NEW SEAT LEON - TIME TO CANCEL THAT Mk8 GOLF?!

  • FULL AND FRANK REVIEW OF A RIGHT HAND DRIVE CAR ON IMPERFECT UK ROADS
In this 100% non-sponsored video I get to grips with the new Seat Leon because after my time with the Mk8 Golf in June and new Audi A3 in August I was keen to see how the new Leon shaped up as it seemed to fix aesthetic issues of the Golf but for a significantly lower price than its rivals. It wasn't just me that wanted to find out, numerous people on social media asked for this test, something which encouraged the kind chaps at Seat UK to lend me this box fresh Leon Estate 1.5 eTSI EVO FR Estate. I did have the choice of a hatchback but wanted a Leon with the eTSI mild hybrid engine to keep things on a level playing field with the Golf I tested and this was the only choice. The other reason was because I'd recently owned a 2019 FR TDI Estate and my memories of this were still vivid.
The Leon is marginally cheaper than the equivalent Golf but what do you lose because of that savings, and are there in fact gains to be had too?

Background info on me : I wrote for VW Driver and Audi Driver magazines from 2003-2019. I've been selling VW Group cars since 2002 as my only job. I passed my driving test in 1994 and my first car was a Polo, second was a Golf, 3rd was a Golf GTI. I have been a VWG owner ever since but work allows me to drive a lot of cars from other manufacturers to which I have an open mind but none have swayed me, yet.....

That’s great to read. I’ve ordered one and I’m really concerned that I’ve made a mistake. I genuinely thought the FR would have independent rear suspension! Gutted! Also I didn’t realise there were no physical buttons! Oh well, let’s just hope it hold its value to some degree.

I love the thing so much I just bought one in this spec (couple small options ticked)
When I first saw them I preferred my current Leon and didn't like the front but it's really grown on me a lot, the only bit I'm still unsure about is the Leon script on the back.
Having the learn the infotainment system doesn't bother me, I'm a tech head so will pick that up quick, there's only the climate controls that could be seen as annoying but I tend to set the temp and let the car do it's thing now anyway so don't really change things about when driving.
I like to watch reviews, especially at this moment when we can't really go test driving a car but I always take things with a pinch of salt, some of the things different reviewers pick up on are complete non issues. Like one picked up on the slider for the volume and how it was "dangerous" when driving... use the bloody volume wheel on the steering wheel ya idiot like everyone else will that actually spends some time with the car.

I have the hatch version of this, same engine and even same colour, find it so relaxing to drive on the road, find the ride is absolutely fine, the screen after a couple of days makes total sense , all round love it, its 150bhp with 17in wheels, it is never going to be a performance car, I have the Audi for that.

Andrew an excellent review as always. Though it strikes me, the reason cars now have blind spot warning indicators is because the majority of drivers are too lazy to look over their shoulder before changing lanes. Same with auto wipers and lights. If drivers can't figure out they need lights on when it's dark or wipers when it's wet perhaps they should be taking the bus!.

    • @FabulousWanderers

It's great to watch a review of a 'normal / every day' car for a change. It's also refreshing for the reviewer to be balanced and realistic. As for the car, overall, it looks decent, although I'm not convinced by those wheels. I absolutely agree with you that Seat should be supplying all Leon's with multi link suspension as standard - especially if they have a £2000 leeway! Ultimately, I have a feeling this model will be a good buy when its three years old, and has taken the biggest hit on depreciation. Keep up the good work!!

On the “original” left hand drive car, all the mild hybrid tech is on the opposite side of the driver, for better weight distribution. Guess VAG didn’t bother to move it over in the UK version...
Tip: buy the plug-in hybrid. It’s basically a Golf GTE drivetrain from 2015 with 204bhp. But lots of updates and refinements, and battery is up from 10kWh to 13kWh capacity. Oh and that car gets the fully independent rear suspension, and with that a great ride in spite of an extra 200kg.

