  • There's no competition when it comes to sales, the VW Golf has absolutely trounced the Seat Leon in that department over the years, and generally the Golf has always been the better car. But are things about the change? As always, the new Leon is very similar to its VW Group sibling, but there are a few key differences which actually make it a better car. Watch to find out why.

It’s interesting if you look up regulation on CHMSL the only specification is that it is centred unless on a moving panel like a door and is in absolute terms, higher than the side stop lamps. Technically it is higher because the line it’s in rests atop of the lenses for the side stop lamps. You see this on some vans as well like Renault vans, where the CHMSL is in the middle under the tail door window and is also not “high” mounted.

just bought the LEON FR etsi 150HP and its an absolute dream to drive more sensors than the space shuttle and so smooth to drive and excellent steering , so much to say about it but it has endless good points. Night time driving is like going down Oxford street at night during Xmas, ambient interior lighting makes you feel relaxed. Lots of points you didnt make is there are alarms to let you know if something is in your blind spots , also lane assist and auto braking when in cruise control and you can set the distance you want between you and the car in front. At this time l cannot fault this car in any way but only had it a month but so far so nice

Ι'm ordering the Leon e Hybrid next month after having diven all the VW Group offerings
The Leon won me easilly with it's handling and general Feel.
The infotainment system is a bit tricky as it is not user friendly when on the move with the lack of shortcut buttons but overall it was my pick as handling and road feel are a high priority and seats are the sporty in that price range of the four.
The Scala was the next best overall bang for yout buck but was a bit passive and it leaned a lot in the corners.

The price difference for the upgrade to the 150HP and better rear suspension on the Golf was a big surprise for me. It's a shame that in this generation the seat doesn't even have a way to get the independent rear suspension.

    • @Lolstrike1
      @Lolstrike1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The times of independent rear suspension are long gone for anything but hot hatches. Us folk who care about such details are not the brands' targets and infotainment sells cars. Sad times. As someone with loads of VAG experience tho, equipment decisions overall are associated a lot to branding, and you wouldnt want to undercut the Golf with its own brother as group strategy.

I’ve got the Atlantic Ocean blue metallic VW Golf Life 1.5 Tsi 150bhp - 2021 delivered last week. Absolutely love it. Great car and perfect for my commute on the highway everyday (40km one way to work). However somethings probably wrong with my gearbox as the 4th gear is abit tricky. I need to really push it in hardly to get inside 4th gear. Will be going back to VW next week as agreed with the seller to have a check on the gearbox. But having has the car for less than a week I’m really pleased. Quick car with low consumption. Great adaptive cruise controll that somehow knows when there’s a roundabout nearby and automatically slows down my car and tells me to change gear. Great LED lights on dark Swedish winter roads. Just feels great. Although I never tried the Seat Leon unfortunately but there was such a great offer on this one almost fully equipped with sat-nav and a 1.5 tsi 150bhp brand new car with 0km for €23900 on sale so I couldn’t resist having this one with full warranties.

Did a brought search on a family car (As a family car with two small kids and a dog, a station is required though). Compared and had a test drive in the Leon, Octavia, Golf, Focus and 308. The Leon and Skoda were actually on the bottom of my list at first. Admitting to be brand sensible and slightly posh, who wants to be seen in a Seat or Skoda? But finance also plays a role. And at the end of the day I do want the highest level of quality for the money I put on the table. And I was literally blown away by the Leon! The interior finish with the outstanding looking seats and finish. The exterior with the led light strip on the back. And the real proof of the pudding, the drivability in the Leon was the perfect balance between comfort - when driving with the family - and fun sporty feel - when driving alone. All that combined with the huge hoot and back passengers space - bringing the Leon on the same level as the space masters of Skoda - this was the best choice on all aspects! It literally put a smile on my face. Ordered the 1.5 eTsi DSG FR ST launch edition in this exact grey colour. Added the 18” alloys as seen in many other reviews. Looking forward to drive it soon!

Thanks for the input what would you go for if you had a bit more cash ?
There are a few annoying things about Leon I want to address.
Firstly who on earth puts ambient lighting on top of dashboard.. looks distractive.
Secondly Leon seems to fail Moose tests even at lower speeds + good tires + sport mode. Whats the meaning of a Leon if you fail a simple test ?
And 3rd, the torsion beam. Do you think its an advantage ? I know independent rear suspension on Golf takes the driving experience to another level at low speeds. But I think torsion could be better at high speeds ?
Also sound insulation seems better on other cars. Do you agree with it ?
By the way my heart desires an Octavia but the darn thing is too long (4.65). And I usually drive in non-urbanized areas and beaches. People recommend me Captur or Karoq but I want a premium-ish car haha..

