Honestly gotta respect the guy for backing-up all of his complaints; he was doing cool things and utilizing eye-opening ideas. The problem is that they were forced into a composition in a soulless manner. Whether the music is simple or complicated, it cannot be put together like some sort of math equation without losing the human element.

The Really Really Giant Steps part reminds me of my jazz guitar professor in college. He was always coming up with crazy arrangements when he lead the jazz combo I was in. When I sang “Blue Skies” as my vocal piece, there were these chromatic chord changes and extended bars at the end of the B section, and ever since I’ve sung the melody differently. He wasn’t arrogant, he was just kind of out there and vibed with the music. The good old days....

This is a problem I have with a lot of prog and fusion instrumentalists, namely that they forget that music is supposed to sound appealing, and they get so focused on "breaking the rules" or showcasing their technique and knowledge of music theory that it ends up sounding goofy/cacophonous/trite.
Make no mistake, I love prog and fusion, but, say, drummers like Virgil Donati, while talented beyond belief, forget to make actual music for actual listening IMO and a lot of his rhythms sound like he did them just so he could say he did whatever super complex polyrhythm it was
