.
We don't have battleships but we have Frigates to Corvettes armed to the teeth

@@soksamnang2150 SG doesn't have nuclear submarines (for obvious reasons), but our navy is still quite capable. We also have an incredible air force (especially given our small airspace)

Really hoping to see how our SOTF selection standards matchez up to other global SF units! There's been so much content covering the selections of other SF units even tier 1 outfits like the aussie SASR and the NZSAS, and so if our guys are truly the tip of the spear, the standards have to be comparable!
There a video of SOTF participating in the Joint International Spec-Ops Event held in the US just before the pandemic back in 2019.
@@ezekielk.3629 yeap I know that one. At Tampa, Florida. But majority were 75th Ranger and European SF units and didnt really feature too much of our guys.
but again, I was wondering can the selection process be featured to the public? Wonder how parents react to it.
@@bd1982 why care about that? The general public especially in SG have no clue about the necessity of tough and risky training especially for special forces. And if tier 1 units like the NZSAS can show their selection process, then I see no reason why we can't show ours

Soldiers whom their faces are blurred are those that have passed the courses and joined SOTF , the rest have failed the selection.

SOTF is nothing compared to SWG of NDU. You must first be a SOTF operative to qualify for SWG selection

I was offered (via a letter handed to me) to undergo the SOF (back then it was called) selection 20 years ago as NSF but didn't take it up as i was ORDing soon. Instresting video. Didn't know the candidates would consist of other ranks as well.
Friend, no ones gets offered to undergo SOF, moreso as an NSF. No one asked and you obviously dont know what you're talking about

No. These are specialised skills.

They won't show it due to OSA and to keep the process under wraps as much as possible, and you can't blame them for that. This is merely a glimpse, nothing more.

shared by my instructor whom is SF, they also conduct annual training exercise with Hong Kong Flying Tiger Team (Fei Hu Diu) back then.

I had a friend who was former SOF said that the SDU (Special Duties Unit) are very pro in CQB tactics.
@@riken1974 Yes, cause HK is very urbanize and they are highly specialize to operate in tight confine spaces and urban ops.

SF course in general is a gentlemen course compared to ranger
When I was in SCS during CAT term, I rmb the army SM, who had done both local and US ranger course, asked everyone in the hall which ranger course was harder. Everyone shouted "US", to which he corrected us by saying local ranger course is harder. Part of the reason was that their meals generally were bigger (because ang moh bigger size usually need to eat more) compared to local range course and that the weather wasn't as bad as SG. He also said local ranger course was a bigger mind fuck than the US one.
Im sure both are equally tough in their own ways. The US Ranger Course looks somewhat like our commando's High Confidence Course. Our Ranger Course is a 69 day back-to-back mission-based course. Bragging rights apart, most Singapore Rangers are alr in a Tier 2 unit e.g. commandos, NDU. It's like how the NDU divers are alr combat divers but they go to US Navy Seal Training Center to go thru BUD/S and earn the Trident.
@@HypertronicTeddy not really, this one is SF Qualification course, not the main SF course where u grad as SF. It's like how Navy SEALs candidates go thru selection school first before even going to BUD/S.
Also our Ranger course is in Brunei 🤣 So there's the hint to how bad itll be

Actually if you noticed in some of the scenes like the low rope climb, there are some candidates with their faces censored while the rest aren't. Probably a hint that those guys made it through selection and perhaps SFQC eventually (hence the hidden identity)

Those soldiers that their faces are blurred are the ones that have passed the courses and joined SOTF !

Fascinating. I'm Malaysian. My understanding is this:
SOTF : tier 1 comparable to delta force, devgru and etc.
NDU, red berets: tier 2 comparable to seals and green berets.
Uniquely SG has the Guards, comparable to our 10th para which is in turn modelled after the British parachute regiment, not considered as special ops. Guess SG's military model is a mixture of both.
I would say that the Singapore commandos are closer in comparison to US Army Rangers than Green Berets. The Green Beret's main mission scope is very unique as force multipliers.
@@johnwong381 that's the thing that got me confused with the US and SG. Two elite formations which kinda overlap; commandos vs guards in SG, 75th rangers vs 82nd Airborne in the US. Seems that the kind of missions these formations go through are about the same. From my POV, SG Guards and Commandos kinda overlap and they even compete against each other in annual competitions. The British are clear cut:
1. Special forces: SBS, SAS and SRR.
2. Elite: Parachute regiment, royal marines and RAF regiment.
The US tier categories which SG tries to emulate seems like another 'special' within special forces.

@@ejf yeah seal team 6. Admission to the unit is another round of selection after graduating the 16 months seals pipepline. Which begs the question: Is seal team 6 more elite than seal team 2? Can you get more 'special' after passing special forces selection? Kinda funny to me.
As a Singaporean,
Delta, Devgru,SAS, NZ-SAS, SASR ( australia) are Tier-1. You can watch NzSAS and SASR selection in youtube. They use the term “Silent Running”, where cadre don’t shout at you. This is a big mind fuck and will cast many doubts in your mind during selection.The SOTF selection reminds me abit of Green Beret, Seal selection, whereby instructors scream at you. The screaming maybe a motivating factor for some.
I salute NSFs who went for selection for fun to test themselves. In the video you can tell arnd 1/3 are NSFs lol.

You don’t have to be a commando or NDU to attend selection. My buddy was a PC for BMT and got selected.
Why not? If he meets the criteria then it should be ok. It’s not bound to just commandos or NDU as there are other better soldiers who don’t get the opportunity to be assign in either units. As for the rank, he probably is signing on if he gets selected?

Yes. I mean look at Navy SEALs and Malaysia's GGK, the recruits going into these forces are civillians, why cant a LCP who went thru BMT go for this course? But i do admit, some NSFs go for trials just to experience it, not because they rlly want to be one.
SG has one more Elite unit which when push comes to shove they have been proven to perform better than even Tier 1 units....once any enemy Special Forces infiltrate into SG they have to be fearful of these guys...The SPF Gurkhas!

Even tier 1 units? There are several tier 1 units. SAS, CAG, Devgru, 24th STS, RRC, SOG, HRT... Tier 1 units followed up by their budget, mission and training. Budget we are far behind. Tier 1 unit operators at least cost tens of millions of dollars to train a single operator. Mission too. We are limited by the mission because it includes clandestine operations and assassination to bring a whole Country's Government down if needed to. Training, not too sure because it is classified. Yes we are really far behind in terms of budget and mission. Even Korean Special Operations, Malaysian GGK Commandos, Philippines Special Operation aren't even tier 1.
You must be joking. Gurkhas aren't even Special Forces. Go read up Wikipedia.
@@ericpeterson6822 Even if they aren't I wouldn't underestimate the Gurkhas if I were you. Having the privilege to be trained by some of them, I daresay that they are really professional and can hold their own against elite units like SOC & Commandos etc

Yes, we have a small selection of Gurkhas Counter-Terrorist Forces under the Singapore Police Force donning grey combat attire armed with SCAR-H

They are trained in different weapon based on the specific mission type. unlike the 'Regular' military unit. Im sure their budget is much bigger too. just my thoughts :)
