I just got enlightment recently bout "pressing" in FM. Pressing exists in :1. Roles, some roles dictated pressing to the play style as in; pressing forward, defensive winger, Ball winning midfielder, and stopper, 2. By team instructions and mentality, and 3. "The character" of a player. Marked by the hi aggression attribute. So you could have a CM that act like a BWM just because he has hi aggression.
After all this time you still manage to teach us something new 😂 I always loved the 'not so usual' kind of rolls but i never really got them in the right position to make it work. Now i play for a while in a 442 Inside back, lib, no nonsens, wingback Wm, volante (att) bwm (sup) Dw (sup) Poacher and a Pf (sup) Higher def line High pressure and more direct passing. In the case of luton and Union Berlin it works good, not great but good enough to challenge for the cup and European places. Keep up the great work

Its a solid formation, i tried it with a AF and there wasn't much of a difference. That saying...i never win with big numbers, most of the time with 1-0, 2-0..in away games a lot of draws. But that keeps it excited, sometimes i qualify for a European Cup and sometimes i end up round 10th place but thats good, then i can still grow...with the big clubs i always got bored after 2 or 3 seasons 😅.
Agreed. People don't like to play defensive terroristball they want to play high pressing gegenpress. A simple change of name to pressing winger would increase the usage of the role.
Can you make a video about scouting, recruitment focus and player research in general? A recurring theme in this FM has been how bad the recruitment focuses are and I, at least, have a hard time in the field of transfers and scouting. Keep up the great work, it's the best FM content I've seen.

Another couple of unsung heroes! My tactic would be a very asymmetrical 41212. The team instructions would be: attacking mentality, counter press, much more often pressing. Left to right IFB, L(SU), CD(CO), FB(SU), Regista (offset right, in front of the CDCO), DW(SU),BWM(SU, in the central midfield position, offset left), Trequartista (as AM right winger), PF (A), Poacher. With a Sweeper Keeper on support, it would make only one player on defense duty. The only player instructions would be the trequartista marking tight the opponent's left defender if vs a back 4, or the opponent's left wing back vs a back 3. If the team doesn't have enough talent for those roles, I would switch the trequartista with an inverted winger on attack and the regista with another BWM(su). Using two BWM (su) - one at CM position and another at DM position - is a very good and unusual midfield. This second version would follow my philosophy of "0 or 2+ playmakers", that I know you love 🤣. I would be extremely heavy with opposition instructions with both versions and I hope that will be the topic of your next video 😉
Love the thought process behind the roles and your formation!! and I've been working for some stuff on opposition instructions funny enough. Nothing super imminent. It's because I've been really happy with this 4231 formation and I want to keep this going forward, so start using more opposition instructions to shut them down (rather than altering the formation to adjust)
They'd finish mid-table in goals scored, top-3 in goals conceded, and #1 in fouls commited. the ole philosophy of "they may win but they won't make it out alive" haha

i have used the excact same tactic and formation multipule times with 3 main differances than yours! First of all out of possesion i used higher def line with much lower line of engagment plus trap outside and press more often . Secondly in possesion i used more direct passing and because of this my ball winning mid is on defend because the description of a bwm on support says that is used in formations that press high and try to keep possesion wich is the opposite of what i am trying to do ! Finally i switched many times the role of the wide playmaker and the poacher , if the player has the trait shots from distance and then if he has good dribling i go for inverted winger if not for wide mid and for the striker if the striker has the trait runs with the ball i dont use a poacher ! I noticed that if i use a pressing forward on attack duty and my line of eng is low because he lives his position to track back i cannot excecute a counter attack ! the striker pairing is the most difficult also because the pressing forward on support has the instruction holds up ball and you mention in a previous video that this instruction near to a poacher doesnt work well which is something i noticed as well ! I managed to make good seasons though in three years with valencia i won a cup reached semi finals in europe and finish top4 regurarly also i won a europa league with villareal in another save and a conferance league with fiorentina ! No matter what team i choose i always try to play this way so i adjust my transfers according to this !

