Hi Ruth, I know the feeling of driving on the wrong side of the road, came to France today on a business trip for the week. Took me a bit of time to get use to driving from Charles de Gaulle airport to Normandy especially when I couldn’t get my Google maps working through the hired cars radio, didn’t help the radio settings being in French and not used French since I was at school many years ago but managed to change it to English. before coming I downloaded the offline maps for around Paris to Normandy in case I lost my signal or my data package didn’t activate correctly until I could get it working. Try downloading offline maps on google maps you can do more than one location as it can help if you lose your signal on your phone. I do the same back home in Scotland as well especially if I’m going somewhere where the phone signal is patch like in some areas of the highlands and Shetland.
I'll definitely do that next time, I face the same sometimes in Scotland but it's easier as usually the road only goes one way! I hope all your driving in France goes ok and enjoy all the yummy food!
2:40 I feel like we should bring back paper maps as a backup just in case. I remember in the 90s, my dad taking out the big map and navigating by it 😅 then Mapquest came and I’d write down the directions cus we didn’t have smartphones. Now people don’t know the way around their city without google maps! It’s kinda sad. I like to know a city by heart so I’m not a prisoner to my phone
That’s what I love to do when I travel try all the food! That’s the best!I love cheese too and would have enjoyed that cheese shop! That’s so great that you got to speak French in the shops! The tunnels were really interesting. Wonderful video Ruth! I really enjoyed it! Looking forward to the next one!
Ruth you have started in a fabulous place, Arras is lovely. He bakeries in France are to die for. I will be heading to Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D Day in June. I shall spend my allowance of 90 days all around that region again. If you go further south do visit Oradour Sur Glaine. It's very special.
Came across your vlogs about travelling down through England and in to France by chance. Very enjoyable and informative. I had that data problem too and it caused problems with using the paris metro app. Looking forward to seeing more of your travels.
@ruthaisling I'm no expert Ruth but as I say I am with giffgaff which uses O2 signals but I'm using pay as you go. Most times it has been very good but just in my case I did have that snag in France re data...solved quickly by getting a French data simcard plus my phone is dual sim ...ie can take 2 sim cards giving greater flexibility. Another little point you refer to the limitations imposed post brexit on uk passport holders. Having an Irish passport is very useful as we retain the same eu travel and settlement rights as before. I assume you have no Irish family connections? I know the applications from the UK for Irish passports has increased dramatically with people aserting their Irish ancestry.
I love your account of driving on the right. As an American driving in England for the first time, it took 4 hours to drive the 50 miles from Golders Green, London, to Carfax, in Oxford. I kept taking exits when I didn't intend to and struggling to find my way back onto the motorway. And how have I never heard of Arras before? Your lovely videos are becoming a tutorial for me too. And I'd like to congratulate you on 3M total views and soon a well-deserved 50K subscribers, marvelous! A fine start to a Happy New Year. :)
@@ruthaisling Yes, it felt so uncomfortable having cars pass on the right. And yes, guilty on the numbers. It's lovely to see how many appreciate your fine and entertaining work.

