Australian Stingless Bees - The End of Hockingsi !!!?
G'day Guys. We're back with another video. This time we deal with a couple of struggling Tetragonula Hockingsi colonies. There have been heaps of colonies lost all over South East Queensland and beyond and mostly Hockingsi. Is this natures reset ? Tetragonula Hockingsi were never in South East Queensland before favourable weather and human movement allowed it to happen. Tetragonula Carbonaria and Austroplebeia have always been the endemic species. Are we now seeing nature rebalance the tables ? Carbonaria are making a big comeback after being dominated by the Hockingsi for the last 15 years. Now the Hockingsi are dropping like flies. Interesting times ahead.
Drop a comment if you've lost bees in the last year. I'm interested to know the species, number of colonies lost and approximate location.
Cheers guys,
Alex.

G'day Guys. In this video I show you how I prepare and connect my empty boxes for eductions. It doesn't matter what sort of box you use, the preparation is the same and giving your hives plenty of sun is vital. Hot bees are productive bees. Cold bees are lazy and vulnerable to pest attack. G'day Guys. A very interesting video today. There is a whole backstory to this one and you can read all about it by going to the Australian Native Bee Network Facebook page and reading the post. I'm not going to get into it. This video is about saving this colony rather than the politics of Native Bees. I hope you enjoy it. Cheers, Alex.

Australis Broodlift / Eduction - Observation Hive.
มุมมอง 55210 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hi Guys, it's been a while. Firstly, apologies for the wrong format. Today we are populating one of our Australis Observation hives for a customer. The hive has been connected for 4 days to a motherhive and they are building like crazy. Time to add some brood. I've selected brood from 2 hives to share the load around and the queen cell has come from one of my most productive hives with outstand...
Australis Winter Broodlift
มุมมอง 1.8Kปีที่แล้ว
G'day folks. Welcome back to the channel. Today we show you how it's possible to make a new colony of Austroplebeia Australis over winter. We have used the Broodlift - Eduction method which is very successful at any time of year. The difference with this particular colony is how we did it. Traditionally we would use resources from the motherhive only, but here we used 4 additional hives to sour...
The Ultimate Log Hive ?

G'day friends. I'm really excited about this video. It's a project that started about 4 years ago with a large stringybark that came down in a storm out at the farm. I cut several hive sized lengths and lids from the tree and popped the blocks out of the middle with the chainsaw. Once back at the workshop I machined the logs into what you see today. A steel base was fabricated and fixed to the ...
Hockingsi Vertical Split

G'day guys. Today I split a Hocks hive. Its only the second Tetragonula hive I've split for season 2022-2023. As usual, chuck any questions in the comments and give us the the thumbs up if you like the content. Please consider subscribing to the...

How To Broodlift Austoplebeia Australis
มุมมอง 3.2Kปีที่แล้ว
G'day guys. Today we're doing a Australis Broodlift . I decided to broodlift because the motherhive had too much honey surrounding the brood to do a clean split. Removing the brood and some food was really easy and setting the hives up as a standard duplication works perfectly. I did have to transfer a queen cell from another colony into the daughter hive. Once that queen cell was nearly ready ...

Great. Thanks for the reply and explanation.

