I remember watching this when it aired and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. So interesting to see the pups right after being born, their size compared to their mother, and the drastic difference in color. That must be the ultimate jackpot for a biologist.
Probably was
Really is incredible
And compared to many other sting ray species, those pups are enormous.
This is one of the few Discovery Channel shows I still watch when "Reality TV" started to become popular. And this was the first river monster I saw. It gave me nightmares. I miss quality shows like this.

She wasnt in labor she thought shebwas gonna die or was stressed so she gave birth to protect her babies so they can live if she dies
It wasnt a healthy birth, and more than likely the babies didnt make it either sadly.

At first I read the title to fast and thought that Jeremy caught a stingray and then gave birth and I was like dang he really can do anything
They are edited that part out, Jeremy didn’t want the episode to take too long

Lmao literally me rn. 5am here. Been watching Jeremy wade for a good hour. Keep saying one more video
To anyone saying this was "abusive" or anything to that extent, he was asked by a group of researchers to catch one to help them study how the fish are growing in this particular region (which is obviously well), and there's no way any of them could've known the ray was about to give birth on the end of the line. They were all very lucky to witness it happen, since they were able to learn even more about these amazing creatures.
3lla agree. I’ve been watching this show a lot and one thing I’m absolutely certain that Jeremy is always respectful to the fish and releases them back into the water
Researchers better study their own kind and leave the animals alone.

He is a marine biologist. So I suppose he would want to do research on his catches
Well he's a scientist himself
Well, he's something of a scientist himself

Everyone in the comments commenting on how she's stressed like it's a big 'Haha GOTCHA' when there was absolutely no way for them to know she was pregnant in the first place. They were collecting its venom. Chill out.
@You're Sheep you too
@You're Sheep no u
@You're Sheep actually this is really helpful. Female stingray's venom give out the more information on the properties of the venom. They were never gonna kill it. Even if they did it would be of no use. Whereas the venom is used to exract and for scientist to expand their field of knowledge. Stingray venom can kill the human body system in less 3 mins if its a special bread so you never know. The information on this venom is later used to find out anti venom to help those who are bit by it. So in an indirect way they are helping.
@You're Sheep if you get stung by a stingray then don't bother finding an anti-venom
Jeremy: Haha, got you now. Now come here.
Stingray: Please sir, I'm pregnant.
Me: O_O
She was so nervous, she gave birth.

I absolutely love Jeremy and River Monsters!! This show would NOT be nearly as good without Jeremy in it!! His dry sense of humor never ceases to make me laugh and the giants that he catches never cease to make me jealous!!! What I would not give to be able to go sturgeon fishing in the Young River Bay area with him. You know that this man has some VERY serious fishing tales to tell!!
Those sting rays are going to keep hearing this story for the rest of there lives
"The hell with my sore arm".
I got one question.... What fkn brand of hooks is he using??
Custom military grade used for fishing out Godzilla
Forget the hook. WHAT KIND OF LINE?
Mr Memes 500 pound wire
@@slightlycookedbread The kind designed to catch sea fish.
@Mason Ward Ah, that makes sense, Japan has a very prevalent maritime fishing culture.

Stingray looks at Steve Irwin in confusion
@@superknightlol That's not true
@@superknightlol It doesn't happen instantly, first you get hit with the tail then you get wounded which means the poison enters your blood stream then you feel sick and stuff, but again you don't die instantly you can still get help at a hospital or treat it yourself a stingray sting isn't that fatal most of the time, it's commonly just like a cut that is easily treatable.
Until it stings your heart
Tra the stingray pulls the irwin move
I remember back in the days I used to draw every single fish that Jeremy caught onto my notebook, I would binge watch the hell out of them, missed this one the most. Would say I did a pretty good job, sadly the notebook was thrown out by accident

Sore arm? Dude you literally ripped a tendon off your bicep…and you advanced marine science by like 50 years over the course of 1 episode.
"To hell with my sore arm" isn't this the same episode he obliterated his arm and now has a hole in his bicep?
No that fish got away and I think was a lot bigger than this one as it broke the rod.
One of the best episodes of one of the best shows.
AMAZING, thank you for showing!
Jeremy's contributions to scientific research are often very overlooked.
How/who does scientific research help when invariably it seems that humans are the cause of most problems?!
@@georgealderson4424 well the scientific research looks on the behaviour and personalities, food, natural habitat of these animals. And sure humans are main cause but if we knows how a certain animal reacts, eats and lives, we can make a suitable environment for those animals where they can be safe with more than enough food to live and we can aware many people about these animals which will help them to understand it better and not harm them and many more and in case of dangerous animals, we can save ourself from being targeted or attacked by those animal without hurting them.
@@angrymaniac53 I hope scientists are successful in that case AM
Still one of my favorite episodes but it’s crazy to think those kinda things are living in the wild as we speak 😱😁
Steve would be proud
RIP Mr. Irwin :(
the little babies were so cute haha
Not SO little, but very very cute
Yeah I remember I saw this year's ago and when I saw the babies I was like awww
I love rays! Absolutely gorgeous! And they feel like silk almost! I got to pet one at an aquarium :)
Man these animals are ready to survive right from birth unlike humans that need to be raised for a entire 16 years!!! Before they can fend for themselves and ahh they’re so cute on top of their mum😊👍🏻
Humans aren't born fully developed like a lot of fish and reptiles.
16 years is generous
Honestly, humans really only need 4-6 years to not be stupid and be independant, but it still is a long time compared to other animals
Humans brains are still developing until they’re about 20 I believe

Such a beautiful mother. Just magnificent.
Stingray: and that’s how me and your god father met!
We all know that if the stingray wasn’t in labor she would have won the battle like the first one Wade hooked earlier in the episode that broke his Carbon Fiber fishing rod.

Dude caught 4 fish with one cast. 🐐🐐
Did anyone else see the pups and go “awhhhhh” or was that just me 🥺
I remember when my family went fishing and after a few hours, my uncle caught a stingray. The stingray kept moving around, almost hitting my cousin with its stinger. My dad and uncle finally got it under a net and looked closer at it realizing that it's big for its size. They felt around its stomach and felt movements, so my uncle really wanted to see the babies. I didn't know at the time that he might have killed a family of stingrays. They were so pink, small, and squirming around. I forgot what happens between that time but I think he tried to set them free. Not sure if he threw them in.
A very big catch, want to see like that in person

i hope she wasn't already giving birth wile he was catching her
i have no idea if the young stay with the mother or not
For rays as well as sharks I believe, once the pups are born, they're on their own. The mother doesn't stay around. They're born with all the natural instincts they need to survive.
Luke you are correct the young separate from their mother and siblings shortly after birth
Sting ray gives birth to baby under stress and most of the time those baby that are born are not fully developed. So you can be sure that the sting ray wasn't giving birth
thats amazing
I thought it would be clickbait but the video made me happy
imagine swimming over or stepping on that thing at the beech 🤐
when it's time to QA part 3?
Wow!! Way to go Jeremy!!

Anyone who fought a ray before knows that the two big guys sitting in front of Jeremy did most of the pulling.
so does the stingray protect her young or they go on their separate ways?