Great review! We won't get those in the US, which is a shame, because I really like the styling of the Leon better than any of the VW's currently being sold. My guess is the higher performance model will give the VW's a run for the money in all categories! Happy driving!

A good all rounder with some nice standard options. If you are not a brand affiliate, arguably better value overall. I still think most will want the prestige of VW/Audi ownership which means SEAT will still get overlooked by the majority of those in the market for a VAG product (similar in part to Skoda). The Cupra version on the other hand is a more attractive proposition again. A well balanced review as always Andrew, thank you.

@@ST-ur7oh no, cruise control, heated mirrors, automatic lights, anti-dazzle technology, electric side mirrors, automatic right and left turning lights, and then optional extra like tinted windows, different body trim, leather steering wheel & seats, AC, digital display. It’s pretty impressive for a ‘12 car, considering most of this technology doesn’t come with many mid range cars manufactured in the last 5 years. Most hatchbacks don’t have this technology so in my books it’s impressive, plus it’s a reliable car I can depend on I do over 20K miles a year and I’ve not had one issue yet.

Ive got the Golf Mk8 but sadly Ive had some issues with it, pre Oct 2020 eTSI, after this date they changed the spec to include some more standard goodies. Im quite keen on the leon as it has what the Golf does but not the software and hardware issues and of course poor customer service from VW UK.
You are right on the subtle differences between the two vehicles, VW is a bit more premium and the ride on the eTSI is pretty smooth.

  • @terry19601

Where you have cars that share the same or similar platforms both exterior and interior you get very similar cars, indeed you tend to pay a bit more or less depending on the badge.
As in a previous comment I made ( Golf 8) there's not to much to fault SEAT, their packages are similar as you would expect knowing the parent company.
Where you find the differences is in small touches that add that bit of induduality and or styling that kind of sways your thought process's into liking that particualr brand.
In addition after sales play a large part ( well it did in my purchase of the VW), we drivers really do not get that warm feeling of a good car, good after service, problem free motoring, SEAT's quality seems to last longer these days ( Used market), materials are a better standard, would I have one, I was tempted until I noted the hard ride, wasnt going to pay that extra on something that should be standard.

Interesting comments on the ride. I've had 2 mark 3 Leon STs. 2014 FR 1.4 140 and 2017 SE 1.6tdi.
    Both torsion beam.
The 1.4FR was too hard. Good on motorways but firm everywhere else. The SE is softer but still has a firm edge. Can sometimes be slightly jiggly. The FR also a lot noisier with 17s. My current SE is quiet in terms of tyre noise. The cabin of the new model looks more modern and more spacious. Golf looks a little bit nicer inside. Still think Leon's make most sense 2nd hand. Much cheaper at 1 or 2 years old. Also, every car I've had or hired with Michelin tyres has been loud. Most recent a Hyundai i20 which was louder at 30 than my Leon is at 60! My focus mark 1 on Michelins was deafening. My good year all season tyres are very quiet and the Hancock that came with it also quiet. I'd definitely try and get independent suspension next time.

Great informative video, been waiting to see what they’re like. I’m quite impressed actually. I think SEAT’s downside is some people expect a Golf for £3000 less. Wasn’t sure about the rear when I first saw it but I think it’s really nice, front end, like you say is a bit Focus. It’s a shame Audi don’t do an A3 estate, but then that would be £5000+ more. Great video, as always👍. Interesting comparison between 3 of the 4 main VAG cars (I await your test of the new Skoda Octavia....).
I totally agree with your view of the rear suspension - on a normal drive, you wouldn't be driving any slower with a lesser powered car than a higher powered one (unless you're on a track or an Autobahn!), so why cut cost like that? Irritates me!
Purely personal thing, but I actually prefer the digital representation of analogue dials on the Seat (& the Golf 8 too) to those on the Audi virtual cockpit...
Don't think a Leon would be for me - I'd probably go for a Golf 8 (the A3 is good & as I mentioned on another comment, my Wife has just bought one!), but I'd be looking for an estate. Other than that, choosing between a Golf 8 hatch & an Audi A3 Sportback is not that easy....pros & cons to both, to be honest.
Styling? Ok, although I don't like that gimmicky across the tailgate tail light - would be distracting if you were following a Leon at night on a single carriageway....I like the Golf rear end, but I do like simple, unfussy styling (or "boring", perhaps🤣).
Keep the videos coming - they are honest, impartial & very informative. And I was being serious about the Skoda too - comparing Seats & Skodas would be a good thing!