Shame to see. I’m finding similar issues with our Hockingsi. Lost 3 hives in the last year ( also 1 Australis ). Have to see what happens. I sometimes swept our weaker hive position with a stronger one to boost bee numbers. This seems to help at the moment. I’ll keep on monitoring them. Thanks for sharing Alex you’re always informative and inspiring. TrickyTrev👍🐝🍯
@TrickyTrev01 that's a shame Trev. It's so widespread. Swapping positions works great 👍
Noosa hinterland 100 hives in forests and 150 on acreage. 100 European hives. Last year's winter hit hard dry this year's cold th in nature dropped 80% over 2 years but in warm areas have thrived after the early summer kicked in spring this year. They are going gang busters. Through the grapevine people have lost 450 hives 150 etc livelihood and $ on a pension. Kinda nice to have a reset when honey is set @$500 a kilo $25 a pop is now ..... but the ones that have suffered the most both natives are in cyprus and or 25mm boxes and logs with less than 25mm thickness. Hoop pine 50mm only for me. Most native bee hives out there are cofins. Ps lost Australis 30 hives last year won't bother again rather go for a surf.
@robertfranc2365 very interesting. Thanks for the comment. Very strange to loose AA. How thick were the AA boxes and what sort of winter position were they in - full sun, part sun, shade ?
Hi, I have had exactly the same thing happen to my 4 year old hockingsi hive. Was thriving a year ago. Even spawned 2 new colonies somewhere nearby in successive years between 2021 and 2022. But i noticed fewer bees towards the end of summer this year Opened it in August and found about 10-20 bees and a queen with a small tennis ball size brood - not in very good condition. Very few stores. It was being attacked by Phorid fly relentlessly. Have hooked it up to a mother hive and it seems to be doing better with bee numbers up. Have read large numbers of posts in Facebook sites about exactly the same thing. I’m in Brisbane.
@francesberndt3627 thanks for the feedback. It seems every 2nd post of the Facebook groups is about dying colonies.
Hi Alex, that’s an interesting video. My 2 hockingsi hives seem to be very active but I have to admit I haven’t opened them for a peek for about six weeks so god only knows what’s going on inside. I would normally be in the middle of splitting my tc’s now but I’ve found most of them aren’t ready yet, they all seem to have used a lot of their stores and don’t have very big broods even though they are all very busy coming and going, so go figure. My AA’s also haven’t done very well over winter so I’m keenly keeping a close eye on them as they seem to be low on numbers and aren’t very active, I hoping for some warmer weather to kick them along. Cheers Ashley
@ashleystephenson9081 It was a pretty harsh winter Ashley. A lot of our AA's shrunk considerably but that's pretty normal. Our TC's seem to be powering along pretty well so far with no casualties. Our Hocks are hit and miss. I'd say 50% are on the edge, 30% are fair and 20% are good. Food availability is terrible in Brisbane atm.
You need to see the Surgeon again and have that nodule removed from you chest.
@compdad but this one is a useful nodule. Maybe some cammo paint 😄
The majority of my hives are hockingsi, any carbonaria end up being hockingsi after a time. All seems ok at the moment fingers crossed. Brood has shrunk over winter on some - I have a couple that are fairly weak but not worse than other years. I am in a cold area of Brisbane too (in terms of winter lows - days are hot).
@PracticalPrimate we're in Brisbane too and normally we would have had multiple take over attempts by now. We haven't had Hockingsi attack anything for over 2 years. Not only that but we've had our Australis take over a Hockingsi colony.
Awesome great to see the queen 🫅. Nice looking hive👍🐝🍯
Cheers Trev. 👌
Good job on the box design and transfer. Nice quick video. 😎👍
Cheers Steve. Hopefully they go OK 👍
Very interesting new design there mate. It will be interesting to see how they go in there. I suppose time will tell.
Yep 100% Ashley. I'm keen to see how they build. It may turn out to be quite a practical design.
Thanks Des - hoping to see a follow up and your thoughts on the new design hive box - keep up the good work and fantastic information 👍
Who's Des ? 😄
Love the hive design ❤
Thankyou 😁
Great vid!! I have a carbonaria log hive that was cut down from a big old dead tree, I placed the log section on top of the stump, they seem happy and active.when’s a good time of the year to start an eduction from log hive to oath hive? Thanks in advance
I'd be waiting until spring. You can try it anytime really but it's always better during the warmer months of the year so the empty box is not too cold.
Should I put a vent on TC Beehive Sydney location as my bees are spitting out moisture from a front lower “entrance” almost closed off. Front top entrance is the one being used. Will a rear vent release to much warmth ?
Yes absolutely. If you have excessive moisture in your hive it will be cold and wet. More ventilation will reduce the amount of condensation making the box drier. It may still be cold inside but cold and dry is much better than cold and wet. I believe the box you have has a drain hole the bottom in one corner. It may have a screw in it. Check that first but there is no downside to adding a vent.
how do I buy one of these hives ? anyone ..please
Where abouts are you located mate ?
Not perfect
Awesome Alex👍. Always great to see your work/videos. Nice shirt also great entrance reminds me of myself 🤣. I’ll have to keep an 👁️ on how this eduction goes, as you said sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Thanks for sharing 👍🐝🍯
@@TrickyTrev01 sorry for the late reply Trev. As it turns out, this eduction didn't work but I've reused the box containing the structure to revive another near dead hive exactly the same as the latest video

