    Thanks Alex for another well thought out presentation. I agree with your conclusions, I am not seeing very much seed build-up this year, my hives have collected some resin and there is evidence of some seeds inside the hives, but very little accumulation on the entrances. I have never used seed traps. My theory is that hives will differ in their need for resin according to how much new building is happening, and that will influence how much seed is (accidentally) collected. Mature hives re-use their propolis and often have good stock-piles of resin already so don't have much need to collect new resin, but where there is new structure to be built, such as the daughter hive in an eduction or after the halves of a split start building new structure, the need for new resin is much higher. It does seem that occasionally a hive will do what your problem one is doing, but normally they manage it quite well themselves. I once saw a hive entrance at the old Hut where the Brisbane Bee Club used to meet that looked like a volcano, the pile of seeds was about 150mm in diameter and probably about 50mm high, surrounding the entrance, which was still open. The key seems to be don't panic, keep observing them, and only act if a problem develops.

      Yep 100% Greg. It's disappointing that this one hive is giving me grief. Despite being a recently separated duplication the box is pretty full. I have no idea where they're putting it all 😄😄

    Hi Alex I have to agree I’ve only had a problem with a young hive where I had to clear the entrance daily it didn’t cause a problem and I enjoyed my time spent with the bees in the evening

    A very interesting for me at least video. I’ve had no experience with cadaghi seed in the three years I’ve had bees, yet I sold a split hive to a friend who lives not far away back in September and he told me a few days ago that he’s got the seeds around the hive entrance. Keep up the great work mate. Cheers.😊

      Interesting Ashley. I forgot to mention that our heaviest collectors are eductions. Absolutely none of our splits are are collecting heavily. 🤷‍♂️

      @@spicershollownativebees8023 that’s interesting, the split hive is probably 15 kilometres north of my place so I just assumed that he must have cadaghi trees close by and I don’t.

    Great video. No full blockages but quite a few hives with cadaghi build up. We put a strip of astro turf in front of hives with cadaghi and that catches a lot of seed, and just monitor entrances

    On another note my hives only have a few seeds, but we do get a lot of resin on the viewing panel. Sometimes I do see the occasional bee coming in with a seed on its back leg. Just put up a video on phorid flies on my channel and you can see the cadaghi seeds inside the hive/box. Thanks again for sharing TrickyTrev 👍🐝🍯

    Hi Alex, I’m in agreement with you. Also, what is to stop a non-seed carrying bee collecting a seed from the trap or landing pad and taking it into the hive? However I do have a concern about any possible effect the seed has on the aroma or flavour of the nb honey. The seed has a distinct unpleasant odour which I think taints the honey. Comments?

    • @spicershollownativebees8023
      @spicershollownativebees8023  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent point with the honey. If they're mixing the cadaghi resin with wax to make propolis and making honey pots with it then there absolutely could be an impact on the honey. Whether it would be a positive or negative effect who knows. It could greatly enhance the already powerful properties of the honey ? I've tasted honey from heaps of water meter pits with loads of seed and resin and haven't noticed any difference. Then again, I haven't given it a thought. I'll pay more attention in the future 😄👍

      @@spicershollownativebees8023 My background is in food research, hence the interest in flavour profiles. The other observation or question is the phorid flies have gone since the seeds have been introduced. Coincidence?

    • @spicershollownativebees8023
      @spicershollownativebees8023  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnmayze maybe no coincidence at all. Maybe Cadaghi repels phorid ? There is very, very little research done on the most destructive pest for our bees. I would have thought it would have been a priority for the academics.

    Not much seed at all here so it's never been a problem 😁
