    5:06 - No because not every one have a specific object to scan, not every model exist in our world such as monster characters etc. and still those scanned models need to be optimised for gamedev

    With the invention of the camera, painters didn't give up their palettes and canvases, did they? Similarly, I think 3d scanner will make the same contribution to CGI, just as photography changes the way of seeing and contributes to the art of painting (It was possible to record movements that were too fast for the eye to follow thanks to camera and photos: For example, thanks to a series of photographs taken by the Englishman Eadweard Muybridge, it became clear that the leg movements of horses depicted up to that time were incorrectly drawn) 📷🔄🎨

      Soet of....Everything that is at all functional was replaced by cameras. Painting is only done sort of for fun now.....likely not even 0.0001% of portraits or landscape images are painted, but its misleading to only say this...
      ....vecause it isn't so much that artists were replaced with cameras as cameras just _expanded_ the ability to make portraits or other images to the general public, whereas before only the wealthiest people could afford it.
      However, even amongst the wealthy, as soon as cameras overtook paintings in terms for quality, they probably did replace 99% of it in terms of 'commercial'/functional/done for payment) use.
      There's still one more aspect though....non-commercial/functional (i.e. personal) use in painting is bigger than ever as a percentage of population, but that's only because modern chemistry and energy has made pigments super cheap...if that wasn't the case, painting today might be a very rare art form indeed....at least in comparison due to the costs.
      I think 3D modeling as it is today would still exist, but only as a niche or hobby. All studios would switch completely to the most efficient option.

      Let's say you wanted a scene with a table with a bowl on top containing bunch of fruit, how long would it take to 3d model that from scratch? With this device it would take minutes. Also I have many sculptures I have made for animation that I can now turn into 3d models, again in a matter of minutes. Sign me up!

    • @JamesSmullins
      @JamesSmullins ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spockboy how many different bowls, tables and other items are you going buy to scan? Those are better off modeled so there's variety. Sure you can scan fruit but even then how often are you going to use that fruit?
      Modeling means it's always different and you don't have to have the object in the house. And if you want to scan larger more complex objects like cars, trees, buildings it's not going to work and if something does exist that can do that it's going to be extremely cost prohibitive.

    • @ragnarhrodgarson1952
      @ragnarhrodgarson1952 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spockboy and what do you want to prof with that now? all you do is suport my argument, XD because yeah tables and Fruits are something that exist, and that is what I have said you only can scan what already exist, and the sculptures are also done by you so that they exist ,right? ^^
      but what do you want to do with this when you would have to create something that don't exist, let's say someone has come up with his own fantasy setting with really unique looking creatures, and he wants a model of a goblin, but the goblins in his world are looking like nothing you could scan, then you would have to 3D sculpt or model it ^^

      that's a good comparison, only objection I think is that 3D modelling might also be replaced with real life sculpting/claying in combination with a 3D scanner, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen as 3D modelling might be easier then sculpting/claying assets of similar quality but I'm not sure.

    considering they model look like they're melting.. I dont think it'll be replacing 3d modeling :) although not a bad starting point for a simple re topology or for when the model is just used for background stuff in vfx I suppose.

    • @ChillieGaming

      Reality capture provides better result than this
      You just need to move close and take close up
      Then do retopo in zbrush and make the model sharp along edges.
      Bring the poly count down to 1k to 20k depending on the object.
      And make it smooth.

Besides, i decided to choose game design because I like working on the projects myself, i don't need some software to do it for me. What's the fun in that? Although, 3d scanned textures is something else, because those are (mostly) flat surfaces and therefore it works perfectly. But then i still use software such as Substance Painter to texture my models myself. Much more fun.

    It won't kill 3d modelling, or at least not stylized 3d. We can't scan carton characters yet.

    You would probably get better results without using the turn table. That's because the lighting in the room will never be even and the specular highlight in real life moves along the object as it rotates.

      For capturing textures yes, but for just getting the deformation of the model not sure it makes a difference..

    Yes it's interesting technology. But I could say that it's nothing there to be scary of because if you need to create something like jewelry piece which doesn't exist in real world. You have to model it from scratch and especially if it's for manufacturing I mean for 3d printing, without human it's not possible. And of course you need to clean up scaned models to prepare good topology and uv sets

    I love to hear about a new investment in 3D scanning. However, no, 3D scanning ultimately will not replace manual 3D modeling in the near future. Unless you can somehow perfectly 3D scan hair without the need to cut it off and replace it with hair particles.
