Friedman guitarists have the best tone. Bill Kelliher and Jerry have my favorite tones of all time.
According to Jerry Cantrell, it’s called the Double J, not the JJ. It’s named after his ranch.
Burnt Gerbil You are exactly correct but I’m sure it’s not a big deal. The thing gets called all KINDS of different things at the studio and they’re all terms of endearment.
If he felt that way he should probably have named it the double j xD can’t imagine anyone looking at the name and saying anything but ‘jj’

@@Burnt_Gerbil Then you better correct the guys from the Friedman camp because they call it the JJ. I know because when I bought my 100 watt SS I almost bought the JJ but liked the SS a little better and they call it the JJ. I live 7 minutes form the Friedman shop and that is what they call it so feel free to correct them.

I went to buy an orange amp the other day. My local guitar center didn't have on so I tried a Friedman amp just for shits and giggles... I fell in love immediately. I'm now saving up for the bigger version of this one. They really are worth the extra cost. Especially the JJ signature.

Jerry is the man. I've been a hard core Alice in Chains fan since I was 13. First songs I learned to play were Alice In Chains songs. Im sooooooo buying this amp!!!!
This has just made me realise I've not listened to enough AIC recently...
Do you hear any less power/presence(For lack of better words) when recording a 20W head vs 100W head into a torpedo live/loadbox straight to computer? My 15w 5150iii sounds incredible into my Torpedo Live, would their be any real reason to grab the 120W for recording purposes only(I know there will be slight tonal differences). I don't need more volume since I don't play live anymore.

Every review of this amp people are playing Alice in chains and matching the tone as close as they can. Can somebody please do a review where they try and get a few different tones from this head.
I was just playing one I just got. At low volume is sounds a lot like my mini-mesa 25. At higher volumes is where it really shines. The clean channel is just one knob, volume. I would call it a bright switch, I'm guessing he's doing something with the pre-amp tubes. When you crank that up you can get some really nice old marshall tones, just nowhere near as loud, and cleans up beautifully.
On the gain channel, I set the master volume to be at close to the same db level as the clean channel cranked, which is about 4, and just used the tiniest bit of gain, not even above 3 and it has classic rock tone for days. There is a ton of gain in the gain section of this amp and it's super clear, whether at 3 or 10.
This is a really great little amp. Not cheap, but a steal compared to 50/100 watt amps.

Owned a Runt, sold it for this. JJ is more versatile, with cleaner (better clarity, IMO) distortion and louder volume. I know both are 20watt, but some paperwork states 25 watt for the JJ, and it shows.

Was all set to get an Orange th30...until I saw this. Not going to lie, like the crunch on the Orange a little more, but this amp sounds so damn good and it’s probably better build quality. Plus the cab sim...sold.
joshua johnson I had a TH30 in 2013-2014 and I can honestly say that the JJ Jr. has a much more defined, “hi-fi” sound. Plus, my TH30 spent a ton of time in the repair shop so I ended up giving up on it. The Orange sounded more “modern,” overall, great for mid-scooped modern metal. The JJ can do that too, but really does sound like a hi-def super Marshall.
