    The most soothing Sherlock Holmes portrayal. No air, no rashness. Just simple naturalness.

    Pretty darn good show. The best thing about Holmes stories and plots is the use of logic and psychology, Dog knows we need more of that these days.

      It should be based on the books, not fiction writers. Sherlock was a full blood Apache and we do not see him high on peyote in a single frame. Crap.

    This is my favorite version of Sherlock Holmes. I cannot believe directors, in his day, said Ronald lacked “star quality.” The man keeps folks watching this series because he is so natural in the role.

    Such a relief to see Watson's character portrayed as (I believe) Sir Arthur intended, not the fumbling, bumbling fool that some alleged directors believe he should be, after all, the gentleman was a decorated war hero and highly skilled Doctor, with apologies to the purists amongst us I also thought that Jude Law did an admirable effort himself too. Thank you for uploading.

    • @michaelpthompson
      @michaelpthompson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Agree entirely. Crawford's portrayal is far better than that of Nigel Bruce. That Watson makes you wonder how he ever passed medical school. Anything out of the ordinary is completely impossible and incomprehensible. Holmes proposes a novel idea and is immediately pronounced "mad."
      And Jude Law was amazing. Much closer to what Doyle obviously intended.

    • @davidcarter6475

    I just discovered Ronald Howard was the son of Leslie Howard. I can imagine it was very difficult for him to overcome people's assumptions about him and become an actor. Mr. Howard, you made the right decision. You were your own man blessed with many gifts , as good your father.

    The Sherlock Holmes character, along with Dr. Watson, are two of the most difficult characters to portray as actors. This one comes up to the top of the heap as being portrayed in an excellent fashion. The other portrayals are good, but between Ronald Howard and Basil Rathbone, this one is of the higher class. Thank you for providing this.

    Ronald Howard is a gift to the character. Marion is excellent, intelligent and very human and witty. There is so much chemistry here between them. Basil and Bruce are great but Basil is rash and treats Bruce like a bumbling fool which is too often how Bruce as Watson actually does portray making Bruce look stupid. Jeremy Brent is like a military man, snapping to and rashly charging off into the blue on a whim of investigation. I like Brent a lot, but his Watson seems to be upstaged often which takes away from the "partnership" the two men can be better appreciated if the partnership, Holmes as the logic and insight and Watson following on with medical musings and his input in that area. In this version Watson is more equal and cast as a role appropriate of his professional abilities, not a bumbling boob as other versions often do.

    So nice to see a Sherlock Holmes who is relaxed and enjoying his work, instead of a neurotic mess! I'd rather watch this series than the ones where he's brooding, angry, sarcastic and contemptuous. Can't say I like the way Dr. Watson is portrayed--like a straight man in a comedy act--but at least he's not a bumbling oaf! Also, the music is pleasant.

    Seems to me the episodes (such as the first here) written/directed by Sheldon Reynolds were the best of the 39 episodes. I also think, and others below concur, that Ronald Howard was born to be Holmes and, had he found a starring role in the '60s, e.g. Simon Templar, he might have attained 'A' picture status, with his evident humour, suaveté and good looks. It can't be easy to live in the shadow of a strikingly similar-looking actor father.

    I always watched the Basil Rathbone Sherlock ones and he is my favorite however and always will be I think he is the true essence of Sherlock.. bit I think that series is ruined by how Watson is made to be a complete bumbling idiot..I mean he is supposed to be a Dr he couldn't have been that dumb..., I stumbled across these and...overall I think these are my favorite because I love Ronald as Sherlock and I love how competent Watson is in this series! And not a complete idiot. Love love this series they make the perfect team!
