- Woodturning fail. Continuing to make christmas gifts out of wood. But this time it didn’t go as planned. Turning a live edge bowl from fire wood for the first time. And it will be a while till the next time. Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

It's happened to all of us at some point 🙃It finished up nicely, good work.
Thank you 👍😉
For a bowl that small, use your 50mm jaws if you have them, and leave more material around the mortise. Or use a tenon instead. Birch is soft and there's lots of pressure on those mortise walls. Also, work from the outside in when hollowing. Leave as much mass in the bowl as possible as you work the walls to final thickness. More center mass will help with vibration
Even if it's not perfect, that chunk of wood is better now than it was when you started. :) Thanks for the fun video, and for not giving up!
I think you could have saved it on 3:52 by taking less agressive cuts and started near the rim. When most of the wood in the middle is still there, the whole thing has more weight and needs more force to be thrown out of the chuck. A thicker wall around the mortise would have helped too. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for commenting Huschify 👍this project gave me a few lessons and I got a lot of good tips on how to do better. I have a similar piece and will try a redo some day 😃
You could have made two or three more places where the mortise was gone like the one you had. It will look like the bowl has legs.
3:33 this different sound means what.? it sounds like the tool angle is wonky. 3:48 deeper cutting equals MORE strain on the mortise. do you realize that in relation to the tool, the wood is moving slower at smaller radii. so, EASE UP on the tool, when a radius is Reducing.
That is great feedback! I of course know it spins slower but didn’t put two and two together here. It seemed to cut very smoothly all the way so I removed a lot of wood all the way. Should have bern more patient, especially nearer center. Thank you! 😃
in the future, maybe you can make your mortises Smaller; or make a tenon.
I’ll try that, I have a set of smaller jaws for the chuck. I was thinking of using a tenon, but hos would you finish and remove the tenon after?
The outside wall of the mortice was too thin - we have all done it! if you had just made a tenon it wouldn't have flown off. Also, as you hollow out the centre of the bowl it changes shape ever so slightly even if the wood is dry - I try to remember to tighten the chuck jaws periodically when there's no tailstock support. You still made a lovely bowl and every day's a school day!
Hi Paully and thank you for giving me some points. I did forget to tighten the chuck as I turned this 😬. A tenon would work better here, but how would I get the tenon off after?
@@nordicturning so there are a few things you can do. I tend to use a very simple method called a jam chuck - a piece of wood curved like the inside of your bowl and with a tenon for your chuck. I’ll send you a link but there are loads of good videos on here about removing a tenon - happy turning!

@@nordicturning I love watching Phil Anderson he removes a tenon with style 😀
Thank you so much! I just watched the video. I’m going to try this 👍 I have a identital piece of wood, so I’ll make another attempt on a live edge bowl using this tecnique and a tenon. Wish me luck 😉
Good job… but is why I only do tenons. Plus… I think a mortice makes the bowl look like it has a hole in the bottom of it.
Thank you Martin 😃 I’m also finding out the benifits of the tenon rather than mortise. And I agree it looks better. My problem has been having to shallow blanks, and also technique on handeling the tenon after. But still learning 😃
The outside of the mortise is to small and you put to much pressure on the wood while removing the wood from the inside.
I would probably to better with a more robust and deeper mortise. I didn’t feel that I put so much strain on the wood taking off that much, but you are probably right. And like David Davids cummented, the wood spins a lot slower nearer center. Thanks for you input 👍😃
Make a tenon next time, even using an extra piece of wood glued to yours if you don’t have enough material
Mortise was just not a great idea in this case
Put it on a jam chuck and re-turn the base.
Don't feel bad, mine flew into outer space!

We have days like this 🤬🤬
It’s part of the game, and the learning. But have to admit that the second time it cracket I was pretty PO’d. 🥵