In my mind i always thought of a pressing forward being ideal for a high line and a defensive winger and BWM being good in a mid block due to where your pressing players are relative to pitch position. I suspect im wrong in that assumption though? What are good positons for a high block and whats better for a mid block?
The Defensive Winger likes to press the full backs (I think the role description actually refers to something like this funny enough). So I think if I had to choose one, I'd use a high press for the PF, DW, and BWM. But use the BWM on support since they like to win the ball higher up too. Put a playmaker with them and I think you'd have a really good tactic going
love these combos, superhelpful in journeyman saves. I was wondering if when you do your whole match watch to tinker with a tactic you notice the ai adjusting its zonal marking and player marking between inswinget and outswinger corners? i was trying to find a corner tactic using an edge of area routine and noticed the ai kept switching its zonal focus depending on when i used inswingers and outswingers.
you know, I actually haven't noticed that... but that's an amazing catch!! thank you for pointing that out. I'm going to check for that once I get into set pieces some more
Great video. I love the idea of the traps. In my current new save I'll be forced to go defensive so this will be useful. Though since I watched this it's been wrecking my head thinking how can I make this work on both sides and I'm not sure it's possible. It would require 6 players then you need a midfielder to hold position in the middle, a striker to stay up top, no way you can have full backs due to the number therefore the DW will possibly get caught out...am I driving myself mad when there is no solution?
yea it's tough no doubt. I'm not sure there'd be a way to get all 6.. unless your goal was to bludgeon the opponent for 90 minutes (which in truth could be pretty fun haha) Swapping one of the PF for an attacking midfielder role could be a start
i`m rocking 3 BPD(d), 1 DM as DLP(sup), 2 CM as BWM(sup), 2 DW(sup), 2 PF(att) - attacking mentality couse player roles are defensive oriented & BWM and DW with player instruction to get further forward, take more risk and shot more often

I'd probably do the Mez on attack, but other than that it looks good!! Or the Inside Forward on attack if that's more your preference. Just something to get one more attacking role in the setup. But great work!!
I double checked and all the full back roles should be in the defender playlists (I hope). If you're looking specifically for the full back (on the defend duty), it should be in the normal Full Back player role video

Something I’ve been doing with decent success (in majority part thanks to your videos!!) is playing a 4-4-2 or variation that has two pressing forwards, two defensive wingers, at least one ball winning midfielder, and then a defensive rest defence with four at the back and an anchor at all times, with the goal to press high, stay compact, get counter attacks from transitions, but to also keep a solid defensive base. Kind of like a 5-5 balance of risk that I can adjust based on how the game is going. There are no attack duties though, five on defend and five on support (unless we’re losing, then I’d switch the FBs to attacking CWBs). I wanted to thank you for your advice on everything you’ve done video wise so far, but I also wanted to ask - is this overkill? There’s a part of me that feels the fluidity of the aggressive players is a bit risky in itself, especially given the amount of them. That said, we are doing well, but that’s with a relatively strong team anyway. RE the results, I started doing this in my long term Coventry save, when my team were underperforming in the PRM and looking like about 6th-8th halfway through the season. With my changes, plus just two team and no player instructions, they almost finished 3rd. Not bad!

What I would pay attention to is kinda what I alluded to in the video. A 442 has the propensity to get pushed back. That's the idea of a counter attack and why a 442 is so good at counters, but your team has a greater risk of being trapped in your own end. The Pressing Forwards will drop into the midfield really no matter their duty, and what I would watch for is getting outlets up top. I love the two PF, but maybe switchting a flank role to a Winger (A) could get your counter started a bit easier. A Wide Playmaker could work for this as well. Basically a role who's job it is to relieve pressure, even if momentarily. Keep me updated on how it's going!!

absolutely!! Attributes can really contribute to what kind of player you want, especillay with the more "generic" player roles

They should change the name from Defensive to Pressing Winger. I believe the same was done to the Defensive/Pressing Forward.

Yea, the Defensive Winger is usually what want people want out of their winger (close down more, tackle harder in particular)

remember if you have low aggression and teamwork, your players wont perform well as pressing forward and defensive winger
