The thing to know about Watts and Watts Towers is that the community grew up around a rail junction for the Pacific Electric system that sprawled across the LA Basin before the Freeways. That interurban trolley service, one part still used by the "Blue Line" through Watts Junction had as it fastest service the line from LA to Santa Ana that branched at the junction. Remains of that right of way should be very easy to spot from the air, and as I recall the Watts Towers were built very close to the junction. Parts of that right of way have been blocked since the end of service in 1954, two years before my family moved to Santa Ana from the East. Knowing the railroad history of Southern California could be of help in understanding why certain parts are where they are today. From Long Beach those PE Red Cars also went as far as the pavilion still on Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. You are familiar with most of the coast. Sunset Beach was on that line, and Huntington beach was named for Henry Huntington who built the Pacific Electric system, once the largest trolley network in the world.
Awesome, as always! Thanks so much for sharing the best of SoCal with the world! Just a few ideas for future videos: 1. Wilshire from downtown to the ocean 2. Malibu and Malibu Canyon (which hides the bizarre Rindge Dam that no one can see from the road) 3. Sepulveda Blvd. from one end to the other Even if you can’t get these, much appreciation for your flying and driving videos!
The Watts Towers were constructed by an Italian immigrant Sabato (Simon) Rodia over a 34 yr span. Of course that was one of the places besides the library that my grandmother took me when I came to California. Quite impressive.
A longtime friend of mine lives across the street from them. Glad that L.A. preserves, and respects these iconic landmarks. Now if they would open a George Washington Carver Museum, that would be a terrific point of pride for the community as well.
Fun fact, those buildings right next to the Galaxy stadium are Cal State Dominguez Hills. Not the most flashy or glamorous college campus, but a real school!
petbytes OHHHHHH YEAH, L.A. most CERTAINLY DOES have large train yards: Port of L.A., Union Staion, City of Industry, and most notably, City of Commerce(which is the main gateway of L.A.)
@Va Sr right next to the Watts Towers are three main train lines, clearly visible from higher up see Google maps satellite view maps.app.goo.gl/TviJZcuppSpiVn2H9
Lynwood was known as the all American city, great j.cs. my dad help build John Hamm park back in the 1960s,it was a fun place to grow up and live!!! Thank you uncle bid .
"The Galaxy plays soccer, so that's the round ball... ". Dude, you " quack" me up. I lived in LB 1980-1987, had a great time. Still visit friends near CSULB a couple times a year. Mostly when it the dark, grey, wet part of the Seattle year. Really enjoy your Air Tours over the entire basin.
Yessss! No, that's all that's in Watts. The towers are being renovated like you said. They've been covered for a few months. Great flyover. I live in Willowbrook which is close by.
Much love to you from OK, thank you for giving CA some loving. You are indeed one of the best. Salute to you from an FAA spouse. Live free and fly free. Keeping the dream alive in the sky.
If you ever get over to Riverside, I’d love to see you do the Mission Inn, Downtown Riverside area, Mt. Rubidoux, Fairmount Park and UC Riverside. (All close to each other.)
OK you are bringing back memories. When I came to California in 1972 I lived with my grandmother in Watts. I had just graduated from high school. I have friends in Compton and I use to visit Cal State Dominguez to bike ride, play tennis and walk around the track. I've gone to the soccer stadium for sporting events. Such wonderful memories.
I have been watching your flying videos over the last 4 months, and I have to say, that this one (for me) is the best one yet., the views of the plane museum was awesome, thanks for putting this together.
I want to see you fly over LA, Orange, and Ventura county beaches again. Lots of memories there. Thanks for all of your flights, they're very popular with my friends.
Stay up there for a few more minutes and you're bound to find a high speed pursuit. Seems to be a couple a day lately. Maybe, find Hawkins' House of Burgers, too. Killer!
Straight out of Compton, straight back to longbeach!!!! Great videos ,I grew up in Lynwood & went straight back to Placerville can . God bless you and yours. Love devo.
My name is Lynn and I Love your videos, I grew up in Lakewood, Ca but now live in Utah. Could you fly around the city if Lakewood? Specifically around Woodruff and Candlewood, then Lakewood High? Thanks!! Keep up the great work!
You mention how awesome air traffic controllers are...I think pilots are pretty awesome as well. Thank you for the beautiful footage. I live in Oregon but have family all over Southern California. It's fun to see the names of places and streets that I've heard of or been to before. Stay safe and please keep the videos coming!🚁😁
Micah, can you fly over the blimp hangers in Tustin, part of the old Tustin Air Base and then over the Orange Country Great Park and what’s left of the El Toro Air Base?
MIcah, I'd love to see my ol' stompin' grounds of Simi Valley, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks sometime, if you can. And THANKS for all the wonderful views!
Hey Micah Muzio .. any time you can fly by wilmintong Sulphur plant is the big yellow mountains you can see from above . located 2250 E pacific Coast highway... thanks.
How nostalgic, I went to Whaley Jr. high before it became a middle school. Your videos are great! Try flying over Kaiser, Downey Promenade, Columbia Memorial Space Center, and Independence Park. There is a draped over space shuttle on the north side of the park, next to the fire tower. That area is historic for the contributions to space programs.
This is so cool! Love the 40' concrete donut on the roof of Dale's. The Watts Towers are a collection of 17 interconnected sculptural towers designed and built solely by Sabato "Simon" Rodia. Simon was an Italian immigrant construction worker and tile mason. (Wiki) Thanks for the history lesson Micah!
You just flew over Imperial Hwy. You could fly the length of Imperial Hwy from Isadore B. Dockweiler State Beach to the Santa Ana River. Although it may be more interesting to drive.
Micah can you do a flyover of automotive places in socal? Like the American Honda HQ, Porsche center, Former Toyota HQ, papadakis Racing, Fifteen52/ mountune, Motortrend, EDMUNDS!!!, Hyundai's North american HQ, Mazda, Kia, etc?
0:20 off the the right edge is the VELO Sports Center indoor velodrome (track bike racing). Too bad the tore down the old outdoor 1984 Olympic Velodrome though to build the Galaxy stadium.
How about flying over the closed Reagan Library? Courious to see what Air Force 1 & Marine 1 would look like through the tall glass walls. The F-117 & F-14 outside would be cool to see from the air too.
That was great and I especially liked seeing the LA downtown at the end. I'd like to see a flight up the San Fernando Valley, around Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and back. Not sure if that's too far for you?
Would really like to see the Frank Gehry campus for Loyola University completed in the 1980's. Or, if possible, the view along Venice beach where he did some interesting private houses and the Chiat/Day advertising agency.
Was wondering if you could fly over the LA Rams new stadium in Inglewood...the forum and roscoes chicken and waffles...all in Inglewood...thanks...love the videos
How about heading to Hacienda Heights/City of Industry and fly over the Puente Hills Mall where they filmed Back to the Future. From there, you could fly over the Buddhist Temple and Whittier.
I'd like to see my hometown of Downey. Home of the world's oldest operating McDonald's. Filming location of ''Karate Kid" Golf N Stuff scene. The Columbia Memorial Space Center as well as the former home of the NAA Facility which built the Space Shuttles & Apollo Space Capsules that went to the moon. Hometown of The Carpenters singing duo and James Hetfield of Metallica.
I grew up in the Compton area. My brothers went to Whaley. Does anyone know if the Compton Drive in is still there? We used to watch movies fro Stephen Foster Elementary.
That’s for giving some love to all parts of Cali. That’s why you’re one of the best.
Thank you for flying over Compton! I grew up there, so this video made me cry.
You were "Straight up From Compton".
😂

