One of my favorite songs of all time. I can never get tired of listening to this song. Every time I listen to it, I want to cry. Steve must have been expressing something profound in his life when he composed this.
I saw an interview and he said that when he was recording this song he was in the middle of a water fast, day 5 or so, and that the melody was given to him as previous poster stated. Id say that he was pretty raw, emotionally and spiritually at that moment.

C'est peut-être moi mais j'ai trouvé cette version un peu approximative par moment (comme si les bends n'atteignaient pas toujours la note juste) et pas au niveau des autres dispos sur TH-cam. Il a l'âge qu'il a malgré tout. Même si ça reste exceptionnel.
I disagree. He wrote the song. He came up with all of the notes and parts himself - naturally he's going to be able to remember them all. Steve Vai is one of the world's greatest guitarists and he's an amazing musician overall - he does lots of incredible things, but remembering his own songs is not one of them.....

such a badass, and musical genius thanks for the video! this guys contributions to music are so incredible, I know he uses the synergy modules now but his amp the VL100 is the most under rated and versatile amp I ever heard, from tones of Vai to Gran Hechicero, simply amazing what it can do, and what he can do!
I'm from korea & watched his play in korea,,this music, maybe 92 or 93 in seoul 88 actually ..playing this music..string was broken and everyone was surprised...but he isnt... & change the string & play ,I'll never never forget in my life at that time he is the GOD!!!

First time I saw or even heard of Steve Vai he was playing with Zappa. I saw them in Chicago in the early 80's. At first, I was confused as to who he was and why he was on stage with Frank, but by the end of the show, I was a fan. A lot of respect for Steve. Not just his contribution to his instrument which is pretty extensive, but as a person.
Actually love his small mistakes. Cause it reminds me how great he was upto today, considering his age now (2022) and how we are lucky that still, we are able to watch him perform! Living Legend ❤️🤟

I've been a Steve Vai fan since Eat'em And Smile was the first cassette tape I ever bought as a kid. I listened to that album today while I worked and it's still one of the greatest guitar albums ever. I saw Steve with Satriani at a G3 show long ago. 2nd row, center. My brother got his pick and still has it. He was amazing then and he hasn't slowed down a bit. Awesome guitar player.

I saw him in Montréal (90's) can't recall if it was at the Metropolis. The fact the ticket was only 25$ tells a lot about the greatness of his spirit. I agree, to witness this dude playing in real life is such a blessing. The musicians he hires, my God... never gonna forget the drummer eating marshmallows while rolling on the snare with one hand?!!??!! It was hilarious.

I'm a keyboard player, and never liked the the hardest side of rock, so i did'nt know who Steve Vai was, but when i heard this song in a music store i felt in love, for the writing and the arrangment even before the tech skills.
And just think he NEVER does the song the same way twice. Always adds something new, different, alien almost. Vai is still relevant and has lost nothing. Amazing improv at the end and love the new black Ibanez Pia!

thats what impresses me most about these types of virtuosos. Many people can play Beethoven, but to remember the pieces must be something else.