I like my tech simple, especially while driving. I found with some buttons on the right (up/down) controlling a more complicated system because of the adaptive aspect that's mostly on the left of the steering wheel, buttons didn't do what I expected them to, and when I'd finally got limit mode selected and clicked OK, the ACC toggled on/off, not the speed limiter. Sure I'd suss it over time, but intuitive is isn't. Had it a week and gave up. Would read the book, but it goes back tomorrow.

The new Seat lineup is great looking. But who told the VAG engineers that removing physical buttons for climate control is a good idea? I do hope this trend goes away soon. There is a good reason why those buttons were physical up to this moment. This technology is not new- manufacturers could have changed to capacitive years ago but it is a lot harder to operate while moving. Now, they are doing it because of cost cutting.

Bought a third generation Leon back in March. Got a great deal as they had just announced that the new fourth generation Leon would be coming soon and the dealer was keen to shift the "old" model. 15,800€ with 5 year warranty, 5 years free maintenance and fully comp insurance for 300€. It's got the 130 bhp 1.5 TSI petrol engine in it and it's a joy to drive. Loads of great safety features too with rear view camera, front and rear sensors and a lane drift detector which keeps you from falling asleep at the wheel. Highly recommended.

We can't compare Golf and Leon. They're similar yet VERY different. For example, I own a Golf MK7 Highline with lots of extras. When I test drove the new Leon, something felt..lacking. I mean, it's LOVELY. I love it, don't get me wrong. I agree that VW makes boring vehicles. That's totally true. But sometimes, it's what makes us choose Volkswagen - reliability, attention to detail, interior quality, and decent price.
And if we talk about value for money, i'd pick Skoda Scala every day! That boot space is out of the world.

I have stayed with the golf and traded up from the golf 7.5 to golf 8 and I have been very impressed with it 1000 miles in to ownership
The build is equivalent to my old 7.5 and this includes the interior and the touch screen is slick in use and it doesn’t take long to use the functions when you are driving it regularly a lot of it is familiar from the old one
The lag on the touchscreen has been corrected with the software update mine is faultless now
I have been pleased with the economy on the 1.5 150 tsi engine over the 130 I had before

Some say the Golf is worth it over the Leon. Some way it the other way around. It depends on what you want to spend, CAN spend and what you find important. I prefer the little Extra refinement layer the Golf gives such as:
    - Multi-link at 150 bhp
    - Some more sound insulation and comfort
    - Dash design feels more streamlined, less prominent tablet effect as a result. The tablet in the Leon kind of ruins the interior for me. Just a bit though it is still alright.
    - Electric seats as standard on Style trim (in NL). With 14 way adjustment, memory, thigh-extension, 4-way lumbar and, albeit gimmicky, massage functions. The massage is well, underwhelming but noticeable.
    - Matrix LED as option at least. and the taillights of the IQ lights look just as cool as the lightbar in the Leon. Look it up and you'll see it actually has way more detail that the Leon's.
    - Ambient lights in the back. Small thing but still.
    - Graphics on the Leon's infotainment look more modern than in the Golf, but are way busier with too many on-screen icons at all times. Golf requires more menu digging but the icons are clearer and bigger.
    - Leon has literally 0 separate buttons for shortcuts. Golf has shortcuts for AC, Drive modes, Parking stuff and drive assists. it's something...I guess?
    - Option for a light interior with some nice leatherette armrests... for no extra costs.
All this with slightly nicer build quality and similar tech. For me It was a clear choice. But I do notice that for some the styling and the price of the Leon does a lot. And that is fine.
IDK about Golf with DCC vs Leon so I won't write about the fun part.

VW has dropped the ball with the Golf. Strange because Skoda and Seat are supposed to be below yet the Skoda Enyac for example looks like it has a better interior than the id3 in both quality and the infotainment screen. Here, the Seat doesn't have any lower build or material quality and a better infotainment system. You'd think they'd share everything like for like or is VW the only one paying for the emissions thing? The golf 6 was a solid granite feeling car with great materials even soft touch on the lower door panels. The golf set an expectation back then and for VW to provide this is now just disappointing. A Peugeot 308 and Renault Megane have better materials inside however they all fall short on the infotainment side of things. None of the mainstream carmakers have good infotainment. Some may have easy and simple to use ones but functionality is limited, they can't be updated and the screen graphics are poor. However Hyundai and Kia probably do them the best now when talking of mainstream carmakers.
