    something I find interesting that relates to today's lore analysis is that the omens still have the grace of gold in their eyes, which leads me to the conclusion that their oppresion is 100% ordained by Marika because they look like the hornsent and not something the greater will endorses

    I got one point of contention with the theology argument: Ranni wants the gods out of the lands between for people to figure out their shit on their own. She absolutely gets her hands horrifyingly dirty in the process but she doesn't exactly hide that

      Agree, I think her 'age of the stars' might be more agnostic than hoping to become the new god - after all, she DITCHED her body and great rune to stop being an Empyrean. And those had the sole purpose of inheriting Marika´s post. She could have done what Radahn, Malenia and co. tried to do, without sacrificing everything.
      So, claiming Ranni wants to be the new god, that is plainly false !

    In the media literacy part I would like to add that a interpretation of the Methyr quest/boss stuff say in the itens that not even the mother of all fingers had listened to the commands of the outer gods since almost ever.
    So, maybe more proof that if Marika said it was commanded by the two fingers, it meant nothing.

    • @PlatinumAltaria

      @kairu_aname 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It says that ever since she landed she has never heard the voice of the greater will.
      That also implies that the two fingers have never heard it either.
      Either it's contradictory or Marika has tricked the two fingers and grace itself is the guidance of Marika.

    • @shadoblak
      @shadoblak 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @kairu_aname Pretty sure all it says is that she used to get messages from the Greater Will but that she'd been abandoned. It doesn't give a time frame. "The Mother received signs from the Greater Will from the beyond of the microcosm. Despite being broken and abandoned, she kept waiting for another message to come"
      It DOES imply that the Two Fingers have never heard the Greater Will before though, thats correct. It says that Metyr was a middleman, so they only ever talked to Metyr.

      If we are to use dialogs as truth, or even as reference, the ymir gives us the time frame. If it is to be believed.
      Almost no npc has lied to us about the lore they find, not intentionally anyway.
      I've yet to find an exception on _that_ point.
      "I fear that you have borne witness to the whole of it. The conceits-the hypocrisy-of the world built upon the Erdtree. The follies of men. Their bitter suffering. Is there no hope for redemption? The answer, sadly, is clear. There never was any hope. *_They were each of them defective. Unhinged, from the start. Marika herself. And the fingers that guided her._* And this is what troubles me. No matter our efforts, if the roots are rotten, ...then we have little recourse."
      And further still;
      "Do you recall what I said? That Marika, and the fingers that guided her, were unsound from the start. Well, the truth lies deeper still. It is their mother who is damaged and unhinged. The fingers are but unripe children. Victims in their own right. We all need a mother, do we not? A new mother, a true mother, who will not give birth to further malady."
      Speculation, that metyr was given purpose before she landed, but afterwards she never heard from the greater will again.

    24:03 I am a Christian, and have never heard that interpretation of the third commandment, but it makes perfect sense along with all the other points he is saying

    • @Devedrus
      @Devedrus 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      There's some Biblical support for the interpretation. Notably in Jeremiah 5 there is some association of general hypocrisy with breaking the third commandment.
      The mainstream scholarly consensus though is that the commandment is associated with Oaths, a bit of a foreign concept to modern Christians. Oaths were considered highly serious, so someone making an oath could be trusted to carry out what they said. The third commandment then can be said to not use God as a means to acquire trust that you do not intend to keep or otherwise do not deserve. Which, in a more abstract way, does still support Tulok's interpretation.

    • @rebbeca5967
      @rebbeca5967 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

      In Hebrew the commandment uses the verb "תישא", carry/raise, instead of "תאמר/תגיד", say/speak.
      The name of God can be SAID, but CARRYING it might actually mean using its power to CARRY out your own will instead of God's actual will.

    • @Tattooedcameraman
      @Tattooedcameraman 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I’ve heard it every now and then and it makes sense. The point of being a Christian is to treat people with love and respect so I think the interpretation of not using Gods name to be a jerk and treat people terribly should be looked up to

    • @stickinittotheman1
      @stickinittotheman1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Indeed, an incredibly interesting talking point. Hadn't considered that interpretation; it, along with the scholarly insight above, is truly wise... And ***Based.***
      Seriously... Exploiting the name of any important figure, or even concept, is certainly a great evil.
      When it comes to Christianity, it is likely the most commonly abused.
      Speaking from a local issue I just read about. "Yes, we definitely needed 30 million dollars to add another thousand seats to our ~~arena~~ church! This money you gave us is definitely helping the less fortunate and needy..."
      Using the good will, maybe even the guilty conscience, of your neighbor, is absolutely disgusting.
      You already don't have to pay taxes... Feed and shelter some homeless people, and help the community. You're clearly getting plenty of funding.

