  • I am sure you know the Unperson's channel, which is one of my heroes amongst DivKid, Mylar, Red Jeremy, Tom Churchill and Blush Response (just to name a few, sorry if I've missed you). What makes Ally's Unperson channel special - imho - is that he's always using a 104 HP case, some keys and a drummachine or Teenage Engineering device to compensate for the sonic shortcomings of the modular, while getting amazing music from that same 104 HP. They're a joy to watch and listen to.
    I often wonder why the fork I have so many modules I can't even use at the same time. 2024 is a year where I'll focus on the things we already have instead of the latest gear we may not always need. I will not exclude bargain gear like the Abacus. Ally succeeded bringing modular to a wide audience, while making real music. His approach can bring a lot of fun to anyone, with any background, any skill level and any budget. Cheers!
    All references to the Unperson channel are used with honor, respect, and permission.

    it was because of the Unperson that I dared to go into modular, what you are saying is totally right. He keeps it clean and smallish and he has a musicians approach to his music and video's which I try to do as well. But your channel on the other hand blows my mind on a regular basis and inspires me to push and explore. It's really the two of you who gave me the guts and knowledge to dive in and start making music with modular gear. So nice to see my two inspirations merge in one video :D

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I also wanted to make clear that modular is for everyone. It's no longer an elitary niche for rich technocrats with great knowledge and music preferences that scare off kids. Ally did an amazing job with this, much better than I did. Hooking up a Shared System B&G doesn't always help making it look affordable (or worth it). I would really like to do something similar about what's so inspiring about my other heroes, but they have HUGE walls of modules so people can just drool, dream or say 'nah, not for me'. I also realized these starterkit systems fall apart as manufacturers close shops. This is not helping either. We are the resistance! Even ith AI on the rise, the modular will always remain interesting. I'd really welcome the world's first AI eurorack sequencer, though...

    Very cool to see Joey in your list of personal heroes. He has a vast knowledge of the modules and synths he presents on his channel, but it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
    Also, awesome vid explaining this basic rack. I'm currently keeping my 12U 104HP exclusively in the modular box but I'm very very tempted to grab a Digitakt II to sequence everything...
    Edit: the best tip I got for Eurorack is to start building a mono synth like you did, and add modules on what you're missing in utility. And don't buy modules because they sound cool. I've watched many many hours of module explaining on TH-cam when I was specifically looking for them But tend to avoid clicking on just any of them because I know that I'll get the GAS going when I do...

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Joey definitely does not represent my personal music preference, but he's a role model for 'making the music you love most with all means necessary'. I love it when he gets a free module, and just before he has to menu-dive, he just says no f*cking way. That's genuine and honest. Besides, I love Noise Engineering too, so we definitely have a common ground in industrial grunge. Four years into modular, I learned to listen through the harsh sounds because that's how it starts. Just like a birth of a child isn't exactly pretty.

      @@ntro9347 I had a Live for a couple of months, but the workflow definitely isn't for me. I have a Hermod+, so I can basically turn any MIDI sequencer into my main workhorse. Maybe I should just try to find some good M4L devices and start sequencing in Ableton for a bit. Just to focus more on the modules than the sequence.

    I have a significant starter background but my journey into modular started with Mother 32 as a complete voice/keyboard and was then enhanced with maths/braids/dub jr delay, followed by peaks/optomix. A couple swiss army knife modules and less is more and teaches you a lot.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Mother 32 is a great starter, especially because it has so many resources you'd need as separates too. The sequencer may be limited, but it's also super useful as a little keyboard. And that genuine Moog sound is just awesome. I can completely understand and relate to that route!

It's the most powerful module ever and completely unusuable when you're 50+. It's not OK. I am sure you'll love the ALGO. As for changing course, I am going to use the Ally layout when I have to do a new module video. Much easier to show what it can do when all necessary resources are near. 'Sadly I've come too far to change course', doesn't sound in your best interest. But indeed, going back by going forward works too! Phasers to full fun. I love that one.

    Terrific video. I'll have to check out Ally's channel.
    This landed in a timely fashion for me. I've been struggling to make whole projects on a reasonable amount of modular, and I absolutely hate working ITB. So I'm getting started playing around with using the modular to supplement a Polyend Tracker Mini. It's great at beats and sequencing while the modular continues to be an amazing playground for creating all manner of sounds to drop into it. I'm scaling the modular into my Rackbrute 6U to keep things from getting out of hand. More than a starter kit, but not a giant installation or anything.
    But overall, I really like this approach and the this was a really solid way to explain how and why to build something like this out.

      Good to see you again in the comments and I am 100% confident you'll love his channel as much as I do. Maybe it's also because he's making the same choices I do. The difference is I often forget about them as I switch to a different subject or ecosystem. Also, my old Starterkits don't work anymore with Mutable off-stage.

  • @PudPo

It's wild to think how different the landscape would be if Emilie Gillet didn't make MI open source.
    Unperson if by some small chance you see this, what's your usual go to drum machine that you use? I think it's an RD-8 or RD-9 but It's usually cut off on the side of your videos and I can never tell 😢

    Building a complete modular synthesizer as starter kit is only recommended if you can spend the money for a full row of modules all at once.
    If you need to stretch the investment over a period of time I would strongly recommend to start with a semi-modular synthesizer and an empty Eurorack case. The semi-modular is a playable instrument on its own and you can add module by module and play with the setup even if the modular is not a complete instrument (yet).
    To save even more money it might be a good idea to use cheap guitar pedals or the PC (or mixer) for effects.
    If you have time and soldering skills you could build the case and modules as a DIY projects… however, this is definitely a different hobby than making bleep and bloop noises 😂

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thanks for sharing your view on this matter. It's a journey that will be different for each and everyone of us. I started with a semi in 2015 but it didn't work for me. When I started with real modular in 2018, it didn't work for me either. I already had a 5K shared system, but eventually 0-Coast taught me how to use it. It's a tough journey, and we need all the help we can get.

      @@CinematicLaboratory I started with a Moog Mother 32 and a Shared System. Sold the Mother and got another modular case that quickly escalated.
