    The air cleaner is indeed an oil bath type. Nice score! I used to live in Garland, now in Grayson Co., TX. Be patient and keep after it. You will get it going!

    That old flathead six will run forever. They were almost bulletproof. Wish I had the time left to find and enjoy one of those old classics.

    My Great Uncle had a Plymouth Special Deluxe. I'm 64 this car brought back memories, we would walk to his house to visit and he always brought us home to a 5 year old that back seat seemed massive. He lived to just short of his 100th Birthday. Unfortunately he decided to quit driving at about 95 and gave the car to his son, a grandson took it and wrecked it my brother and I looked at fixing it but he just jacked it up too much to fix.

    My dad had a black 55 Plymouth with factory red trim before that a 48 Plymouth great cars. I’d polish that car get that black paint of those chrome fins get the car all back on 12 volts correctly find a original good diff . Fix the roof lining change all the fluids an new tune up gear an you on a runner . Get a hose down the freeze plug hole an wash it out. 👍🏻💯Brian in Tasmania love the car .

    The metal chunks in the cooling system might be what is left of the" water distribution tube" that runs from front to back with holes that spray the valve seat areas from inside the block..I might be a little late, but I'm viewing some of your projects for the first time since I subscribed yesterday. Thnx for the memories! I never drove an old Plymouth that I couldn't fix.

    I don't know what it is about the 50 super deluxe Chrysler / Plymouth plus or minus a year and I've always liked them. All I ever see is four doors and I think that body style looks good in a four door. You know if somebody want to get into the hobby that's the car you can start with because they're really super cheap. Compare them to their Ford or Chevy counterparts and they're a lot cheaper here take a look at the 1950 88 Oldsmobile I think 49 through 50 she were the same. Take a look at the back end of that car and see the resemblance of the tail light design to your car. I just found it interesting that this tail lights looks so much alike. One of these days I might get a car like that. I know I just got more to keep busy with. But I like what they've done to the interior red interior with the black exterior they go well together. Thanks for making the video

    Just my experience with old stuff, if it got any gas newer than 98, the fuel system is usually toast. An 88 blazer that got parked 6 years ago had the tank rotted out, but my 76 chevy that got parked in 94 survived just fine. Always shocked me when a newer rig sits and its worse than the older ones.

    My first car I bought in 1964 was a 1950 Plymouth Special Deluxe. Looked a lot like your 49. But it was really in perfect condition back in those days. Railroader owned it so only drove it when he was home. The hood was sun faded from setting backed into the garage most of the time facing the sun was the only thing. He had put on seat covers and when removed the upholstery was perfect. Cannot imagine wasting time to change to 12 volt and screw up the lights and gauges as well as the tube type radio, mine worked. Somebody put disc brakes on the rear!!! Crazy! Always gets to me now days when someone will try and start an old car and never really attempt to clean it up and make sure things are operational. Clean the carb after you tried to run it before is just one of many. did not even say you checked it had oil or coolant. Interesting anyway.

    • @somewhatfast
      @somewhatfast  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank galen, it runs great now. And the cost to convert it to 12volts was cheaper than a rebuild generator and a 6 volt battery. Those 6 volt parts are getting hard to find. If it ever broke down on the side of the road i can just go to any auto parts store and grab a battery or gm alternator.

    So back in the 80s I worked on an Island between Africa and S. America During WWII the US built an airfield there, so out on the beach they had 4 pumps to flow POL from frieghter off shore to some tanks. The motors where the 215 CI industrial flathead 6 got one of them running been out there since 44 or so yea you cant kill-em that island also had some fab junkyards got several old dodges (M37 W200 crewcabs running drove em around) I subbed ever listen to the 'Cramps"?

  • @moosehand8721
    @moosehand8721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If your gauges don't work after all then switch it to negative ground, he may have converted it to 12 volt negative ground and your starter will turn same direction either polarity don't ask me how but that's the way they are.

      Wow I didnt know that

    • @jamesmann1243
      @jamesmann1243 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@somewhatfast yeah, to make those gauges work on Chrysler's 12 volt system, when they went 12 volt in 1956, they installed a voltage limiter in series with the gauges, unless of course, the oil, and water temp, was still mechanical, which yours is on that 49 Plymouth, so reverse the leads on fuel sending unit, and the amp gauge, wire up the voltage limiter, positive to positive post on limiter, negative to gauge positive, negative on gauge post to chassis negative. now the way these work, is hook up a test light, clip to ground, turn key on, touch probe to negative post on limiter, and the test light should blink on/ off about every second or two. That cuts voltage from 12 to 6 volt. No muss no fuss. And no resistors to try and guess at as how to get correct voltage drop. Any NAPA should be able to get you one for a mid 60s chrysler product rather easily. Good luck.
