this is so sad to hear..Maradona had at most 8 years from 82-90 of dominance…and in this time besides the 86 world cup there’s not a lot more of impressive silverware..and he was playing in europe..messi since 2009 has been categorically the best footballer in the planet..pick any stretch of maradona’s career..any and compare it with a similar stretch of time of messi’s and the numbers will speak for themselves..maradona was a genius but his tenure at the top was too short and he had only himself to blame for that..this is a very dangerous opinion held by men that should look pass biases but again mediocrity everywhere..

The question to ask Keown is would he prefer to face Messi when he was 23 yrs old v. Mpabbe right now at 23 yrs old. Messi is a different player now. People so easily forget the pace he had while keeping the ball right at his feet.
He still has that pace, he just uses it sparingly now

I think he meant prime Messi, but recency bias had him think current Messi when answering. He does make a point about Mbappe's pace, if we consider that he can just throw the ball forward from midfield and he will overtake every defender, no matter who it is, even with like 5 meters of advantage. But the thing is, he cant do that if he doesn't have that space, for example if he receives it on the side of the box already or in tight spaces. That's were Messi shines, he can just dance around every space, airtight or not. And I don't know if he's forgotten, but prime Messi was by no means slow himself.

@@MrLifein66 Yeah I agree, there are tactical measures you can take against Mbappe, by covering and/or limiting the space to prevent him from getting to full speed, but "prime Messi" that was a different beast. Your best bet was always to restrict the ball from getting to him, because if the ball got to him, you just had to pray he wasn't up to it that day. Go tight, man mark, shadow mark, umbrella cover, kick and harry, they tried it all.

There is no question that Messi is the Greatest of this football era with or without the WC. We can certainly argue Maradona and Pele of their respectives. The WC would cement his angelic status in Argetina and finally get himself out of Maradona’s shadow. As to the Goat, that is a more personal decision but the quality, multi-faceted creativity and numbers Messi has put up over such a long time period in the toughest leagues and competitions in the world is mind boggling.

Brazil made a mistake that Argentina did not, they stopped pressuring opposing players when they took the lead. As soon as Brazil took their foot off the gas they were done. If you watched Argentina against Croatia they never stopped putting pressure on the ball carrier from midfield into the defensive zone, even when leading by 3 goals. Brazil had plenty of talent to win but lost because of tactics. France plays a similar game always looking to steal the ball and push the counter attack, should be a great game.
Its crazy how they you use hardcore midfield over all that area.
This mentality is why the English don't win. Yes, Mbappe's pace is frightening, but they are more worried about that one trait than playing against the greatest player of all time. English football is obsessed with measurables like pace, height, etc., to the detriment of intelligence and genius. Mbappe has never and will never go on a run of scoring 60 and 70 goals a season like Messi.

Messi's never had the electric pace Mbappe has, what he had though was insane acceleration, one drop of the shoulder and gone, that's all that matters in football, first few yards are everything. Hazard used to do it for us non-stop, reality is he wasn't fast himself. The real test of Mbappe's metal will be how he adapts when the pace goes. Owen was robbed of it by the time he was 21/22, he''d better hope the same doesn't happen to him.

Like I said, the first few yards are all that matter, once Messi dropped you that was it, you can't recover from it unless the team are set up to have a 2nd and 3rd marker. With Mbappe if there's clear space to run into he can exploit it like Bale used to do. Pace terrifies defenders. Don't like Rio, but he knows his stuff, as central defender you can't defend against that false 9 role, especially when it's someone as elusive as Messi there. You can defend pace, we showed that against France. Put it this way - cut the space on a prime Mbappe and he has no where to go. Cut the space on a prime Messi and he finds a way through however many have surrounded him.

@@KINGKING10109 there are flair players now too football is just way more systematic now with less freedom to express yourself. Also flair & tricky players are criticised a lot nowadays. For example Antony was under a lot of scrutiny not too long ago for ‘showboating’ during a match whereas back then they’d appreciate a player back then for showing skill whereas now it’s frowned upon. Especially in England.

However, if there is a TIE then the number of successful assists are also seen, in which case Messi has 3 assists with 5 goals and Mbappe has 2 assists with 5 goals .
If that too ties, then 3 additional parameters are used - "number of minutes played", "quality of goals" and "degree of difficulty " are looked at while scoring the goals as well as the "impact it had for the team".
If there is a TIE between for example Messi & Mbappe' Golden Boot should go to Mbappe' simply bcoz Mbappe played less minutes than Messi (Mbappe came as substitute for 1 match much later).
Also, 3 out of 5 Messi's goals came from penalty kicks in matches against KSA, NED, CRO),
If you analyze the goals carefully, Mbappe's (5) and Alvarez's (4) goals were of highest quality, followed by Giroud and then Messi.
Hence, it teams of quality of goals highest being first , lowest being last:
Mbappe (5)
Alvarez (4)
Giroud (4)
Messi (5)
If Messi scores more than the other 3, he will win although 3 of his 5 goals have come from penalty kicks, but in case of TIE based on goals & assists, I think it would be unfair to give Messi Golden Boot in my opinion.
The twist is if both Alvarez and Giroud score 1 goal each resulting in 4 way TIE on number of goals or either of them score 2 goals leaving both Mbappe or Messi out of the race !!

Mbappe is a great goalscorer. He will become better than Henry/Trezeguet (in fact he already is) or any goalscoarer France ever had, and he will break all records of the French national team when it comes to score goals. But that's it. He is not a playmaker so in this case he is not even at the level of Platini or Zidane who brought MUCH more than goals. So let's not compare him with Messi, he is not and will never be at his level. Messi is not only about scoring goals.
