    I recently bought a bo staff in place of a quarterstaff that i would usually use. I like to learn lots of different ways how to beat people with sticks lying around. In self defense, of course.

Thank you

    Far from me to question an age old martial art but the raising the knee before a strike seems wrong to me, its choreographing that you are going to attack and gives an opponent more time to react, sure you get more power but speed is more important in my opinion

    • @UltimateTraining
      @UltimateTraining  9 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Razzerfly Excellent point. Actually, in combat/sparring/realistic bojutsu you do not raise the knee before striking. This is something you will only find in the demonstration kata of this style. Just like you will find certain elements in kata within traditional karate that include control and stopping points, in contrast to the constant fluidity and full commitment of combat.

      That is correct for demonstration in a dojo, in a street fight, the bo must come from any position to do the front strike

      Razzerfly What ive learned is that this is the "art" part of martial art. In a direct fight, of course not. Its ridiculous, reduces balance and gives opponents time to react.

      @@colemattia6459 It doesn't have to be a hiss, but letting out air during activity is important in martial arts. Same with boxing and work outs.

      Sunfox boi That’s the sound of the release of his breathing, which makes the strike more precise and stronger than normal. That’s why breathing techniques are ridiculously useful in martial arts when you reach a certain mastery. It’s way easier to move and it improves your strength, speed, reflexes, and many more muscle attributes. It’s even possible to become superhuman without the use of Chi or Qi. Unless the breathing technique is trained to a ridiculous level such as being able to breath consciously while sleeping.

    Neat video Sensei Michael. It appears the small percentage of martial artists that commented didn't notice you wear your gi/do bok incorrectly. It should always be worn left lapel over right. I'm shure a 2nd Dan Sensei knows this and was just in a hurry to shoot the video & dressed quickly. Professional image should always reinforce professional technique. Most martial artists tie their belts incorrectly too. Very nice traditional bo techniques sir. Ours are Kobujitsu based & designed more for modern combat applications. What you're doing looks well suited for competition & kata.

    • @UltimateTraining

      Hi Marc, It could be. Most mop handles, if you remove the metal or plastic components are fully balanced (weighted equilibrium) across the cylindrical dowel. They are pretty lightweight, but a well made wooden mop handle can work well for now. Have fun!

    I can do all the strikes in this video except the front thrust still learning that . But when I do the 4 point strike for example I don't really twist my hands at all . I slide my hand down the bo but I don't twist my front hand. Do you have to twist your hands

    • @UltimateTraining
      @UltimateTraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't really twist your hands on the 4 point strike. You do, however, add some wrist twist to give more torque at the end of the overhead front strike. For the 4 point strike you are just pushing and pulling at the same time. You push the bottom part of the staff out, as you pull the front hand closer to your body. It is a push and pull combination movement.

    Sensei Michael Hodge:
    The question that I want to ask is how does a person maintain control of the Bo at contact? It looks to me as though you do not have a very strong grasp of the Bo. Would not the Bo fly out of the hand when it made contact with an object?

    • @UltimateTraining
      @UltimateTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a very inquisitive question. So, in practice, I tend to keep my hands relaxed (but still gripping the staff well enough) throughout the entire motion, and do not tense up with all of my strength until the last moment before impact. This is a common practice in most martial arts, so that your body can stay loose and fluid, while not expending too much additional energy between impacts. When you do strike, you absolutely need to maintain a strong hold on the staff. Not only are you gripping it, but we are often doing a strong pushing/pulling motion (the lead arm is pushing the rear arm is pulling away at the same time), the wrist muscles and forearm are contracted. There is also a wringing/added torque twist that we add at the end of some strikes that increase the impact's power, while maintaining a grip. Watch some of my newer classes and lessons, in which I more clearly demonstrate these points.

    • @charlesclements4350
      @charlesclements4350 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like that would be very difficult to do to be able to grip the Bo at the moment of impact.

    • @UltimateTraining
      @UltimateTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only way you know is by trying. Striking a very strong staff into a tough tree trunk is a way to test this out. It is not unlike being able to hold onto a baseball bat when you hit something hard or swing into a ball, you can still maintain a grip. Of course, slicing through with a bladed weapon has less kick-back, since you go through, rather than just impact the target.

    • @charlesclements4350
      @charlesclements4350 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      O.K, I'll do that, thank you very much.

    Do not bring the staff into the armpit with most strikes. A person who uses the staff for kata only will do this. The person who has learned some sparring will not. If you bring the staff into the armpit, then you need to lift the elbow and arm to strike outward. Let the staff hit the outside of the mid-bicep for the former reason and, also, to block the arm AND, finally, because physics states you will be hitting yourself at the same speed as your opponent when holding the staff at the thirds.

      In this video, I am teaching a style of staff that is rooted in Japanese bojutsu, but with obvious modern and American influence. I do have a black belt in a style of karate, that includes Korean influence, hence the belt display. If you watch my newest bo videos, you will see that I have started to now teach a much more traditional Japanese style, and with more emphasis on realistic combat bo.

    These seem to be too telegraphing. In theory I'd say, most of these might be really uneffective in combat.

    I don't understand why you make this ugly frown at the end of each strike.

    A toothpick is not a bo. No offence intended.

      I cannot fathom where you took math but doubling the acceleration does not quadruple the force. As a note also, joong bong (or bo in Okinawan (Japanese did not use weapons)) are not tapered to, as you say, make it more powerful., nor overly light (unless you think oak and such are light woods) traditionally. Also, weight is only a word to describe the application of force downward. Final note: force is defined as acceleration over distance. This is proved by Bruce Lee, in particular.

      If force=ma, the the lightness, of the bo, applies a great amount of power(even though it is more likely to break). These kinds of thin bo, with tapered ends are also preferred for demonstration purposes, because they are easily handled, and fast, allowing for much crisper, and showier movement. Since this is show, it only makes sense to choose such a staff. (though I agree, in actual combat, such a fragile bo does seem the poorer choice when compared to something more substantial.)

      It is interesting to note that after I point to the physics flaw on quadrupled power that you have edited the comment to remove it.
