    It always amazes me when people are able to speak 2 or more languages. In the US, most people speak English and nothing else. I know a little French and a little Spanish - but not enough to read a book - maybe a menu or an ad or something. Good video! But I would like to hear you speak Swedish.

    • @ellenmadebookclub

      A little is a good place to start! 😊 I had English classes since first grade and then Spanish from 6th grade, and then I continued studying language as my “major” in high school, because I really like it 😊 I have always liked learning languages.
      I would have liked to speak Swedish in the video too, but I find myself speaking so unnaturally for some reason! I get a weird accent and talk like I’m speaking to someone who doesn’t know Swedish very well 😂 it’s super weird. Some time I’ll include some Swedish when I sound like myself 😄

    I am always legitimately so impressed by people who can speak fluently in second or third languages. I was learning German for I think two years. I took a break but I am getting back into it this summer so that I don't forget what I already learned! I have really enjoyed learning the language but it's a lot to train your brain. I have thought before about what it would be like to have a channel in another language. To not only be able to speak enough for general content but to also know enough words on a specific topic (like books or reading!).... it's impressive!!
    And I'm so glad that we found each other's channels!!

    • @ellenmadebookclub
      @ellenmadebookclub  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much, that warms my heart! I love learning languages, I took German as well for one or two years, can't remember. It's very similar to Swedish (as well as parts of English) and very easy to learn to a certain point, and then all of a sudden it gets really difficult! 😅 I only took that because I had to choose another language, and I didn't want to confuse my Spanish with French or Italian, and Mandarin seemed too difficult haha! So German it was. Didn't stick very well for me as you can imagine haha!
      It's so fun though, so definitely the right choice going back to keep it going!
      Me too! I love that we can watch each others' videos and chat in the comments and it's like we hung out for a little bit ^^ 💜

      @@ellenmadebookclub I took Spanish for two years in high school. I don't remember a whole lot, but it's interesting that when I started learning German, Spanish words started sneaking in too. And then I was so confused trying to think about which language I was trying to think of. 🤣 I really like German, though, and I really do want to keep learning more. I didn't realize that Swedish is a similar language!!

      @ellenmadebookclub  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BonnieNicoleWrites Haha yeah I know what you mean, I’ve had that happen too.
      Yes a lot of the words are similar, kind of like house is haus I think and in Swedish it’s hus. But the structure is different, putting the verb last and all that, we don’t do that ^^

    • @BonnieNicoleWrites
      @BonnieNicoleWrites หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ellenmadebookclub It definitely took a lot of getting used to putting the verb last! But it's so cool how grammar works in other languages!

      @@BonnieNicoleWrites True! My dad used to tell this story about an interpreter in the UN or something where they had this huge conference and he was interpreting from German, and the German guy just kept on talking and talking and then you could hear the interpreter trying to whisper to him in complete panic "Give me the f-ing veerrb!!!" 😂

    I love the train honks 😂 I love the change of scenery! I would have never known that English is not one of your native language 😲!! I live in the US so I have to use English constantly but I'm pretty sure my speaking English is worse than yours 💀 I think you're so good at articulating your thoughts! Also SAAAME. I leave such long comments because I love talking (blabber mouth here) 😅 I'll be sure to check out the youtubers you've mentioned!

    • @ellenmadebookclub
      @ellenmadebookclub  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha thank you for your kind words 😊 I would never have guessed English wasn’t your first language either, what is it then? This was one of my points in the long discussion I cut out haha that the definition of an “international booktuber” is based on what language they speak, it’s so weird 😂 So many people are immigrants and have other first languages or live in a country where English is spoken because of colonialism, so which one of those is international..? So weird.
      Thank you so much for being here Mimi, I always love your long comments! Makes me feel less weird for ranting all over the internet haha and I appreciate hearing your thoughts too obviously 😂 🚂

    • @itsmimiduong
      @itsmimiduong หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ellenmadebookclub Yess! I think English is more of a connecting language than anything. So many people speak it with different variations in tones, and usage. English is actually my second language! Vietnamese is my first but now I feel like I'm not good at either of them since I don't have much usage for Vietnamese outside my family conversations 😩
      And of course!! I love your videos, and the book recommendations. I'm here for expanding my reading depth 🧡Your video is so calming and relaxing. It's always a good place to sit down and watch when I'm trying to take a break from work hehe

    • @ellenmadebookclub
      @ellenmadebookclub  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@itsmimiduong I agree! I think that’s a benefit of speaking it as a second language, having that outside perspective. It’s like knowing a code to communicate with so many different people, and maybe first language English speakers (?! You know what I mean haha) take that for granted, or fail to appreciate what a resource it is. Not all, but many.
      I’m so glad to have learned that about you. I hope you find more ways to use your first language, that’s a really special part of our identity and bond to ancestors or like, the people that came before us and went through their struggles. I find myself thinking in English sometimes and I know that’s not the same, but I get how important your first language is.
      Oh I love that! Thank you so much, what an honor to be a part of your break time. That is precious!

      Oh me too, it’s been so lovely talking to you! 😊💜
      And no rush on the tag, like I said I was tagged weeks ago! And you’re not behind, you’re doing it at the pace that works for you, and that varies, so it’s all good! We are not an algorithm, an algorithm can’t take a trip to Spain 😊

      @@ellenmadebookclub Ahah no worries ^^ I'd like to watch some Swedish booktube, but I'm struggling to find channels at all (and then, ones that I like).
      I'm behind in the sense that I have several videos tied to May or early June (even April!!! - the This or That video you tagged me one - it's filmed, just not edited yet, but it's coming), so I want to publish them asap. And then, I have a pipeline of stuff that will feel already pretty "old" to me when it gets published XD Like the Write for Life wrap-up or if I publish my vacation vlogs 1.5 months after I actually came home XD It's really not a big deal, it's not self-imposed pressure, just that I'm eager to publish them and share them with people, so I'm a bit impatient ^^

      Thank you Pat! I’m glad to hear that, I figured it would be kind of boring to most people, so that means a lot! 😊
      I had English classes since first grade, it was kind of an experiment, but most kids in Sweden have English class from 3rd grade. Not everyone has a mind or interest for it, but I have always liked learning languages and chosen it whenever I could. And lots of literature at university is in English too, so even if I didn’t study it there, it was still a big part of whatever I studied.

      @@ellenmadebookclub I am often impressed by how well people in Europe speak English, but your English is exceptional. Yes, you have the advantage of already knowing a worldwide language, so it would definitely be smart to add other ones. If nothing else to gain understanding for what it’s like for the rest of us 😂 And it’s so much fun! A great insight into other cultures, when you start learning expressions and jokes and so on, it’s like poetry in itself.

      @@ellenmadebookclub absolutely! I did learn another language and even minored in it in college. I was once able to speak, read, and write in Spanish. I was semi-fluent, but nowhere near the level that you are in English. Sadly, my use of Spanish waned over the many years since I was in college. You do lose what you don’t use.

    • @ellenmadebookclub
      @ellenmadebookclub  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BookChatWithPat8668 Yes I’m not as fluent in Spanish as I used to be either. I was never completely fluent but I could sort of have a conversation 😅 but it comes back to you quicker when you’ve learned it once before. I really want to keep what I learned in Spanish to, not sure exactly how, but reading easier books might be one way. And watching movies and TH-cam videos in Spanish is good as well, I love Almodóvar’s films and Pan’s Labyrinth which is also in Spanish 😊 it’s nice just to listen to and imagine you’re enjoying some nice tapas!
