    The wait for ‘The Winds of Winter’ has been so long that brilliant theorists have spent years speculating about its plot to an extent I’ve found equally gratifying. At this point, I almost don’t care what Martin writes because I already have a crystallized version of the story in my head. While I know I’ll enjoy his prose, I can’t help but feel a bit of disappointment, knowing my expectations might not pan out.

    I'm not even mad or worried about the future of ASOIAF. As any cultural phenomenon it is by essence unique and has no point of reference. I'm amazed by the phenomenon itself, first by the success and creative crash of the TV series, and then by the absolute madness of the community. In the past two years many new YT channels exploded and there has never been more conversation, speculation and creation around this universe. It has almost become an hive creation. Even if Martin died tomorrow, without finishing its novels, it would still remain a monumental work and would stay in memories for a long time. Tolkien didn't publish nor completed everything he wanted to and we are nonetheless talking about it.

    My personal theory is that GRRM experienced creative gridlock caused by the pressure of finishing the books before the show. The direction he originally intended to take the story doesn't work (at least for him) but because he wanted to finish it he tried to push the story out regardless, which inevitably leads to writers block. Somewhere around the pandemic he realised this and he started to completely rework the story of wow and dos. Also I've thought for a long time that 2025 would be the year. From a publisher's point of view I would say an winter release before the holidays but maybe they'll feel obligated to get the book in the hands of readers as soon as possible

    • @fenixchief7
      @fenixchief7 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My theory is that he got popular enough to do whatever he wants and he no longer needs to engage with his magnum opus, which was clearly lightning in a bottle because there was steep drop off with Feast and Dance.
      After playing Elden Ring, I just think GRRM is more passionate about the broadstrokes of history than anything else.
      He wants to set the stage, not write the drama. Which is fine, The Lands Between is better than Westeros and one of the best fantasy worlds ever created, along with Middle Earth, Malazan, Randland.
      I specify Westeros because Essos and Sothoros is where all the really cool stuff is in his books. He just doesnt take us there.

    I was such a summer child back in 2015, I had discovered GOT after brushing it off thinking it was some stuffy period drama for the first 3 seasons, until I happened upon a scene of one episode late at night and immediately binged the first 3 seasons. In the period between 3 and 4 I bought th books and devoured them. I thought by the time I finished the show and books Winds would surely only be, at the most, a year away, 😂. I have a specific take on Martin finishing the series that is also related to his NotABlog. Martin famously got very angry with fans who wanted to know what would happen to the series if he died before it was finished. As a result of this, it is commonly believed that Martin would not allow anyone else to finish the series for him if he did die before it was completed. And because of the length of time that it is taking him to complete Winds, many people feel that there is no hope that we will ever get A Dream of Spring. I think this is wrong. I think that he felt that it was completely inappropriate for people to ask him about his death. But he said some interesting things about a fellow author and friend who had passed away in one of his blog posts. If you go back through his posts over the past couple of years, there has been more than one time that he has made a post about the death of a fellow author. In one of these, he talked about an incomplete book that this author had been working on for many, many years. And he remarked that it was his hope that someone would eventually finish that book. By saying this he was admitting that having someone complete the work of an author after their death was not something that he was opposed to. It is also well-known that George has written copious notes about the world of ASOIAF. And he has a close team of assistants who work with him, some of whom are authors. I would be very surprised if George did not have a plan for someone he personally approves of who would be designated with seeing ASOIAF finished if he could not complete it. Perhaps he would even think that Ryan Condall would be appropriate for that role. I sincerely hope that Martin is able to see the series finished himself. And I do think that it is very likely that we will be getting Winds sometime in the fairly near future. Hopefully in 2025. But Martin has seen others series completed after the author’s death, with some done more successfully than others. He knows that ASOIAF is his Opus Magnum. I don’t think he would want to see it remain forever incomplete.

    • @GRB-tj6uj
      @GRB-tj6uj 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I'm always surprised to see people take that one remark as gospel. I also don't take him as the kind of person who would want his papers to be burned, which would be the only way of preventing a publisher at one point in the future breaking the bank by putting out every piece of unpublished writing they can find. And knowing that'll happen is reason enough for him to make some arrangements

    • @Seelenverheizer
      @Seelenverheizer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe he realised that he will not be able to writte the last book properly. Realisticly it would be best and i think in his interest to find a good writter he clicks with (his assistants are god awefull writters) create and outline and have the co-writter writte the book and GRRM gets the chapters to add florishes etc. With a proper co-writter dreams could be out in like 2 or 3 years when they work together and while doing this during his lifetime having the editorial role he has his free time, joy of writting (in small doses) and the chapters could very likely feel a lot like GRRM.
      Thats was likely what the cryptic post is meaning and why he met with the publisher. Confirm Winds are coming out this chrismas + finalising the co-writting deal.

