    This is like "drunken fist" metal. It has this kind of "stumbling" effect with the shifting time signatures and riffs. It disorients you, and then out of nowhere it punches you in the face, revealing that it is actually highly coordinated and that the "stumbling" act was part of the plan. It's really clever. There's lots of other ambient and melodic stuff going on that really contrasts well with the shocking punchiness.

    Also as far as the tuning goes Geebz, they use a digitech whammy DT which allows them to drop even lower from tunings like Drop F and Drop E all the way down to say double Drop C and B which is just so kickass and can be triggered by midi switches in the DAW. Okay enough fanboying from me

      @grimecube 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This reminds me of a chat I had with Brand of Sacrifice's guitarist. Those familiar with their work will know they make these crazy screechy noises with the guitars. To get that sound, they also use a whammy effect to take a note up by two octaves. The effect is applied automatically when they play gigs, no idea how that works but it's cool as hell.

    Thanks for the video Geebz. I think your first word, “menacing”, encapsulates their sound.
    I think of vildhjarta as “ambient djent” (yes, I know the term thall). I find their use of space between notes and the ambient synth/pads in the back to really create a huge almost peaceful sound scape. This juxtaposed with the tone, guitar tuning, and vocals make for a really interesting listen. The last thing that I find compelling in their music is the lack of structure. In my minds eye, I see someone walking through the Labyrinth- dark, mysterious, twisting, unknown.
    Listening to this album is demanding, but they payoff is huge! Highly recommend checking it out.

    Hey Jeebz, this album is really incredible but it's an 80 minute journey that DEMANDS a front to back listen to truly understand. It also helps if you're familiar with their previous albums because there are LOTS of miniriffs and callbacks that tie the albums together. This song is good but it's weird because by the time it comes up on the album, the album has had time to establish all the weird rhythms and tones you're hearing. The opening track is actually pretty straightforward and instrumental. I highly reccomend listening to the whole thing in one go if you can.

      TRUE.
      legit, as someone who has been listening to Vildhjarta since Omnislash, when Masstaden Nationalsang (Under Vatten) started blasting out that medley of riffs as it summersaulted through the entire Masstaden album, i legit was about to cry. a massive nostalgia attack.

    When I first heard this song (And the whole album), I immediately loved it, then I began to become obsessed with it, and now I think Vildhjarta can do no wrong. You said it man. It's in these tones, because the guitar parts can stay simple and I'm still so invested. I think it's just because the over all timbre of this album. They produced the hell out of it.

    This was my favorite new album of the last 5 years at least. I can never listen to just one track, I always listen to the entire album straight. It's tough for single tracks because ... "track number" means nothing to these guys. But if you do another track by these guys, consider Kaos2, Toxic, or Måsstadens Nationalsång (Under Vatten).

      Actually 'Vild' + 'hjärta' would be swedish for it, but they went with an A instead of Ä (It is like saying the “ay” in “say”), so the pronounciation you're describing is correct but 'hjarta' is not actually a swedish word. Play on words

    To your question what they tune to. They usually use a weird drop tuning on mostly 7 strings, but they also sometimes use a 6 string. The tuning is E C F A# D# G# C (on a 6 string they just omit the high C), which is drop F but with the low F tuned down a semitone and the 2 highest strings tuned up a semitone each. The intervals between the strings are all the same (Perfect 4th) apart from the low E which creats a dissonant ''power chord''. Cool video!

    Since you mentioned tone and wanting to get a good sound, the best advice I’ve ever heard for metal guitar tones: Make sure have a good impulse (which is a combination of the cabinet, speaker and mic)!
    Kristian Kohle has an excellent video that demonstrates this perfectly. You can have the best amp head in the world, but it won’t matter at all if you have a crappy impulse. In fact, I’m pretty sure this Vildhjarta album was recorded with a Line 6 Pod XT. Good impulses, people!
    Edit: The video I mentioned is called “What metal guitarists don’t understand!”, on URM academy’s channel.
