I am breezing through the Mrs. Pollifax series. I love it!
My most surprising book so far would have to be The Bee Sting. I had a lot of trepidation about reading it based on the size of it and the premise just didn't sound all that interesting. But read it for a book prize and really got sucked in!
I LOVED the Spymisstress! Chiaverini is one of my fave authors. I learn so much from her historical fiction bks. BECAUSE there are so many true facts.
My biggest surprise this year was James by Percival Everett. From what I had seen I thought this would be a humorous retelling of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn but it was so much more…it was funny, intelligent, and thoughtful. I loved it!
Olivetti is AMAZING. I just finished it TONIGHT and it's awesome. I bought it from the cover alone.
I did love Dear Henry, Love Edith. I loved that they were so very flawed and it didn't follow the usual "get together and DONE" thing. Plus epi-pen. LOL
I think how much I loved and connected with the Barset books is possibly one of my biggest surprises right now. We'll see. I don't remember what I answered on my tab but right now this minute, that's what coming to mind. LOL
The Year I Flew Away by Marie Arnold was a nice surprise for me. Middle grade about Haitian immigrant wanting to fit it to her new surroundings. Has magical realism, heart warming moments and a great lesson in appreciating who you are and where you come from.
Thank you for the in-depth look at Diane Chamberlain’s book. It is because of your deep description that I have added it to my TBR wish list.
My most surprising book was In the Field of Grace by Tessa Afshar. It is Christian Fiction and covers the lives of Ruth and Boaz. I didn’t know what to expect, but this book helped me walk along side Ruth as she grew to know, and love, our God.
My biggest surprise read was The Boys in the Boat. I was visiting my sister and had two books I planned to read during my visit that I was really looking forward to digging into. When I arrived she suggested I read The Boys in the Boat and join her for their book club discussing it in a few days. I somewhat reluctantly agreed but I’m so glad I did because it’s one of my top two favorites so far this year. My other favorite being The Frozen River. They are completely different from each other, but both fantastic in their own ways.
I completely agree with Dear Henry. It was not at all what I expected.
Rain Reign was so good! Such a beautiful story. I loved it! 💜😭
My biggest surprise this year was The Princess Protection Program (middle grade.) I loved it and I still haven't heard anyone talk about it. I also discovered a new favorite author, Abby Jimenez. I was surprised at how much I loved her Part of Your World series.
Yeah a Krista video to enjoy with my glass of wine tonight.
I'm so happy you loved Percy Jackson!! Can't wait to see what you think of the remainder of the series if you keep reading 😊
All of Rock Riordan's book series are great. My daughter and I read them in tandem and the audiobooks are really good.
I loved Olivetti! One of my favorite middle grades this year. It touches on some pretty heavy topics but it was SO good. I gave it five stars! Highly recommend!!
I read Al Capone Does My Shirts as a buddy read with my youngest granddaughter. I really liked it and she liked it so much read the other 2 by the end of the same week. I just told her GG is old and does everything slower these days but I will catch up. LOL. That last question about what do you want to read by the end of the year!!! You had the correct answer.
My biggest surprise was Murder Road by Simone St. James. I have like others by her, but found this one to be very slow.
One that really quite surprised me this year was Thunderclap by Laura Cumming. It was on the Women's Prize for Nonficition longlist this year. A tale of a 17th century Dutch artist I'd never heard of (stick with me here) and the author's artist father. I was unsure about my level of interest, but intrigued enough to wait and get a physical copy from my library to read along with an audio I'd also borrowed - because I new there were some pictures of the art works discussed, it's well illustrated. Well this book was so fabulous I ended up ordering a copy online (as well as one of her older books too). I was actually particularly moved by this book, not quite to tears, but my eyes became bleary.
I think the two books that surprised me thus far in 2024 are Charm City Rocks by Matthew Norman and The Good Part by Sophie Cousens. These authors were both new to me. The first book is romance fiction and features mature adults and, since I don't read much romance written by men, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. (I'm betting that bookstores have this book shelved in general fiction, though.) The second book caught me off guard because, although I've heard of Sophie Cousens and have a couple of books of hers on my shelves, I didn't expect to enjoy her so much. In fact, I thought The Good Part was so funny in places that I was checking to see if the author's name was a pseudonym for Sophie Kinsella. The humor is very similar. I'm glad I found another writer in her same lane to enjoy.
