For the past year and a half, I've been investigating the history of the Church, trying to make sense of what the Church is, where it came from, and how we should engage with it in the modern world. This has set me on a collision course with the claims of Catholicism and Orthodoxy. To investigate these claims, I've set out to interview the smartest people I can find and ask them the most pressing questions of church history. However, I've tried to make this investigation more than just an academic pursuit. Instead, I've sought to also get to know the heartbeat of the Catholic and Orthodox church, understanding their liturgical life by visiting some of their churches and attending their liturgies. In this video, I'm exploring a facet of Catholicism that has always interested me academically, but that I've never explored experientially: monasticism. Thanks to the kindness of Prior Peter and the monks of the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Chicago, I was able to to tour this wonderful monastery and ask questions about Benedictine Catholic monasticism from how much of the day is spent in silence to prayer and much more. Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 23 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. Hi Austin. I came by chance to this video on my news feed. It is very beautifully presented. I am an Armenian Catholic (one of the 23 Rites within the Catholic Church). Armenia was the first Christian nation to adopt Christianity in 301 AD. The first evangelists were Sts. Jude and Bartholomew the Apostles. Then St. Gregory the Illuminator, miraculously brought Armenia out of paganism to Christianity.
Hope to see a future video of an Armenian Catholic Church. Our Eparchy is St. Gregory the Illuminator in Glendale. We also have three churches in the East Coast and in Canada.

Just wanted to add, Catholic Churches have 6 candles on the altar, 3 on either side. In the middle of the candles as you walk in you will see a crucifix either just above or hanging from the ceiling. This arcs back to the menorah, in the menorah the centre candle is called the "Servant" candle.

We visited here in 2007. It’s wonderful to listen to all the explanations. Which shed light on the misconceptions that many Protestants have about the Catholic/ orthodox traditions of Christianity

There was originally one Christian church, the "Catholic" church, the word "catholic" being the Greek word for "universal".
I stayed there as a retreatant 3 years ago. It was a profound experience and the monks were wonderfully hospitable

There are many things that go into the founding of a Monastic Community, (most start as a smaller mission called a Priory, as they get larger they are Abbeys, and later a Monastery, even though most all are called Monasteries, because they have Monks who live, work and pray there.) The Local bishop has to approve or invite the monks to establish a monastic house, and when it is established, the house it is given a Charter. The Charter is a contract between the Religious Community (Monks or Nuns of that community) and their responsibilities to the local community. In the Middle Ages, the charters would include managing the feeding, clothing, educating and providing medical care of the local poor. This Monastic house would when chartered have been given a special responsibility based on the local community's needs outside of the Monastery.
Black Madonna can be found both in Catholic and Orthodox countries. In the East, icons which are Byzantine in origin or style, some of which were produced in 13th- or 14th-century Italy. Other examples from the Middle East, Caucasus or Africa, mainly Egypt and Ethiopia, are even older.
Traditionally the Consecration of a Church takes place after the Mortgage is paid off. However, there is a blessing of the Church which takes place when the Church is first dedicated for use in worship. At the Consecration the site where you saw the candles on the wall are places where the walls are anointed with oil.

I watched this video "My Experience Going to Catholic Mass as a Protestant
" and I was wondering if you could do a video where some catholic priest or theologian explains the mass; the theological and biblical (or non-biblical) bases of each part of the mass. It could be illuminating for both Protestants and Catholics. Thank you for your videos.

In the meantime--as a Protestant, I've found the channels Breaking in the Habit (a channel by a Francican monk named Fr. Casey who has a Catholocism explained series including a lot of the practices and origins) and The Ten Minute Bible Hour (a Protestant who does tour in the various branches of Christianity and often they explain elements too)
The RC Mass is a pagan RE-CRUCIFIXION of our Lord Jesus Christ over and over on altars 24/7 all over the world to the thrill of Satan in hell! It's called the SACRIFICE OF THE MASS because Catholics preach that's what the Lord meant at the Last Supper. NOTHING could be further from the truth! Stay away from it.

Hi Austin I only came across your channel a week back and I have to give you huge props. You're so respectful of the Catholic Church I want to personally thank you. I also recognize your curiosity to learn, even if it does not bring you wholly into the Catholic Church. I'd like to know if you have read or studied about contemplative prayer? This is the highest form of prayer in the Catholic church although it's not taught. If you read up on the topic and even partake in some classic books written by Catholic saints like the Interior Castle or The Ascent of Mount Carmel, you may come to appreciate this form of prayer. I was introduced to is by the Holy Spirit years ago, but it took me 25 years to figure out that it's a formalized method of prayer and one that brings you as close to Gods as possible this side of heaven. God Bless. Noting you visited a monastery, this is the form of prayer monks will partake in - aka as they develop their "interior lives".
Austin, You should check out Marytown in Mundelein, il. It is a large and beautiful Pilgrimage destination run by the Franciscans. There is a big Seminary as well in the area.

They are meant to be adorned and beautiful, for the glory of God.
The simplest I approve of is a Cistercian Abbey, made by monks who deliberately wanted a simple expression of God in the architecture.
(Which doesn't mean to say I would go to simple modern church/chapel... Our Lord is still there in the Blessed Sacrament of the tabernacle)
This was great. You can really see the East in the Benedictine tradition. Have you looked into any Orthodox monastic communities in the US? Probably much smaller but would be intriguing to hear and see a comparison on how the live and pray.

@@paulinewoods375 I was confirmed in November! (Usually happens at Easter, but the Pope gave a dispensation at the start of the COVID stuff that allowed them to be done out of season with the approval of a bishop.) I'm part of a missionary formation programme now which is great!

Thanks for sharing! Very interesting - while I'm theologically very strongly Protestant/Baptist, I do feel the appeal/what we can learn/apply to our lives from monastic tradition, so neat to see.
Also, as a fellow member of the MBI family (graduated from the distance Bachelor program) his mentioning the tie to/challenge of martyrs was interesting to me as over 20 of our fellow graduates have been martyred. And while not martyrs, a missionary with my graduation year died in a plane crash on the field with his wife and one of my Dad's roommates at Moody buried a daughter on the mission field.

A Roman Catholic church I attended had an Eastern Orthodox icon under the altar cloth as a relic.
Would have been nice to see more closely those beautiful stained glass artworks! Wish I could have seen at least one or two nice close-ups on the windows that depict the stories of Christ's life created by master artisans. Will have to travel there myself so to appreciate in person such beauty!!

Maybe you can answer question on why Protestants denigrated the monastic experience so frequently. I never understood it.
Early Protestant perspectives on monasticism is an area I'd like to research. I think Protestantism lost something when it shunned monasticism
Speaking as an English person I can honestly state a true treasure was lost when the monasteries were dissolved by Henry VIII. They were the schools, the centres of learning, the source of welfare relief for the poor and destitute, the hospitals for the sick and dying. It was like losing the whole welfare state..
I think politics played a great part. Protestant reformers needed the backing of nobles, and they agreed to attack monasticism and that those lands should be taken by the nobles/kings. Win win situation.
@@jannguerrero @Jann Guerrero Mmmmmmm. Do I detect someone who sees "the state" as a synonym for "evil"? I never got that. The fact is, as I said, the monasteries did fantastic work, highly valued by my ancestors here in the North of England (type Pilgrimage of Grace in the search engine and see what comes up").. It is a mistake, however, to say they weren't centralised. They had a very strict hierarchy. They also had pan European links. That's what made them such a threat to the monarch. If they had been small independent little local organisations they would have been no threat to Henry.