      There is exactly 0 chance it releases in a state that satisfies even a fraction of his audience, which is a massive part of why it has been so long forthcoming.
      The hype surrounding it is intense. The fervor of fans who felt slighted by the TV show ending is at a fever pitch.
      George is currently in a deep lose-lose scenario. Either he releases the book and people are dissatisfied or he doesn't and people are dissatisfied.
      I think that he has grown so fond of Killing things he created to torture his audience that he's making the ultimate choice to kill his entire series.

      That's what I think for years ago. Nothing he can deliver will satisfy the hardcore people obsessed with creating theories upon theories to the point of having their own headcanon and insert their own fanfics into the work.
      The best thing that can happen to ASOIAF is that it remains incomplete. I've seen enough cases of other books and manga where the ending definitely messed up the work and over time most people lost interest, while those who remain incomplete still maintain a strong interest.
      I doubt George can deliver anything good enough.
      Many ASOIAF fans have never read his other books, out of curiosity go to Goodreads and see their ratings, they are very low, I've read almost everything written by him and I maintain my opinion that he is overrated.
      Maybe in a few years the new theory that will emerge is that he never even wrote ASOIAF, but a ghost-writer who has already died. Now that would be hilarious.

    I get that the gardening style is what makes ASOIAF so special and part of why it’s so good but man, sometimes I wish he’d put the trowel down and start designing a house because it’s just plain taking too long, 12-13 years is hilariously bad, like I’d rather it’s good than it’s rushed but at this point it’s actually ridiculous and I don’t think we can call 12 years “rushed”.
    I hate to be negative about Winds but goddamn, at this point I’ve just started deciding what theories I like most and made my own ending to the story.

    I’ve gotten into a few arguments with friends about when the Winds of Winter will be released, in addition to the future books. A lot of my friends believe GRRM will be gone before he even finishes them. I however truly believe he’s cooking one of the best stories of all time. I believe he’s struggling to create conclusions and keep track of characters without ruining some other factor, but I believe once he figures it out it’ll blow our minds. Once Winds is out, Dream will probably follow soon after

    My secret hope is he was almost done with TWOW before the pandemic and decided he’ll finish ADOS while he’s stuck home and the last four years he’s been writing that. When he announces TWOW will be coming out, he also announces some time later (3-6 months) that ADOS will drop as a way to reward fans for their patience. Will it really happen? I give it a 10% chance.

    This blog post did have a lot of good crumbs of information concerning Winds. However, my main takeaway from this particular blog post was perhaps he was planting a seed in his fan base that the books and the show will be nothing like each other. (Most fans would rejoice at this) He seems to think he owes something to HBO, or the show crew, or fans of the show, to keep the books similar to the show. Idk why he would think that but it's just the feeling I get when reading or listening to his words.

    I think that the only way we see ADOS is if George allows 3 or 4 writers who he respects to help him, after telling them the details and walking them through all the plot points. We would then have ADOS by 2030. Since he doesn't want anyone to touch "his baby" - as he once said when asked if he would allow someone to finish his book after he died - it looks like ADOS will remain a dream.
    But who knows, maybe he shocks us all, lives to see 90, and we get ADOS in 2038.

    I'm legit curious how some of these big GoT channels can post video ideas when multiple of them say they haven't even read the books recently lol. Like sure, you're knowledgeable and probably retain a lot of info. But it just makes me question how good their memory and intel is. Looking up a word or phrase on that site that can pull from all the books won't always give you additional info/context. Just interesting.
    I haven't seen it happen here, but I have seen Preston have an issue where that came up and he blamed his ignorance on not having read the series recently like that was an acceptable excuse for saying nonsense. It made me wonder why he was even talking about whatever the topic it was as if he had some deep insight to it (I have no idea what livestream it was, I rarely watch him, it just happened to be the one I popped in on and subsequently left after that happened and was at least several months ago)

    As a fellow novelist let enlighten you (and your fans) a little about George's plight. He is a self described "Gardener" type of novelist. I would call him a "Pantster", he would call me an "Architect" instead of a "Plotter", but I digress. Either way he will NEED to step away for every other creative project, "House of Dragon" and "Duck & Egg" as examples. A "Gardener" type is, by nature, slow to re-immerse themselves in a sidelined narrative. So until he decides to re-commit himself 100% to ASOIAF, he will never finish "Winds.." Adding to this is the "Bran is King" note. As a "Gardener" he lets the story "grow" naturally, however he now must force the narrative to a predetermined end. Something that "Gardener"s never(?) do.

    There is exactly 0 chance Winds releases in a state that satisfies even a fraction of his audience, which is a massive part of why it has been so long forthcoming.

    I'm a fool but, I believe we will get all or nothing. I actually believe due to his writing style and the complexity of the story he has had to write and edit and rewrite the entire rest of the story so that he has enough to go back edit to make it all work. I can't picture it being feasible to do what need be done any other way.