      Consider the historical context. When was the Abrahamic god’s name invoked? Either to have Him bear witness to an oath, or to justify a course of action as serving His will. In either case, invoking the name of God in pursuit of evil action would understandably enrage him. And say what you will about God, he’s got a really short temper.

  • @CrownlessStudios
    @CrownlessStudios 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    As a Christian from a sect that takes theology a bit more seriously than megachurches, I gotta say, your interpretation of the 3rd commandment is basically spot on. It essentially says "don't speak for me." Which is why it follows immediately after 2 commandments about idols.
    The first commandment is don't worship other gods. The second commandment is don't make images of God. The third is don't pretend to be god.

We know for a fact that NONE of the factions have received any information from the Greater Will, in fact the GW seems to have given up on the world altogether. What we do know is that omens are blessed by the crucible, which seems to involve the mixing of all forms of life together. Miriel knows the truth: the GW seeks for all to be conjoined in harmony and jolly cooperation, not divided and shattered, but not melted down like the flame of frenzy either. You have to syncretise the beliefs of every faction, and then you see what the truth is.

    Plus, the church talk reminded me of the only time I ever went to church. Nearly 15 years ago, I was staying at my friend's for the weekend and his parent's wake us up at 6am on Sunday to go(I told them "I don't do church" but they drag me anyway.) we get there around quarter to 7 and we sit about and wait for the main dude to show up, and about 15-20 minutes later he rolls up in this really nice, basically brand new Mercedes.
    During the service, he talks about how we should give back to those less fortunate, help those who can give nothing back, etc. and I pipe up asking "does that include buying fancy cars, tax-free with church money"? He danced around the question for a few minutes, throwing out excuses like how "the chosen of God's flock must be able to effectively spread the word!" and other such dribble before I got fed up, yeeted a bible at him and said "one of us needs to give that a read."

    One correction about your Theocracy essay, Ranni just wants to be free from the Two Fingers and do her own thing, her ending is an afterthought for the most part. It’s kinda implied she just wanted the Golden Order out of the way. The Age of Stars seems like a thing she decides to do, maybe as an act of good after all the backstabbing. In this original translation, it’s implied she sets the races free and is basically the only one not setting up a theocracy. “Embrace the cold of the Unknown and shed the warmth of the Familiar.”

    • @trckn_151

      This is why I like Ranni's ending the most, she wants to be free from EVERYTHING. The "let me do me" and "you do you" mentality is much more relatable and refreshing vs the "my way or nothing" mentality that is shoved down our throats daily.

    • @PlatinumAltaria
      @PlatinumAltaria 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Ranni is just selfish. She killed Godwyn for her own gain and then plans to abandon the broken world her family created to fix itself while she goes on a space cruise. Elden Ring doesn't have a good ending because the world is just fundamentally broken, there is no salvation available. It's a hell of our own making.

    • @Fenikagegami
      @Fenikagegami 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@PlatinumAltaria I agree she’s selfish that was my point, she does free the Lands Between from the Golden Order, but A) this is an Afterthought, she did it on a whim, Hell she wasn’t even planning to take the Tarnished on her journey and B) this only frees them it doesn’t solve any other problem it just hands the people the agency to solve things themselves. My point was that she’s the only character not wanting a Theocracy and yeah she did do it for herself, but ironically the most selfish person of the Demigods is also the only one that actually gave people freedom. I think it’s says something about valuing freedom, that it’s inherently selfish but also if you value you freedom, you give it to others because a person who truly values freedom not only respects their own but other peoples. Ranni is still bad because she didn’t care about how many people got hurt in her quest for freedom, but she is the only Demigod not trying to impose her will upon others, and that led her to making the only moral choice after the fall of the Elden Beast