Hi Ruth i'm.French your French accent is very good and very nice! Especialy when you pronounce the word Baguette!, and meringue! Keep going! I wish you a very nice trip over France! Denis ...
I haven't been to France yet but I have been to Noumea , New Caledonia in the South Pacific so I understand your fascination with food and bakeries. I spent 2 days walking and eating the lovely French food. I figured I was walking so it was OK to have more than one pastry.......many more...yum!!!! Ruth I'm really enjoying your channel. I enjoyed learning how the channel tunnel worked. It was only a concept when I lived in London on my big O.E (overseas experience) in 1974/76. Plus joining the common market was just a referendum 1975. Lot of changing history, so thanks for sharing and updates on changing history, for me. I feel old now LOL! Bon Chance! with your travels and stay safe.
Greetings from Hong Kong. Hello, Miss Ruth. It is been a long time since your appearance in Mr. Shota’s videos. Never been to France before, but traveling by plane, train and car are convenient. Also, not just the culture, but the cuisine and practice are also fascinating.
One of my favourite meals in france was just picking up some bread, cheese, fruit and wine at a little mini mart and having a picnic on a river bank, listening to locals chat in French as they strolled past. It was cheap and a "pinch myself I'm really in france" moment
I like Arras very much and have visited a few times. Lovely to see it in your video. Well done for having some basic French before you headed over, makes all the difference, especially when you get a bit further south. Hint on the driving. My first few trips over to Europe I drove resting my elbow on the ledge at the bottom of the window. Stopped me wandering over to the wrong side of the road. I am looking forward to the rest of this series on France. M
My siblings and I did the same journey, tunnel included, in 2018 for our great uncles’s centenary and stayed in Arras too. One thing we discovered is that the town centre is not quite what it seems. Arras was badly damaged during WW1 and afterwards the damaged buildings around the Grand Place were rebuilt in concrete but to the same design. If you walk around and look carefully you can find the replicas. I’ve seen the videos out of sequence so it’s a bit poignant contrasting your excitement at arriving in France with what happened when things got a bit pear shaped but these things happen and I’m sure next time will go better.
A cheese and bread paradise exists probably in most towns in France. Pain au Chocolat for breakfast. Merci beaucoup. :) And that glimpse of the huge Thiepval memorial at the end... 😥
Hi Ruth - I’ve never heard of Arras France so this is quite enlightening. Understand about driving on the “wrong” side of the road as coming from 🇨🇦 it would be the same for me driving in the UK on the left side of the road. The French are known for their food and this is a fun part of your video. It seems that computer codes and maps are international now. Thanks for sharing your French trip - très bon et très bien! Bye bye
@@ruthaisling Welcome Ruth! I just watched the other video about your visiting the WW1 Memorials and Cemeteries. Now I understand your visit to Arras to pay respect to your family and others who lost their lives during the Great War. It is a very touching video and learning experience. Thank you so much for sharing it with us and condolences in the loss of your family members who paid the ultimate price of war. Take care & Cheers! 💙🏴💙
There's a cracking Michelin starred restaurant on that square but I can't remember the name of it! I ate there once on a day trip to take a customer on a tour of the factory the company I work for has on the outskirts of Arras.
Those buildings are in Flemish architectural style, typical of northern France (and Belgium, over the border). If you get to Lille at any stage (not far from where you are but back north) you will find it has a magnificent “Grand Place” in that style.

Ruth Aras looked so interesting. Wow the bakeries, yummy.😊
The bakeries are so incredible!

Delightful. Thank you
That’s what I love to do when I travel try all the food! That’s the best!I love cheese too and would have enjoyed that cheese shop! That’s so great that you got to speak French in the shops! The tunnels were really interesting. Wonderful video Ruth! I really enjoyed it! Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Mary, it was an interesting place to visit!
Oh wow, that will be an interesting time to visit. Thanks for the recommendation about Oradour Sur Glaine.
Ah Arras was the first stop for me on my motorbike trip too. I stayed in a youth hostel on La Grand' Place.
It's a convenient location not far from Calais!
Came across your vlogs about travelling down through England and in to France by chance. Very enjoyable and informative. I had that data problem too and it caused problems with using the paris metro app. Looking forward to seeing more of your travels.
Thanks Patrick! There were some other comments recommending 02 so I might look at switching to them for the next time I go?
@ruthaisling I'm no expert Ruth but as I say I am with giffgaff which uses O2 signals but I'm using pay as you go. Most times it has been very good but just in my case I did have that snag in France re data...solved quickly by getting a French data simcard plus my phone is dual sim ...ie can take 2 sim cards giving greater flexibility.
Another little point you refer to the limitations imposed post brexit on uk passport holders. Having an Irish passport is very useful as we retain the same eu travel and settlement rights as before. I assume you have no Irish family connections? I know the applications from the UK for Irish passports has increased dramatically with people aserting their Irish ancestry.
nice video, I am from the netherlands. I do know france and the UK very well. Good luck with your travel :)
Thanks! 😃

