Will It Run? Police Bug Sitting Abandoned For 35 Years

- my 1st time ever buying at an auction is this 1968 vw bug turned into a police car in the early 80s, it was used for a few years then went into disrepair, got pushed into the back parking lot then forgotten for decades. a youtuber sent me a link to the auction and l won for the sum of $1250, lets see what we got and if it can be revived.
@6:42 - The card - That is a Petrovend key card for an unattended fueling site. I used to install and maintain those systems. They use these punch cards for the older readers and several varieties of magnetic media after that. Most systems also allowed manual key entry. Usually a driver number, mileage and a pin. Even key cards had manual entry prompts for mileage and such per the customers requirements (like police fleet vehicles)
I bet the “regulars” you know from the VW shows never know what you’ll show up with next time! 😁

Capital letters are more easily distinguished than lower-case.

At 54:45 when he turns the engine over, the memories flowed and flooded my brain. My first car was a 71 vw Van my father bought me. My second car was a 73 camper van VW I purchased with my GF at the time and eventually 1st wife, after coming home from the navy. It was pristine and fully loaded. I curse the day we sold that van. I really mean it when I say I experience about 15 minutes of depression when I think about selling that. The condition of that van if it was just preserved from 93 when I sold it to now would make that van fetch 50k easy. It had the tent and the cot that went in the pop up . It had an automatically transmission also
Sliech Auto Body is still in existence. I bet they’d get a kick out of seeing the bug 😊
I really enjoyed this one!! Why do I love watching? Sure, I like the mechanic aspects, but I really love watching how much fun Mustie has bringing this stuff back to life! You can tell his passion for what he does is deep!!

I really enjoyed this video! Guy's got the right amount of skill and patience to bring this abandoned bucket back to life. Really appreciate the way he shows us every last detail. Obviously a VW pro. When he showed the trophy sitting on the trailer, I was completely stupefied given the line of dozens of nicely restored beetles. Worst in show was a bit harsh, but definitely "special interest." Great video!

Was watching when you were testing the first spark plug, when you were turning over the engine to see if you had spark with the new plug 36:27, under your hand near the fender there was an ark. Just so your aware. I know your going to find it later, but in the case you didnt take notice. There might be a short. Love the videos

Now that is ironic! Seeing Sliech Auto Body from Agawam on that car brings back a flood of memories. Before I retired in May of 2015 Sliech Auto Body in Agawam Ma was a business associate of mine. Additionally I began working on the Beetle at a VW dealership starting the day after graduating from high school. My profession back then was collision repair. The Beetle was the easiest car to repair back then.
6:42 That punched card was a early version of a private gas card. You literally slid it into a card slot on the gas pump and filled up your vehicle (24/7 access). you would get a monthly bill for the gas purchases.

Cool trophy!!!! I remember those GE sirens from back in my two way radios days. The control head matched matched up with the MASTR Pro and MASTR Executive lines of radios. General Electric stuff was way better than Motorola. Easier to service, and needed service less often.
I love everything about that Bug! Good job on getting it running and on sorting out all the toys on it!

That engine runs so damn nice! Would love to see an engine and transaxle that nice end up with Cars and Cameras be fun to see the kart they build around it.
Not sure it should be this specific powertrain though. Rusty as it is the police bug is too unique to scrap.

My dad used to play with those GE sirens and you used to be able to put them in between 2 positions and it would make its "own" sirens

Ready for that Friday night figure 8 demolition derby pace car job. And hey a trophy is a symbol of participation. You won by showing up. I worry the oil cooler in the fan shroud is plugged with mouse nest. Mice have ruined more than one air cooled engine by plugging passages up. I grew up in Granby Ct. just around the corner from Agawam. We did go to the Friday night demolition derbies back in the 60's. Saddest thing I ever saw was them wreck a mint(?) Edsel ambulance by repeatedly smashing it flat with 2 country squire wagons from both sides. Ah the memories.
I see the truck is back from the loan museum. When the lights and siren went off i laughed my ass off with Darren.

At one time here in Champaign-Urbana IL, there was a company that had a VW limo [basically a stretched beetle]. You could actually hire it out! They sold it to a private entity; unknown if it's even still in the area.
I would love to see more videos on this car its truly one of a kind

That's a real good starter you can just forget the engine and drive around on the starter you can have the first E bug in town
Haven't read all the comments yet so someone else might have mentioned it but the punch card you pulled out of the glove box is a fuel card. There are still some old school fleet fuel points that use those damn things to this very day!

🙄 Come now, anyone that has ever worked on a Vdub knows that only 4 bolts hold the front seat in. Then your 'Bear' can be easily removed.
Even 356B Porsche seats bolt right in! As do many other parts.

With all the critter nest that were in that bug I’d pull the engine and the fan housing to insure no crud was blocking the airflow to the cylinders.

I you speed up the hood action just a wee bit and practiced your timing with the P.A. system you could put in a quick Beetlejuice style "Hi How are ya!" just after you shut the siren down. Excellent job!
