Elvis sings this song with all of the sadness and clarity of someone brought up in a poor home and can feel the pain and frustration of the child and the mother. Beautiful, haunting, and unfortunately just as relevant today.
Elvis began his life during the Great Depression in the Deep South. He was also raised Southern Baptist. For him it wasn’t if you were white or black, he was just poor. Klopp He was also Momma’s Boy. So when Elvis sang, he was taking you to church.
He loved black people… after leaving Tupelo when he got famous he went back and had a park built for them. Growing up in Tupelo the little black kids weren’t aloud to play there and it always made him sad. An amazing person!!
It's 2024 and I am still listening, I have loved Elvis Presley's music since the early 60's. He was and will always be The King Of Rock n Roll. Elvis was the consummate showman. People still impersonate him quite well, but there will never be another performer like him.❤

It became a ritual to get there 30 to 45 minutes early and just smoke and hangout. Anyone who has grown up poor in the slums as I have can readily identify with this song, it's your own life story. Only by the grace of God am I here at 61, He enabled me to escape from that life and go on to a better one. This song still makes me cry when I think of those who didn't make it out alive, were cut down at a young age from the drug deal gone wrong, the drive by shooting, knifed over a pack of cigarettes, or some such. Those who didn't get a chance to become an adult. R.I.P. 😢

For me, this is just the most beautiful song of all of Elvis's... He has made it an immortal classic for its writer, who must have been over the moon to have Elvis sing it!...
This is probably the best song ever to get the message across about youths being forgotten and going hungry. Elvis was most likely the first to bring their plight to the rest of the nation. He was a true humanitarian.

Michael Gaynor it's the same the whole world over. Rich people's lives are worth more than anyone else's. I refuse to use to say poor. When even more people die who used to do the menial tasks. The rich people can either 1. Pay people lots more, to be their slaves, as there's only a few of them. 2. Get off their lazy fat asses and empty their own trash🙏👏🏻

My dad was murdered when I was 10, a month before Elvis died. They will always and forever be intertwined, the two events. I can SO relate to your story. I'm so sorry for the loss of your father.
This song makes me think of one of my most favorite sayings in life, "Be thankful for what you have 'cause you might get what you deserve." It helps bring EMPATHY for others. I'm thankful that I was raised in the country. A very well-written/performed song.
I was 10 yrs old living in northeast Denver in 1969. Loved this song then and now. Nothing wrong with growing up in the Ghetto it wasn't my choice. Good and bad times. Wouldn't change anything, loved my life then!
The very fact that over 50 years after this was recorded, it is STILL a reflection of life is both a testament to its awesomeness as a musical reflection of life and disturbing that it STILL happens & NO ONE but Elvis could EVER give it the emotion it demands.
I remember when this song came out. Riding in the car with mom going to Fort Knox commissary…. I was just 13 and Elvis was King. Good ole days. Great song by Mac Davis.
Wow , this touched my heart . Very true , we see these things and turn the other away instead of giving out a helping hand . God , forgive me if I’ve been selfish.

He died on my Moms birthday Aug 16th...I was only 13, I'll never forget that day.
Respect
My dad was murdered when I was 10, a month before Elvis died. They will always and forever be intertwined, the two events. I can SO relate to your story. I'm so sorry for the loss of your father.
One of his most touching songs that still applies more than ever in 2023!!❤❤❤
Things don't change, history repeats itself... Jesus is the answer 🛐🕊️✝️
He is missed so much. There will never be another like him he sung every song from his heart.
Hello 👋 Janet , I guess you're a Good country MUSIC lover?
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face!