      @Fenikagegami it could be said that Ranni did enforce her own will on everyone, by taking away all the comfort that fhe order brought to many peoples (just playing devils advocate there), and Secondly, I'm not sure where you found that she decided to give everyone freedom on a whim. Throughout her entire quest she let's you know she's getting rid of the 2 fingers and bringing freedom and self agency to everyone, no matter the steps it takes. And she only decides to bring us with because she was going to go thru the scary journey of hiding the elden ring far, far away by herself. She was taking on this terrifying burden or venturing far into the unknown so rhat everyone could be free from the greater wills influence, and ultimately any other outer gods as well. She initially wasn't going to take us (or anyone) because she didn't want anyone else to have to endure that frightfullness. But once we decide to marry her, she finds comfort in the fact that we DECIDE to go with her. She doesn't invite us because she knows what this journey entails. But we decide to take this scary journey with her, to bring freedom to the people of the lands between. And while i agree she did some rlly messed up things to achieve her goals, and that her initial reason for starting this journey was a selfish reason (she didn't want to be controlled by the 2 fingers like she saw Marika was) it ultimately evolved into a more selfless motive, once she more deeply understood how everyone was controlled by the greater will after she decided to take on this journeh

      @@TubularBellsRequiem6531 I’ll address the 2nd point first: it’s more of a vibe I got, and I’m willing to admit that I misread it, that the freedom for everyone was a whim, I still think whether you’re right or I am the overall point that her more healthy valuing of Freedom ultimately creates a more moral outcome due to it leads to a respect for others freedom. Which leads to me addressing the first point: what you’ve done is introduce the Paradox of Freedom that is created when 2 beings exist near each other, that they will inevitably impose some of their Will on each other, the all rules are a form of coercion argument. Total freedom cannot exist in this context, you can only maximize freedom while trying to respect others Rights, the “The freedom to wave you hand around stops at hitting my face” principle. In this respect, she is not forcing her will on others, after all, nothing is stopping another Monarchy from being set up if Democracy is too scary. The difference is now it’s the mortals in charge not some super being like a God.

    • @cartooncritic7045
      @cartooncritic7045 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly you can look at the starting classes in Demon's Souls and the other two Dark Souls games and see that they've always given a couple classed heavy favoritism over the others. Demon's Souls Magician and Royalty are disgustingly broken from the tutorial into the endgame. The DS1 Pyromancer has the best magic type in the game by a mile and barely needs to level their stats to be overpowered. Every Souls game gives their Knight classes the best armor available to the player for a very long time, and the DS2 and 3 Knight even bothered to show up with the ideal stats for the best build types in their games. And of course Elden Ring's two "quality" classes -- the Vagabond and the Samurai -- both join with great stats, solid armor, and excellent weapons to such a degree they low-key invalidate the other melee classes almost entirely.

    Love the videos. Been a fan since the early D&D video days. The themes and lore talks have become my new favorite part. Like, rykard literally feeds himself to the god-devouring serpent because he thinks, “hmmm. I’d probably be better at murdering my enemies if I were a giant blasphemous snake man. I think I’m gonna do that.” And people pretend there’s no parallel to anything there

    I got super into Catholicism around the time Elden Ring came out, and seeing all the parallels between the game and real world religion was fascinating to me.
    Marika/Radagon/Elden Beast being Son/Father/Holy Spirit was the most obvious piece of allegory to me, and then all the "Graces" (which is a gift from God) stood out too. Really appreciate your religion rant.

    That tangent rant about light armor and endurance around the 12 minute mark is exactly how I feel, like a lot of the lighter armors look nice sure, but the stamina stat also boosting your carry weight just makes it feel like your incentivized to go for the top 2 highest weight categories of armor by inherent design making those lighter armors feel like they become quickly pointless and there are so many of them too by comparison.

    I made an interesting Elden Ring discovery today, a slightly faster way to get the Somber 5 and 6. After exiting the prison town church you run past the snake onto the roof. Turn left at the hollow and drop down onto the ledge with the broken stairs that leads to the pot area. Jump over the broken stairs and grab the Rune Arc and look slightly to the left. You should be able to see the land below the Guest Hall site of grace door and ladder with the fire slugs. Either use Quickstep or just walk across, lava does almost no damage in this game.
    You can't open the door from this side but you can make a very easy jump to the balcony with the snake if you really want to get the grace.

    at about 11:15, you inquire on the availability of rod and/or hole while donning a suit of armor like this, and I can confidently say that if there's a segmented waist section to the whole harness that you can kind of just pull down trow and there you go. the leg armor as a whole are actually one of the parts that can be put on without any assistance so taking those off isn't of much issue either.
    since the overall set is designed for mounted cavalry exclusively, there's no groin protection to really take off. with this I can say with pride that tree sentinels can not only poop and pee, they can plow and get plowed.
