Sorry for the extensive blurred clips in this video. The BBC was very strange with this one and blocked it from the whole world without the blurred clips. Hope everyone's understands!

Sometimes, Adric came off snobby, but if you think about it, he literally had no family to be with, but still wanted to get back home by the end. It's so tragic. Also, I actually believed he was a teenager. He really does look young in the show.

yeah he was actually 18/19 at the time!

Earthshock was the first serial I ever remember watching in full and it made an impact on me; "what, people can DIE on this programme?"
Perhaps as a child I identified with Adric a little?
Anyway, glad to hear that MW is doing well for himself

I always liked Adric. I first saw Full Circle when I was about 7 and he got to join the Doctor. I was jealous. When I started watching the videos of Logopolis and other stories around that time, I was about 13, and my budding gay boy brain crushed on him hard.

We need a action figure of him

Hey ADRIC happens to be one of the most underated companions, of the WHO-Universe.. I really liked him & when the 5th Doctor remembered him, it saddened me. an emotional flashback! of all the Companions he is second.. 1st. Sarah Jane 2nd Adric 3rd K-9.

Adric was much better served during Season 18. I think most of the vitriol came from the Dr Who Appreciation Society and was due to envy. Gary Russell tried to get seen for the part, but was outed as a fanboy.

What about audio? Perhaps that has changed perceptions of Adric.

I was shocked to see Davros as a companion and thought it missed something.

Tegan whinged way more, and she literally did nothing but whinge. Her character nailed it in EarthShock when she said, "Don't mind me.. I'm just a mouth on legs." She seemed to be there solely to be a damsel in distress for the doctor to rescue for his his teen-boy fans

It would be great if they brought Adric back.
Find out he was saved at the last second and brainwashed into thinking The Doctor let him die.

don't forget the fact that he was also often siding with the bad guys (or pretending to?) - see Full Circle, State of Decay, Four To Doomsday and Kinda! His most inoffensive episode is Black Orchid as he's just there to eat chicken xD

I was a preteen when I watched classic who, and I related to Adric and liked his character

it was great Adric got a shout out in the 60th anniversary and Logopolis! The worst companion by a mile is Clara, the most annoying pointless and self righteous character on the show.

Kill off a companion and they will grow in popularity in both fiction and reality. It happens in all areas of life. Not that John Lennon was disliked but when he was terribly killed his was raised to guru saint status. Princess Diana the same but even more. If Adric (yes even a DW character) had not been killed off in the series and given that very clever silent credits ending he would still be derided as an actor today. Remember this boy, Matthew Waterhouse, was critical of other stars giving Richard Todd advice on acting. Apparntly his books on his time of DW are well written and quite engaging to read. Credit where due.
Also to be fair, he was written that way and imo the character Nyssa was worse. Adric could be annoying and a know it all sook but at least these are characteristcs. Nyssa was just plain boring. Again probably due mostly to the writers. But boring is worse than bad. Bidemad was much more into high end science than character development. For some reason Sarah Sutton never got the same derision that Waterhouse did. The only time Peter Davison made a comment I disagreed with was when he thought Nyssa should of had more on time screen presence because was best suited as a compnion for his Doctor.

I think Nyssa worked well with Davison's Doctor but only on her own as in Arc of Infinity part 1 before Tegan comes back and and the yelling resumes xD she seems quite complimentary however it may have become stale quickly had it been a full season as yeah she wasn't given much in the way of traits or development as with so many classic who companions :/ but had she not been competing for screen time as one of 3 companions and therefore stuck in the TARDIS so often to make way for the other two maybe we'd have had more focus. But yeah boring is perhaps worse than being hated haha!
I will say credit to Bidmead, he's the one who gave them lead-ins for exploration, like making Nyssa an orphan in Logopolis, thinking future writers would go somewhere with it and explore that territory but they didn't do anything with it besides mention it once in Castrovalva (also penned by Bidmead) and Four to Doomsday. The closest thing she got to any consistency was the fact she was a scientist and used these skills in stories such as The Visitation and Terminus, with her leaving to support a cause that would put her skills to good use, thus finding a new home of sorts.
Re MW, don’t forget him being hungover and vomiting over a tree! and the fact that Adric was often siding with the bad guys haha

@@dexterhill5843 Hi That is a very articulate and considered viewpoint and one I can't. It certainly was a case of too many companions. Upon reflection I can see that maybe Nyssa on her own could have worked well but because we never really got to see anything approaching a deep relationdship with the Doctor it is hard for me to visualise it. I am beginning though to see what could have been and worked. Have a great weekend.

@@triplejazzmusicisall1883 haha thank you! That's perhaps the most considerate reply anyone has ever received on YT! If you haven't seen it, the short featurette The Crowded TARDIS on the DVD for Castrovalva discusses the possibility and why the dynamic did or didn't work. I read that when Saward was shadowing Anthony Root for his post as script editor he joined during recording of Four to Doomsday and thought both Adric and Nyssa were boring and should be dropped - so that probably didn't help them! I liked the team dynamic but there were too many to juggle each week for them all to have impact on the story for sure. I think you're totally right re being risen to saint status - killing Adric off was the best thing they did for him! Hope you have a great weekend too!

It's odd to think he started out conceptually as an Artful Dodger/stowaway type character and has those moments in Full Circle and State of Decay but this was dropped pretty quick and ended up as a whiney brat for most episodes. However younger viewers at the time may have related with him to be fair!