KRISTA BE JAMMIN’ also your hair looks so amazing!
The Yellow Wife surprised me. I think it surprised me because I did not expect it to be so brutal. Based on the cover, I thought it would be more “fluffy” for lack of another word. I did not expect the story to be so real. It is such a good book and has stuck with me. Again, based on the cover, I did not think I would like it as much as I did.
Two books this year really surprised me. A Long Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott and The Anomaly by Michael Rutger. Neither of them had high ratings but I was interested enough to want to read them and loved them both.
I, too, was disappointed by Jennifer Chiaverrinni's historical fiction. But, I love the entire Elm Creek Quilt series. There are several HF included in that series, but there is always a great story as well. I highly recommend all the Elm Creek books.
I loved “The Lightning Thief”.
My most surprising book is my current read The Best Life Book Club by Sheila Roberts. Thanks for the tag!
Mrs. Pollifax is also an old movie. It’s cute.
I recently reread Tolstoy and the Purple Chair....great read!
My fav book was Being Henry The Fonz and Beyond
I loved Olivetti ❤
Freak out fits simply because everyone says they cannot believe that we are half way through the year.😂
You look really good in this video. I loved, loved, loved The Last House on the Street. the Bet Book of the Year so far was either The Women or Hum If You Don't Know The Words. The Best Sequel was the same s Sarah's, The Happy-Ever-After Playlist. My Biggest Surprise was The Measure., since it is not my usual genre and my biggest disappointment is what I'm currently reading, Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate, but in case it redeems itself in the few hours remaining, then I'dsay Natchez Burning byGre4g Iles.
I really loved Olivetti, so I hope you do too!
I LOVE Al Capone Does my Shirts! The sister is autistic and it's never given a name because at that time there was no official autism diagnosis. I read this at a therapeutic day school for students with high support needs due to autism and emotional disabilities. I never told my students about the sister's autism- I wanted to see if they would figure it out. Pretty early one, one of my students said. "She sounds just like me."
Hi Krista! I’m enjoying your podcast. Have your every read any Lynn Austin historical fiction books? I’m reading her newest book All My Secrets.💕📚
I think you would love The Labors of Hercules Beal by Gary Schmidt!
Dear Henry Love Edith 🙈 we share the same disappointment, friend!
Ooh can’t wait to see your top 5!
I still need to film it!
@@BooksAndJams haha I get it!
I think you would enjoy Love Overboard. Christian, mystery cozy. Senior sleuths who solve the mystery and have matchmaking missions. Several lol moments.
So excited to see a Krista video this morning 😀
I really loved Olivetti! And I read Tolstoy and the Purple Chair many years ago and really loved it too.
My biggest surprise book this year was The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn. I have to preface I’m not a baseball fan at all, but this book is about the Brooklyn Dodgers of the early 1950’s, before the move to CA. They were my late husband’s favorite team when he was a little boy, and I can’t remember where I found this book but it was after he had passed away and I bought it because of his love for that team. It would have been a book I bought for him for sure. So I’ve had it on my shelf for several years and this year I’m doing a read it or unhaul by the end of the year and I put this book in that project. I read it last month and I loved it. Complete surprise because I didn’t expect to even like it. Just goes to show you never know😊
I'm reading Vera Wong... right now. Really enjoying it so far but I kinda went "hmmmm" when they described her as an old woman probably in her sixties. First time I thought of myself as an old woman. LOL.
I think the book that was the most unexpected hit for me was Cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez. Magical realism, family dynamics at the forefront-it was wonderful!
Krista! This was wonderful. I want to read something by Amy Harmon now and The Frozen River. ❤
I love hearing your answers to this tag!!
Perhaps my most surprising book this year was Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. I did not expect it to be so compelling that i finished it within 2 days; its in my top 3 books of the year for sure!
Do you think Al Capone Does my Shirts would be appropriate for fifth grade? I’m always on the lookout for books I can read with my class.
The Lightening Thief is a favorite of mine💜
I think a friend of mine used to teach this one with her 6th graders, so it’s probably fine for 5th.
@@deetee8100 thank you!
