  • Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl is asked via Zoom if he's aware that Stanford women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer is challenging other coaches to pledge money during NCAA Tournament to aid Ukraine. Bruce responds with a passionate and hopeful comparison of the Jewish holiday Purim (celebrated earlier this week) and how it relates to the current events.

Thank you Coach Pearl for taking such a public and principled stand on behalf of the Ukrainian people. Thank you for sharing an important event in our people's history and making the connection to today's tragic events. Never Again needs to be more than just empty words. Hoping the world takes notice.

Man! What a strong personal character! Coach Pearl’s stock just went way up in my eyes when he pledged to support the people of Ukraine with a donation for every 3-pointer. We ARE extremely fortunate to have him as our coach at Auburn! What a man of God as well! That’s the way you lead. War Eagle!

What an astonishing declaration of faith, demonstration of pride in one's heritage and clear eyed call for the world to stand up for what is right.

It's not a joke. And I take this occasion to wish you and your family a very HAPPY PASSOVER. Shlomit Lucichj

WOW! I'm equally impressed he knows the significance of Purim. Yes, Esther convinced the King that Haman was the enemy, a la Putin is Ukraine's enemy. The King didn't exterminate all the Jews - they hung Haman.

@@benlevy9308 I think some people will embrace any position they think is anti-liberal or owning liberals. Our support for this type of statement will probably mean its less attractive since it no longer feeds into the culture wars.

Ukrainian suffering aside, that suffering is minuscule in comparison to what the Nazis did to the jews. And that suffering is miniscule, also, in comparison to what the current Persian rulers in Tehran intend to do to the Jews. Coach Pearl kept it clean. I'm not constrained by the same forces that constrain him. I'm sure he would have preferred to have gone into it more, how the same Administration that preen's self-righteously and twist itself into pretzels to advocate for the Ukrainian people, is simultaneously enabling the world's greatest sponsor of terrorism, iran, not only to acquire nuclear bombs in the missiles to deliver them on israel, but also is filling their coffers with dollars in euros with which to finance more terrorist militias with which to surround israel. So yes, I don't have to keep quiet. Coach Pearl would have liked to have said more, but he didn't quite know how to pull it off.
