We were out in the middle of nowhere and didn't see any other ships in the area while we were conducting the ceremony. The Kidd (DD-661) did not have the Jolly Roger painted on the forward stack, they had William Kidd in his tri corner hat and cape. We also had it painted on our forward stack (DDG-993). Not sure if (DDG-100) has it on their forward stack, I didn't see it in this video. Looks like they do have the anchor painted gold for 100% retention. BZ!
I knew a bunch of EOD cats who liked to fly a variant of the Jolly Roger with a crab (EOD badge) on it. EOD used to have an unofficial motto of Initial ‘Success or Total failure’ and it was on everything at the schoolhouse to our coins. Someone got upset about it though after her husband got killed in action and misconstrued the meaning to be demeaning to her late husband. Navy runs the school, and the brass caved to the pressure and the motto was removed. I mean no disrespect to her or her husband, but at the end of the day, I never found an actual tech that took issue with the motto and it shouldn’t have changed anything. Good on the Kidd’s captain for upholding a tradition. I’m sure the crew appreciated it as well.

I remember when they took a picture of a sniper platoon holding a "Nazi SS" flag. The photo was circulated in black an white so you wouldn't know it was a blue sky with double white lightning bolts in the shape of 2 S's. The double lightning bolt was also our map symbol.
For my money, 2nd coolest battle flag in the fleet. I am a little beast to USS Cowpens because she was my ship. We flew a black flag with a white "Texas longhorn" in the middle. Battle flags are so cool!

Kidd was also a DDG class hull numbers 993, 994, 995 and 996. Originally prepaid and built for Iran in the late seventies. Iran had a violent change in government. Our government said screw you we will keep these ships and your money have a nice day. We added them to our fleet upon completion. Only reason I know this is I spent a little time on USS Callaghan DDG-994.
This ship I believe was named after Rear Admiral Issac Campbell Kidd who was killed on the bridge of the battleship Arizona, was the highest ranking military fatality at pearl Harbor, and the US navy flag officer to be killed in world war two. Rest in peace sir.

My ship/boat never rendered colors to anyone. That was our tradition. We were always at war when we left port. We had enough nukes to strip the entire planet of its atmosphere. To Capt Lear, our countries greatest sub captain. To USS Alaska veterans and current crew, much respect!! So much service, so much silence. So many amazing things no one will know about.

The VF 17 used the Jolly Roger on the noses of their F4U Corsairs, VF 86, and others have done the same
VF-84 inherited it, see Final Countdown movie, and it is now VF-103 carries the emblem.

I'm not a historian, but I think there was a Jolly Roger F-14 squadron...painted on the tails.

i hope they give all ships called kidd the exception and allowed to fly the jolly roger as it is a tradition started with the fletcher class uss kidd.