I'm really happy I can share these flights. Cheers!
Based on your flight path on FR24 during your last flight, you literally flew directly over the house I used to live in in San Marino.
funny you mention the old hood you lived in, I too could almost see the pad I had over by the pier off Venice Beach..a block away. Fun eh?
Love your videos. Could you please fly over the old M.A.S.H. tv filming site and land on the upper pad where the helicopters landed in the show?
I have been watching your flying videos over the last 4 months, and I have to say, that this one (for me) is the best one yet., the views of the plane museum was awesome, thanks for putting this together.

Stay up there for a few more minutes and you're bound to find a high speed pursuit. Seems to be a couple a day lately. Maybe, find Hawkins' House of Burgers, too. Killer!

Reading this three years later, post Covid, and we have a pursuit in the L.A. area almost every few days.

I've always found the Watts Towers very sinister looking. But thank you for the great video. Nothing like LA at sunset
Hello. I'm new to your channel and love it. Can you do a fly over of the length of Imperial HY or maybe whittier blvd? From one end to the other?
Great shots, (a bit of glare) and a lot more varied and frankly, pleasantly dense suburban than expected.
7:10 looks like some of the baseball fields I grew up playing on. Thanks Micah and Evie:)
I would like to see Laguna Beach up the 133 to the 241 to Dove Canyon, and Coto De Caza.
