    17:50 If the Schenkens knew this was the last hand, and their only chance to win the match was by setting their opponents, then why not double? Then they win the match by putting them down two instead of three.

    Wow, I’m shocked they don’t play transfers over 1NT. Anyone know the history of that bid?

      1960 - bidding theory had introduced transfers in the 1950's (Oswald Jacoby) but transfers were still considered the realm of the experts when this was filmed. The average rubber and duplicate player would not have had them on their convention card until years later. Of course transfers are a superior method and have been considered standard for decades.

    Why not an opening bid of 2C? This Goeing?

      Yes Goren 1960. Not 2C because 23 HCP but 4 losers. 2C followed by 2NT would show even more HCP. In those days the standard 2NT values were higher hence the bidding was correct for the time.