Great Work Alex; How far have you come in the last few years. A true professional and workman ship from real world research and a focus on our natives. Well DONE YET AGAIN, Bushmans need to support you 🙂 PS: Camera work getting much better; So how much did Sam have to do with the production. Such a shame that many of the FB Xperts (See one on youtube - Do one - And then go out and do recoveries and spout their skills) distrow so many hives.
Cheers Mark. Lots of cowboys in this game chasing quick bucks. Nothing has changed 😄. Production is 100% me + tripod 🤣. Feedback from those who suffer from motion sickness has forced me to use the tripod more. Next step is a drone 😄
As usual another great video. Keep up the great work Alex.😊
Cheers Ashley 👌
Awesome save glad you were able to help them out. Thanks for sharing 👍🐝🍯
Cheers Trev. Worked out pretty well in the end. I can't ask for more. Maybe better weather 😆
Good to see it all worked out.
Cheers Steve. A shame that intervention was needed in the first place but they are travelling well now 👌
If the mother hive had a queen at the start of the eduction, why would it now be 'queenless'?
It's not Queenless. But, what happens if the motherhive needs to requeen during the process ? Queens don't live forever and no one takes that into consideration.
👍👍
Great video. What are the green and blue entry covers. Where did you get them. Thanks.
Thanks mate. The entrance flanges are like a landing pad for the bees but their main function is to have a large meshed cap fitted for transport or closing the hive. They are floor flanges, available at any plumbing shop or hardware. We also sell them on our website in a variety of colours along with the caps.
Mine started out quick with structure\food etc however slowed and 5 months later still no brood. They are using it as dumping ground for those little seeds. Should i just detach clean and start again next spring?
If you have another strong motherhive you can try swapping the daughter on to it once you've removed as many bees as you can. I've had good success doing that. If you don't have a another strong motherhive I would disconnect and start again.
Good stuff 🤓
Cheers Steve 👌
How good is that. Mine, still nothing
Win some loose some. It's the most unreliable propagation method but when it works as it should it's pretty special.
Awesome video 👏
Thankyou 👌
Bloody awesome mate - my hive was split 18 months ago and lately I’ve had 2 mating swarms 3 weeks apart - I’m deciding whether to split or eduction - love your videos and advice here and on fb👍
Cheers mate. If your boxes are the same you can always start off with eduction and if they don't get it done in the first month you can split. At least the empty box won't be completely empty.
Great video
Thankyou 😁
Well I don’t know what to say, that’s just bloody incredible. You probably need to have holidays more often! Cheers mate.

Well done mate, looking forward to see what they do over the next two weeks.
Cheers Ashley. If they know what's good for them they'll have the job done by the time I get back 😄
Good job. I guess I should try more edumaductions.
Yes and no Steve. Atm the bees are a bit slow and sluggish as you know. I'm definitely not sold on the process but I'll keep doing it in hope of cracking the code 😆😆
I wish I had a) your confidence, and b) your success rate... Of 21 eductions I hooked up to logs nearly 4 years ago now I've so far had 8 takes. Most are half full of stores, although some insist on building a tunnel through the eduction box, no mattter how often I break it up. (All TH, all coated with propolis inside). 5 broodlifts with queen cells have hatched plenty of callows, but never crowned a queen. If I had been callous and cut down those trees to put them in OATH boxes at my current splitting rates I'd have over 150 hives right now instead of 21 logs / trees and a dozen boxes 🤦♂️
Hahahahaha. That's the way it goes David. Eduction is 100% the least reliable method of propagation. And that's why no business that only sells bees can survive doing it that way. We do ok with them, but our splitting success rates are nearly 100%. Eduction maybe 60% with motherhive mortality featuring prominently. I still find it absolutely fascinating to watch when they get it done as they do in the wild - which is brood within 14 days every single time.
Nice Alex👍🐝🍯
👍🍺🍺
Another quality vid. Thanks for all the info you share keep it coming please
Thanks mate. Another couple of instructional videos coming tomorrow 👌
Thanks Des
Cheers mate 👍
Hey mate, any advice on doing an eduction on hocs? Doing one from an old log atm, been about 5 months and still cant see any brood in there yet.
Hi Mate. Eduction is the least reliable method of propagation and logs can be particularly troublesome because you have no idea what's inside them. The colony maybe tiny or there may be heaps of room for them to expand. You can disconnect the daughter hive and try again later. If you leave it connected there is a good chance of the log going queenless when it needs to requeen as the princess wont make it back to the log. Your log will eventually die out and all the bees will move into the front box. You need to be careful and not leave the box connected for too long. Eductions should not take long. 3 or 4 weeks maximum to get brood in the box IF the motherhive is ready. Any longer and the risks increase substantially for the motherhive.
Nice looking roof’s Alex 👍🐝🍯
Cheers Trev. They look good, work great and no maintenance. 👌
Yes! Now that’s my kinda hive! El natural and robust. They will do well.
They are growing nicely 👍