Could the Octavia be the one to have, then? The golf estate, the Octavia estate and the Leon estate have the same wheelbase. The Octavia also has multi-link (or at least I'm lead to believe that). Whilst it may not have proper HVAC controls, it has the all impossible clima button. It may just be the pick of the bunch considering the snow brush/umbrella in the doors, and the washer fluid cap that doubles up as a funnel.

With 17" wheels and DCC its not worse than my C Class with Airmatic on 17" winter tires, at least in normal driving, the DCC handles small bumps even slightly better... the Airmatic in the Merc isnt worth the money and isn't as comfy soft as one might think. I have the 2021 1.5 TSI Evo FR hatchback and I definitely don't agree with your review on the ride comfort, its definitely not a harsh ride, it's quite smooth to drive on UK roads and smooths the mild bumps out very well, I think the harshness you describe is because you are testing the estate which imo is not as good looking either. You meed to tell the viewers that you have the FR Sport because there are more driver assist options with the FR Sport over the FR. As for road noise take off the Michelins and put pirelli cinturato P7 seal inside tyres on, always more road noise with an estate over the hatchback

It's a good looking car - although on this particular FR spec, the wheels make it look ten years older. My BIGGEST problem with SEAT's styling, however, is the wheel arch gap on their PHEVs. It really is sitting so high - and this includes the Cupra models - that it is significantly compromising the looks on these cars. Is this REALLY necessary, SEAT?

I think VAG are going down the road of cost cutting to make up for diesel-gate. It's an awful shame as the Golf 6/7 are fantastic cars whereas the Golf 8 seems a step down. Same goes for Skoda where the Octavia 2 had multi link rear suspension and a full on RHD conversion where the bonnet release and handbrake were on the right side whereas they weren't moved in the later models. I hope this doesn't spell the end for the marque.

On my 4th Leon which is a 67 excellence 1.4 150 model. Over the past few months, I've watched reviews on all 4 new VAG cars. Best looking is the A3, Best interior is the Octavia, Best all-rounder is the Golf, Best value is the Octavia ..... Leon is lacking here and requires a bit of sparkle, as mentioned lack of shortcut buttons for climate etc and independent rear suspension are deal breakers for me...... MK8 Golf for me :)

I can't see why you'd need sports suspension. My Leon ST SE mark 3 turns in keenly to bends, corners flat and is confidence inspiring on A/B roads. Planted is a good word. You never get kick back or bounced off course in bends. That actually means I can carry more speed through bends than the FR I had before. Unless you're on smooth race tracks I think they should offer stock suspension on FR trim which is firm but reasonably comfortable most of the time. My FR was only comfortable on motorways and smooth A roads. On B roads it was too jiggly. A key with cars with no independent suspension is to keep tyre pressures fairly low 31/29 psi front/rear is best. At 34/32 things get bouncy. Adaptive dampers would be best no doubt or the independent rear suspension set up. Shame the FR150 doesn't get it.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's it exactly Paul. Only bit I don't necessarily agree with is adaptive dampers on a torsion beam car. My old Leon FR had this with 18" wheels and it was still a brittle ride as ultimately it only affects the dampers and a lot of harshness comes from the rest of the hardware. They need to go multilink on FR, simple as that.

    • @paultasker7788