Just listen to this voice..damn .and what a beautiful beautiful human being
This song makes me think of one of my most favorite sayings in life, "Be thankful for what you have 'cause you might get what you deserve." It helps bring EMPATHY for others. I'm thankful that I was raised in the country. A very well-written/performed song.
Memories listen to this man he touched a lot of people I was 10 when he passed
Wow just wow, after all this time this song still gives me the goosebumps😇😇😇😇
A beautiful man. A beautiful singer. Beautiful song. Words are so humbling. He died so young. Rest in peace mr Presley. A true hero

I am 13 in 2024 and love Elvis. Espescially this song❤
I was 10 yrs old living in northeast Denver in 1969. Loved this song then and now. Nothing wrong with growing up in the Ghetto it wasn't my choice. Good and bad times. Wouldn't change anything, loved my life then!
Sure did not know Mac Davis wrote this. 70 y.o. now and they still bring tears to my eyes. One of my favorite Elvis songs.
And Memories and Vegas song . Mac Davis said I have never seen a check with so many zeros .

Hi Sylvia, how are you doing
The very fact that over 50 years after this was recorded, it is STILL a reflection of life is both a testament to its awesomeness as a musical reflection of life and disturbing that it STILL happens & NO ONE but Elvis could EVER give it the emotion it demands.
Elvis was magic at telling story's through his songs.
📖
Mac Davis told that story
One of my fav. He brought attention to poor intercity strife and struggles in 1969 and still to this day nothing has changed.
I lost my mum 7 months ago, i'll never get over her loss, she loved this song, love and miss you mum xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I think that your mother who loved this song was a good person. She may rest in peace. Greetings for you and good luck. Your mother will protect you.
Beautiful, what else is there to say, no one could sing this song like Elvis!!!!
Very sad and tragic song with strong social message. Of all of Elvis' songs it's my favorite. Great song!
This is also my favorite Elvis song as well.
If this is your favorite, then you're a DEPRAVED MORON.
@@CooManTunes If you are an intentional commentary attacker for no special reason YOUR FUCKING HEAD DROWNS IN YOUR ARSEHOLE.
Mine, too!
Mine, too.
These lyrics foster understanding and compassion so beautifully! Elvis' talent makes the message unforgettable!
I'm 52 now, and I've listened to Elvis all my life, this is one of my favourites, the lyrics are amazing.
No one sings this song like Elvis and no one can bring more heartbreak and true meaning to this song like he can.....
Mac Davis sings it better
Elvis matters band sounds just like him.
Eric cartman did a pretty good job
I remember when this song came out. Riding in the car with mom going to Fort Knox commissary…. I was just 13 and Elvis was King. Good ole days. Great song by Mac Davis.
Wow , this touched my heart . Very true , we see these things and turn the other away instead of giving out a helping hand . God , forgive me if I’ve been selfish.
I remember listening to this song grow up poor. I'm 62 now and it still brings tears to my eyes..Miss Eva, so many turned and looked the way.. So glad it touched your heart ❤
Hi Eva, how are you doing
Almost half a century and nothing has changed.

And until people change, there can be no real change
When gov't is yo momma and daddy that's how it is
Elvis saw no color, he poured his soul into this song!
Way to go for Elvis using his incredible voice to speak for the young people he was a real humanitarian.
Great song Elvis
Great music
He certainly was ❤️
Elvis was a very sensitive person
...Elvis' voice gives it that touch that touches deepest part of ever ones heart, in the Ghetto or out of it...

R.I.P. DAD This was you entrance song on the day of your Funeral. Gone but never forgotten, until we meet againxxx
I was born in 1961 in the ghetto of West Howe, Bournemouth. I was devasted when my Dad died in 1973 but my Mum kept me and my 3 brothers going. RIP XXXXXX
A beautiful and inspiring cover of this classic song. The King really invokes the emotion created in the theme. Elvis truly was one of the greatest vessels through which a tune could find its highest level of expression.
The Black Hat Writer
Cover? Mac Davis wrote it, Elvis sang it. Davis may have sung it.
Amen
This song still gets to me every time I hear it. Elvis always had a way of conveying awareness of issues in society. It still holds true today. Love Elvis's heart he had for people.
Stunning song. Can’t imagine anybody doing it better.
Proud to have actually lived at the same time as this man. So many genuine greats are no longer with us. RIP The King
Still an amazing haunting sweet song. Elvis is a legendary Icon. Gone but not forgotten. Still missed.
He sang this song from the heart😭
My God. It's been 55 years since this song was written. And it still carries his meaning till today ❤
