Bismuth Is Strange...

  • Tim recently received a box of toys and gadgets from an inventor in Iowa USA called Chuck Hilliard.
    Trivial Pursuit cards are fitted together in different ways to make spinners. And then rolls of paper tickets converts into three dimensional shapes.
    3D printing has been used to make some intriguing shapes.
    Then a gadget to entertain cats, using string and elastic bands!
    Next Bismuth - Tim shows some amazing crystals of this element.
    Finally, an interesting gadget that can retain water, even when you hold it upside down - a lovely example of surface tension.

    Bismuth is a beautiful element. Those square patterns that you see are completely natural too. That's just one of the odd properties of the metal, when it cools and starts forming crystals it just builds these square designs.

    • @galadis123
      @galadis123 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It also emites a slight amount of radiation that will not harm you. It's rare that an element can do that.

    • @Ebani
      @Ebani ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galadis123 Not really, color is also a type of electromagnetic radiation, all "radiation" is.

    • @Ebani

      Those cubic patterns are actually the crystaline structure configuration of the atoms which, if grown slowly over time (thermodynamically reversible process) it's visible macroscopically. Most minerals have such repeatable lattice structures with some like diamonds having more than 1 of which can be found in nature in either forms (best one being a rhombus/diamond shape, hence the name).

    I suddenly remember a trick I read about a long time ago. You hold a coin (20-25 mm or so) vertically between the table and the tip of your left index finger. Then with the other hand you move your right index finger quickly down your left finger (you can change left/right if convenient). That sends the coin spinning on the table.
    Let the spectators try - they won't make it.
    The trick is that the tip of your right thumb just hits the edge of the coin and sends it spinning. But nobody notices.
    I wonder how I forgot that.

    Fun fact: Bismuth is the least-radioactive radioactive element. There is technically no completely stable isotope, but the _most_ stable, Bi-209, has a half-life of approximately 10 billion times the age of the universe, so its radioactivity is harmless and basically impossible to measure.

    I wouldn't have such long strings and elastic bands around cats, it doesn't take long for a cat to swallow a string or an elastic band due to their essentially automatic swallowing mechanism and it could be a disaster. I have 4 cats at the moment, had them for many years now and I've kept cats my entire life so while playing with strings is ok if you hold onto one end firmly and know the cat won't get ahold of the whole thing, wrapping strings around your ankles especially ones made of different smaller strings could end badly. This might just be me being overprotective but I felt like saying it's a bad idea :)
    Awesome awesome toys tho, loved the green one on a string, it somehow gave me frog vibes.
