    Don't get confused with Nihilism... which means, EVERYTHING is so utterly meaningless that making your own meaning is completely meaningless which in turn makes life completely pointless (which is where the quote 'Should I kill myself or have a cup of coffee' came from....it doesn't matter because its all pointless)...
    Existentialism is -- making your own meaning.. which is a meaning in itself and in turn NOT pointless. This is exciting and liberating and freeing to know.....that it is in your hands and you can have any purpose or meaning you want.
    Absurdism means -- We can't really know either way, but we have to make the choice to make a meaning anyway....

      Carah Amelie What about existential nihilism ?

    • @woodsofchaos
      @woodsofchaos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      3 things-
      1) Absurdism doesn't mean that at all. The absurdist view is that the universe is inherently lacking in the possibility of meaning, and yet (as Camus suggests) we must never stop our search for it, despite being conscious of the fact that this search is bound to fail.
      2) I wouldn't say that the existential realization is supposed to be "exciting". That creates a very bad picture of what existentialism is about. Almost all of the existentialists were against the idle hedonistic tendency of people, and explicitly advocated the necessity of embracing despair, angst, anxiety and ambiguity instead of fleeing away from them.
      3) 'Should I have a cup...' is a quote by camus (founder of absurdism) and so was really not meant in the existential nihilistic sense, though you could stay it stemmed from that perspective.

    Be careful not to confuse existentialism with nihilism. Existentialism frees us to choose and *make* meaning, whereas nihilism is more the 'meaningless speck of dust' idea. According to existentialists, it doesn't matter what we choose, but we must choose. Absurdity doesn't always equal meaninglessness (at least in my interpretation).

    6:40 dont let choice make you anxious ??.. existentialism urges to embrace the anxiety ..why do you think anxiety as a bad feeling ..and it asserts that anxiety must be a necessary component of an existentialist's life

    I feel like this talk would be very confusing to people who do not know anything about existentialism. He is using misinterpreting many of the words when he is trying to give a quick explanation of existentialism. It is too in depth to do in this length of time. I couldn't watch more than a few minutes because of this. I appreciate what you are trying to do, though. I think many people would be positively impacted by existentialism in their everyday life. Refine your talk and keep educating people!

    Once you are comfortable with existential nihilism. You find real peace. Even Hinduism leads you towards it. As we say in Hindi 'YEH SAB MAYA HAI' at whatever we see, feel or observe.

    1- Existentialism is NOT "a philosophy". It is A branch of philosophy. 2- Existentialism is not a self-help guide as it is implied. It simply states a few facts which are worth keeping in mind.

    This is easily the worst Ted Talk I've seen. He does nothing to address the topic, and confuses existentialism with nihilism then lets this traumatize him rather than uplift him. Stephen Morse really needs to research this movement before he gives another speech on it.

    Y’all are flexing your egos based on your understanding of these constructs and education; and dismissing the interpretations of another soul.
    But hey, it sounds like that makes you value your existence more. So is this your form of riding the bike in the mirror?