Thanks Eric, it's interesting you had the same experience but on the opposite side! Thank you, you're always keeping an eye on the numbers! 👀😂
@@ruthaisling Yes, it felt so uncomfortable having cars pass on the right. And yes, guilty on the numbers. It's lovely to see how many appreciate your fine and entertaining work.
@@ericrabinowitz6390 I'm always surprised, but really appreciate how many people have subscribed to the channel!
Go Ruth, have a great time

Tacos from O'tacos looks delicious. Monoprix was one of my fav supermarket while I was there. Le Beffroy church and the houses reminded me of my home town in Poland a little. Thank you for sharing.
The tacos were really good! Thanks for watching!
Great video !’cheese looks incredible
It was!
@@ruthaisling I sent you a pic of my Fondu here locally. I love all my cheeses. Hope your having a great day and new adventure. Cheers Troy
Hi Ruth i'm.French your French accent is very good and very nice! Especialy when you pronounce the word Baguette!, and meringue! Keep going! I wish you a very nice trip over France! Denis ...
Thank you 😃 I need to keep practising!
@@ruthaisling you" re gifted !
Hi Ruth i have become your gargantuan fan on TH-cam. Love and Respect from Ooty.
Wow, thank you 😊
I like your english, you are articulate.
PS : Ruth I'm watching your videos down here in New Zealand 😊
Thanks so much for watching from New Zealand! French food is so yummy, I’m glad you enjoyed it too!
Greetings from Hong Kong. Hello, Miss Ruth.
It is been a long time since your appearance in Mr. Shota’s videos.
Never been to France before, but traveling by plane, train and car are convenient.
Also, not just the culture, but the cuisine and practice are also fascinating.
Long time no see! Thanks for watching the video!
Nice that you have a Valentine's day date, ha ha What a fun adventure!!
😂😂
One of my favourite meals in france was just picking up some bread, cheese, fruit and wine at a little mini mart and having a picnic on a river bank, listening to locals chat in French as they strolled past. It was cheap and a "pinch myself I'm really in france" moment
Brilliant, I'll do that next time when I go back in warmer temperatures!
France, it seems to me from a distance, is a paradise for food!
It absolutely is!
What a beautiful video ❤ that baguettes looks fab.. i wish i am able to travel to this beautiful part of france 🇫🇷
I hope so too!

Great vlog Ruth, It is a stunning place. You have not found the chocolate yet. Thanks.
No chocolate yet, I probably don't need any more food 😂
I like Arras very much and have visited a few times. Lovely to see it in your video. Well done for having some basic French before you headed over, makes all the difference, especially when you get a bit further south.
Hint on the driving. My first few trips over to Europe I drove resting my elbow on the ledge at the bottom of the window. Stopped me wandering over to the wrong side of the road.
I am looking forward to the rest of this series on France.
M
Thanks for watching and glad to hear you like Arras too, it's such a lovely city. Thanks for the driving tip too, that's helpful to know!
Nice to hear you have also visited. My next trip has to be better! 🫠
Yummy, love the french cuisine.
A cheese and bread paradise exists probably in most towns in France. Pain au Chocolat for breakfast. Merci beaucoup. :) And that glimpse of the huge Thiepval memorial at the end... 😥
Excellent video, wishing you all the best. Hope all is well, take care
Thank you! You too!
Bye bye
Thanks Jane, I didn't know much about Arras either so it was nice to explore this new place!
Enjoy your time in France and eating the french bread cheese and cakes have to try the chocolate filled crepes
Oh I’ll need to try some of those next!
The food looks wonderful. Have a wonderful adventure. France was fun for me.
Thanks, the food is so good! Glad to hear you enjoyed it too!
There's a cracking Michelin starred restaurant on that square but I can't remember the name of it! I ate there once on a day trip to take a customer on a tour of the factory the company I work for has on the outskirts of Arras.
Oh I'll need to visit next time I go! The place I had the cheese fondue was on the square and highly rated but I don't think it had a star!
Those buildings are in Flemish architectural style, typical of northern France (and Belgium, over the border). If you get to Lille at any stage (not far from where you are but back north) you will find it has a magnificent “Grand Place” in that style.
Thanks for the recommendation, the building are so amazing!
