Thoughts aren't 'sins' and the fact you are brainwashed into thinking you need to 'repent' for thinking 'bad thoughts' is sad. If you don't act on them your thoughts are just things in your head. Thinking you are a bad person for wanting to hit someone in the face is like thinking you are a good person for wanting to giving money to charity.
The Minions in this movie are surprisingly restrained compared to the many sequels. But you can tell the studio knew right away that they had an instant success with them.
No so true unfortunately they’ve overused these characters 😢 but back in the day they figured it out quick
Also, credit where it's due, the Minions have made me chuckle out loud on at least two occasions. (The first time was when they yelled "lapiñata!" and hit someone, and the second time was when they did the "Vincent Adultman" trenchcoat schtick, and the one with two eyes was exactly at chest level.)

Ikr I remember seeing this in theaters at age 20 and they were fine, nothing major, nothing awful. Times changed but yeah at the time :shrug:
The minions started exactly what they were intended for: Gru's sidekicks. Only when Illumination realized how popular they became did the focus shift from Gru onto them.

Part of the reason that this movie got so popular is that it isnt just for kids. It has SO MANY adult jokes or moments that only adults will understand, but was still engaging enough to entertain kids.

It's actually the second book in a series. The first being "That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon." They actually are fun reads that don't take themselves seriously and are written well.

Going to an English-speaking library in my (non-English speaking) country with a friend and finding a physical copy in the wild was a fun time. :D I was on a tight budget and didn't spring for it, but part of me regrets it, tbh!

He was talking about its popularity and reception at the time. And as someone who was there, yeah, it was very successful to the point of being obnoxiously ubiquitous. It also wasn't nearly as respected as it would become later; I remember a lot of people in animation fan communities at the time regarding it much the same way people look at Illumination films now.

DreamWorks really kills it with the "subversive villain" or "unexpected hero" stories. They did it with Shrek 1&2, Kung Fu Panda 1&2, Despicable Me and Megamind.

Our family just watched "Rise of Gru" last week and my daughter (8) litterally screamed when she saw Gru's big ship come out at the end!!!! It made her so so happy!! It was cool to see her start making connections between movies!! 😁

Agreed; they were actually funny the first time around, or they wouldn't have been marketed into oblivion in the first place. The bit just got old fast.
Honestly same. They were comparatively restrained comedic relief in the first movie and not used as heavily so it didn't get overwhelming. But they got popular outside of the movie and after DM2 the writers just quickly overdid it.
They were popular in the begining but they got over exposed. I still like them but I get how people got sick of them
Yeah, they worked as comic relief sidekicks in this movie. The problem came when the executives decided they could carry films on their own, which they can’t.
As someone who was a huge The Berenstain Bears fan in the 90s, owning nearly every book, watched the show, etc, I can attest that Alex's recollection of that particular book is 100% EXACTLY what happened. 😂
I've never read this particular book. But I WOULD pay for an entire collection of "The Binklestein Bears" like this. 😂😂

We had a few Berenstain Bears books back in the day. We actually had this particular one - it's about changing your bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyle to be more healthy and maintain a healthy weight. Never in a million years would I have guessed seeing this book referenced in a video about Despicable Me 😂

This movie is honestly so good, the second was pretty decent too with the addition of lucy, but i feel illumination just ran it into the ground
Zootopia blows Despicable Me out of the water.
The characters are interesting and well-developed, the storyline is engaging, and the animation is top-notch.
And don't even get me started on the humor. It's clever, witty, and genuinely funny.

If it wasn't for the minions, i think this movie would be a timeless classic. Gru and the girls are so hilarious and the whole theme of becoming a parent you always wanted to have is so touching. But how can I recommed it to someone without sounding stupid? "Go watch a movie where yellow tick-tack scream Banana! Its hilarious!" 😑
50+ years from now when facebook minions craze wears off, the movie will still hold up
tthe minions unironically rock. little chaos gremlins that never get openly malicious. the bit in the trailer for the new one where the one is stuck in a vending machine and another throws a shaken up soda can in and it explodes always gets me. the guy who voices them, Pierre Coffin (also director of the first three and the first minions movie), is a supremely talented voice actor, conveys so much with no actual text.
the memes of the minions and the actual activities of the minions are completely different enterprises.

I was about 19 when this movie came out and a smoking buddy of mine gave me the DVD for my birthday. This was a guy who listened to death metal and was super into that scene and lifestyle so I was very confused. He saw the look on my face and just said "Trust me, it's good and not just for kids" . The dude was 100% correct. Instant classic. I actually didn't even know who did the voice for Gru until about halfway thru because his accent is really well done ~
I can't explain it, but I love The Minions movie. As someone adopted in the old days, no records, no trace, this movie makes me really twitchy. I have a lot of friends whose parents genuinely hated all children, including their own kids. That theme is real.
If you hate kids you shouldn't have any! I hate kids, too, but at least I don't have any kids and avoid being around them as much as possible.

Gru and Dru, I find to be a kind of clever subversion of Good Twin/Evil Twin. Though neither are really evil, they have very contrasted personalities, and the "good" one wants to go into villainy.

In defense of Matilda, they didn’t have a problem with the brother. It was just Matilda who was obviously different from them.
They didn't like Matilda because she was willing to call out her dad's shady dealership business and they didn't like the idea of her engaging her mind.
The most responsible thing they ever did was allow Ms. Honey to adopt her at the end of the movie.