    Im pretty confident that he is almost finishing it. But i dont really care if he takes 10 more years as long as he come with good payoffs for what he have builded up in feast and dance. Only way to really be dissapointed with this book is if its only more build up for dream of spring and dont have at least a couple of reveals on some of the mysteries of the series. Im really looking forward to the magic be expanded and be less in the backgound and get more in the forefront of the story, the others storyline have to start impacting westeros for real is the least i expect from a book called the winds of winter, winter has to come and i hope it has more consequences then theons death and takes more than one night to solve it, other than that dont think it can be as bad as what the show did, im excited to see what martin have imagined for all this years to finally get to the climax.

  • @worldadventuretravel
    @worldadventuretravel หลายเดือนก่อน

    He should just let AI finish it at this point. Literally every year since however long it's been after the last book ASOIAF came out fan channels are like "Here it is, WOW is finally coming!!" Meanwhile GRRM has found time to do anything else but finish his main series... Fire & Blood, working on HOTD and a bunch of spinoffs, God knows what else. I would have taken ONE REALLY GOOD GAME OF THRONES SERIES from start to finish, based on actual finished book material, over every consolation spinoff show and consolation book combined. TBH I wish he had just finished Winds and Dream instead of writing Fire & Blood. He's never gonna finish this series, people. Look at the mans' physical condition-- does that look like a healthy man to you, one that's gonna live that much longer? Listen to all the vague excuse-making in his interviews-- does that sound like a guy that has any intention at all of finishing ASOIAF to you? NO. Neither thing. So we can enjoy our fan theories all we want, but we're never getting the books. At least I held off on investing all the time in reading the series to date. I saved myself the aggravation of not getting a proper ending twice instead of just suffering the destruction of the show.

    I think you have it right. Lots of doomers think he's just being lazy and not working on the book, but based on what he has said it sounds like it really is just a difficult part of the story to write because he has to find a way to start wrapping things up in two books with so much still needing resolution. I think it has been close to finished a few times, but he keeps hitting snags and has to go back and rewrite a lot. I think Winds will come by the end of 2025.

    Honestly at this point I think the only reason he's occasionally going to cons (That thing you called a podcast in October 2023 was a con in Portugal called Festival Bang, not a podcast) is because he didn't expect TWOW to take this long. And if he really refused all cons and events from 2014 onward then he'd miss out on ever interacting with any fans during the height of his fame. It made sense when he thought he was almost done, doesn't so much make sense 10 years later.
    That said I think he's almost done, since with the last two books he took a year to a year and a half to finish the last 1/4th. If he went at ADWD pace from the 1100-1200 point, he'd have finished around 550-600 more pages by now. With ADWD and AFFC he wrote way faster at the end. Course he's older now and probably writes slower and also he's clearly struggled with this book like he hasn't with the others and it also has more plotlines and it also is *the end*. So if it's not a good ending folks will say like they said with the end of the show and be like "Oh it was never leading to anything, it didn't really have anything deep going on under the hood, the characters decisions and feelings ultimately didn't matter because in the end it was nonsense". I think he really wants to avoid that, still maintaining all these hundreds of complex characters, and that's why it's taking so long.

    The best thing that could happen to ASOAIF is to remain incomplete. The obsessed fanboys with their thousand crazy theories and FanFictions will continue to feed on it for decades like a termite and some are more creative than anything George can deliver.
    With an end, these people will have to finally look for other things to fill their lives and the cultural legacy of ASOIAF will die a more natural death until eventually reaching a point similar to WoT or Elric.

    Before watching: I have given up any semblance of hope that I will ever get a true ending to the series, written by Martin. He can be offended at it as much as he wants but I am positive he will kick the bucket before that happens unless he becomes a cyborg and lives another century. I am a little optimistic when it comes to Winds though. That we will get it eventually.
    So realistically I want two things from George:
    1. Winds of Winter, completed, one or two Volumes, I dont care
    2. Background Info on what happened in the writing process, especially concerning the infamous New Years Post from 2016. 8 damned years ago! Martin was, by his own admission, confident to finish the book by the Halloween of 2015 and when that didnt happen, by the end of the year,..... 8 years ago! There has been a lot of speculation and some may be spot on (Rewriting etc) but I really want to know from author himself what took him so god damn long.
    And dont give me the George is not your bitch lecture. We arent his bitches either that owe him unconditional love and understanding and it isnt right of him to leave us in the purgatory of ignorance by not giving any really concrete updates or insights on why it takes so long to write a book in a series that he delusionally wants to expand (Dream, Dunk & Egg Stories etc). George´s update policy of leaving his readers in the dark, while flipping them the bird and acting offended any time someone snaps back is the main reason why he gets so much shit when he does his cryptic updates, that arent really updates.
